RESUMO

Coupling Bose-Einstein condensates to optical cavities has enabled the study of many-body states with long-range interactions. However, equivalent experiments with ultracold Fermi gases have remained largely unexplored. Here, we report an experimental realization of a superradiant quantum phase transition of a degenerate Fermi gas in a transversely pumped optical cavity. The self-ordering checkerboard density pattern of Fermi gases and superradiant transitions of the cavity field spontaneously emerge by increasing the pumping intensity above a threshold value. The effects of Fermi statistics are manifested by an inverse square root scaling of the threshold with atom number and the slow dynamics of low­atomic momentum states. Our work provides an ideal platform for studying nonequilibirium dynamics of many-body states for long-range interacting Fermi gases.

BAX is an important proapoptotic protein of the BCL-2 family, and its stability is essential for the regulation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. A previous study revealed that BAX could undergo degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. In this study, we identified two lysine sites, K21 and K123, that were critical ubiquitin-binding sites in BAX. Mutation of these two sites prolonged the half-life of BAX and also affected its proapoptotic ability. Intriguingly, we found that ABT-737, a BCL-2 inhibitor, significantly enhanced TRAIL-induced BAX degradation in HCT116 cells and increased TRAIL-induced apoptosis in the HCT116 only with the BAX K21R/K123R mutant, not other BAX mutants. In addition, overexpression of PARKIN, an E3 ubiquitin ligase targeting BAX, dramatically decreased BAX protein level when only treated with ABT-737 in HCT116 cells. Therefore, we speculated that BAX activation is essential for its ubiquitin-dependent degradation.

To investigate the hydrochemical variation of karstic groundwaters in a vertically zoned climate region affected by human activity, Shuifang Spring and Bitan Spring in the Jinfo Mountain area of Chongqing were selected as a study site. Based on the differences between the natural state and intensity of human activity of these two springs, their hydrogeochemical characteristics and the controlling factors on karstic groundwaters were analyzed by means of independent sample t tests, the Gibbs graphic method, principle component analysis (PCA), and geochemical susceptivity analysis. The results show that differences in karst development in the vertical climatic zone leads to higher total ion concentrations in Bitan Spring than in Shuifang Spring. The hydrochemical types of Shuifang Spring and Bitan Spring are HCO3-Ca and HCO3-Ca·Mg, respectively, which reflect the lithology of their different elevations. Carbonate rock dissolution is the main source of Ca2+, Mg2+, and HCO3- in karstic groundwaters. Hotel sewage discharge supplies SO42-, NO3-, PO43-, K+, and Na+ in Shuifang Spring, which peaked in winter and summer, while hydrochemical parameters of Bitan Spring changed smoothly throughout the year. The water quality of Bitan Spring is better than Shuifang Spring (Shuifang Spring water is classified as Class Ⅳ). PCA shows that the water-rock interaction was the first controlling factor. Hotel sewage discharge and ions from precipitation had important effects on Shuifang Spring and Bitan Spring, respectively. In addition, the effects of soil erosion and leaching caused by precipitation also impact on the water quality of two springs to some extent. The geochemical susceptibility of Shuifang Spring was greater than that of Bitan Spring; therefore, corresponding measures should be formulated according to the characteristics of these differently elevated karst systems when exploiting groundwater resources. This is especially the case for the treatment of hotel sewage.

RESUMO

Optimal performance of thermal machines is reached by suppressing friction. Friction in quantum thermodynamics results from fast driving schemes that generate nonadiabatic excitations. The far-from-equilibrium dynamics of quantum devices can be tailored by shortcuts to adiabaticity to suppress quantum friction. We experimentally demonstrate friction-free superadiabatic strokes with a trapped unitary Fermi gas as a working substance and establish the equivalence between the superadiabatic work and its adiabatic value.

We report an observation of a dynamical super Efimovian expansion in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by engineering time dependent external harmonic trap frequencies. When the trap frequency is tailored as [1/4t^{2}+1/t^{2}λlog^{2}(t/t_{*})]^{1/2}, where t_{*} and λ are two controllable parameters, and the change is faster than a critical value, the expansion of such a quantum gas shows novel dynamics that share the same characteristics as the super Efimov effect. A clear double-log periodicity with discrete geometric scaling emerges for the cloud size in the expansion. The universality of such scaling dynamics is verified both in the noninteracting and in the unitarity limit of Fermi gas. Moreover, the measured energy scaling reveals that the potential and internal energy also show double-log periodicity with a π/2 phase difference, but the total energy is monotonically decreased. Observing super Efimovian evolution represents a paradigm in probing universal properties and allows us in a new way to study many-body nonequilibrium dynamics with experiments.

Scale invariance plays an important role in unitary Fermi gases. Discrete scaling symmetry manifests itself in quantum few-body systems such as the Efimov effect. Here, we report on the theoretical prediction and experimental observation of a distinct type of expansion dynamics for scale-invariant quantum gases. When the frequency of the harmonic trap holding the gas decreases continuously as the inverse of time t, the expansion of the cloud size exhibits a sequence of plateaus. The locations of these plateaus obey a discrete geometric scaling law with a controllable scale factor, and the expansion dynamics is governed by a log-periodic function. This marked expansion shares the same scaling law and mathematical description as the Efimov effect.
