RESUMO

Cattle were fed forage containing fluoride at a yearly average of 40 mg of fluoride/kg of forage for 5 or 6 years from the time they were 4 months of age. A significant (P < 0.05) negative correlation was observed between the average microhardness of the 3rd premolar and 3rd molar enamel and the fluorosis score of the 2nd incisor. The microhardness of fluorotic outer molar enamel was only 41% of the microhardness values of enamel from control teeth not exposed to long-term fluoride, and electron probe microanalysis indicated increased fluoride concentrations in the molar coronal cementum, enamel, and dentin. Increased incisor fluorosis scores were diagnostic of softer molar enamel. When severe, such changes may have a detrimental effect on the proper mastication and subsequent nutrition of cattle with fluorosis.

RESUMO

Cadmium injections during molar tooth development in the rat were strongly caries-promoting in female rats. Cadmium also partially negated the cariostatic effect of fluoridated drinking water in both male and female rats. The mechanism for the caries-promoting properties of cadmium is unknown, but may be related to cadmium uptake into enamel and dentin. Cadmium was taken up into molar enamel and dentin in proportion to the amount of cadmium administered, but cadmium did not influence uptake of fluoride onto eruted enamel. Calcium and ash concentrations in molar enamel were not altered by cadmium administration.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of dietary selenium present during tooth development on dental caries. Ten-day pregnant rats received either distilled drinking water or water containing 0.8 ppm or 2.4 ppm selenium, as sodium selenite or selenomethionine, until the pups were weaned. Buccal caries were measured in the pups after being fed a MIT--200 diet for 7 wk. Moderate levels (0.8 ppm) of developmental selenium significantly reduced caries in male rats when compared to control rats or to rats receiving high levels of selenium (2.4 ppm). The results indicated that moderate doses of selenium were cariostatic.

RESUMO

Uptake of cadmium into molar enamel and dentin from rats receiving cadmium in their drinking water was markedly elevated and proportional to the amount of cadmium in the drinking water. Post-developmental cadmium did not influence caries development or alter the cariostatic effectiveness of fluoridated drinking water. The data indicate that the absolute concentration of cadmium in teeth is not predictive or cadmium-induced caries and that the critical period for caries promotion by cadmium may be during the developmental rather than the post-developmental period of tooth formation.
