The activity of lymphocyte adenosine deaminase was studied in 28 undialysed uremic patients, 19 patients on maintenance hemodialysis and 32 normal subjects. A statistically significant decrease of the enzyme activity was found both for the undialysed and dialysed patients.

The activity of serum and erythrocyte glutathione reductase was studied in 66 undialysed uremic patients, 19 patients under treatment by chronic hemodialysis and 38 normal subjects. A statistically significant increase of the enzyme activity was found both in serum and erythrocytes in the uremic patients. This increase was in positive correlation with blood urea and creatinine. No difference has been observed in the enzyme activity before and after hemodialysis. By electrophoresis of the hemolysate in cellulose-acetate the pattern of the isoenzymes of the uremic patients was similar to that of the controls.

In the fifty-year period, from 1925 to 1974, 6596 autopsies were performed at three departments of Pathology in Athens. The incidence of gallstones was 5.97% in the total material. The incidence in females was 8.86% and in males 4.52%, with a ratio 2:1. An increase of the incidence has been noticed since 1925. Under the presented data Greece could be included among the countries with an intermediate frequency of gallstones, but with a tendency to follow the Western countries pattern. The significance of the Greek standard of living and the dietary surveys on the gallstone formation, are briefly discussed.
