RESUMO

The as-produced isomer mixture of the organic photovoltaic device acceptor material bis-[60]PCBM has been purified into its constituents by peak-recycling HPLC, and those individual isomers were characterised by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. A total of 18 isomers were purified from the mixture to a standard exceeding 99.5% with respect to other isomers. The HOMOs, LUMOs, and HOMO-LUMO gaps of the purified isomers vary from -5.673 to -5.444 eV, -3.901 to -3.729 eV, and 1.664 to 1.883 eV, respectively. We also find a correlation between HPLC retention time and the relative positions of the addends; in that generally the closer the addends are to each other the longer the retention time of the isomer, and vice versa.

RESUMO

The aim of present work is to study the antibacterial activity of polyphenols isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble of methanol extract of stem bark of Garcinia indica against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli by paper disc method. The results showed good antibacterial activity against S. aureus at higher concentrations, moderate at lower concentrations, against S. typhi moderate at higher concentrations but no activity against E. coli even at higher concentration for flavononylflavone. With proauthocyanin S. Aureus, S. Typhi and E. coli showed good antibacterial activity at higher concentration only.

We have investigated the growth of molecular clusters in confined geometries defined by a bimolecular supramolecular network. This framework provides a regular array of identical nanoscale traps in which further deposited molecules nucleate cluster growth. For the higher fullerene, C84, molecules aggregate into close packed assemblies with an orientation which switches when the cluster size increases by one molecule. This change is controlled by the interactions between the molecules and the confining boundaries of the network pore. We show that, following nucleation of small clusters, further growth requires a reconfiguration of previously captured molecules resulting in a transition between nanoscale phases with different ordering.

RESUMO

Most experts agree that it is too early to say how quantum computers will eventually be built, and several nanoscale solid-state schemes are being implemented in a range of materials. Nanofabricated quantum dots can be made in designer configurations, with established technology for controlling interactions and for reading out results. Epitaxial quantum dots can be grown in vertical arrays in semiconductors, and ultrafast optical techniques are available for controlling and measuring their excitations. Single-walled carbon nanotubes can be used for molecular self-assembly of endohedral fullerenes, which can embody quantum information in the electron spin. The challenges of individual addressing in such tiny structures could rapidly become intractable with increasing numbers of qubits, but these schemes are amenable to global addressing methods for computation.

RESUMO

The assumption that epipolar lines are parallel to image scan lines is made in many algorithms for stereo analysis. If valid, it enables the search for corresponding image features to be confined to one dimension and, hence, simplified. An algorithm that generates a vertically aligned stereo pair by warped resampling is described. The method uses grey scale image matching between the components of the stereo pair but confined to feature points.

Ventricular unloading with dynamic blood pumps can be markedly affected by the geometry of the cannula tip within the ventricular chamber. Due to the ability of these pumps to develop significant negative inflow pressure, existing cannula tips designed for passively filling blood pumps can be predisposed to inflow occlusion by intraventricular anatomic structures. A novel "trumpet" mouth cannula was constructed to overcome this limiting problem. This design was based on two criteria: to provide additional stenting to the ventricular apex, and to assure placement of the tip opening relative to the endocardial surface. This prototype cannula was evaluated in vivo against conventional caged, blunt, and tapered designs to assess anatomic and hemodynamic interaction within the ventricular apex. Post mortem examination revealed the inflow tract to be devoid of myocardial obstruction in all cases. These initial studies indicate that a trumpet mouth cannula can provide satisfactory hemodynamic performance required by dynamic blood pumps.

High shear rates and extended residence times causing hemolysis and platelet activation can develop in an assist pump or cannula when inferior flow conditions exist. The high volume output of a miniature axial flow pump presents challenges in avoiding these adverse conditions. To assess the hemodynamics within the continuous flow Nimbus Axi-Pump, vector flow fields inside a translucent inflow cannula and a modified 12 mm AxiPump were mapped. Fluorescent image tracking velocimetry was used to track the motion of neutrally buoyant fluorescent particles (30 microns) using pulsed laser light, high resolution video cameras, and computer image analysis. An acrylic pump housing and cannula were integrated into a mock circulatory loop filled with a Newtonian, optically clear blood analog fluid. The flow parameters were controlled to yield known, physiologic loading conditions, including varying degrees of pulsatility. Cannula flow visualization results exhibited critical recirculation patterns at the bend. These results will be used to further optimize the design of the inflow. Particle impact was seen at the pump inlet in the inducer region of the rotor. Very good attachment of flow from the rotor to stator was observed when the pump operated at normal operating speeds. Intermittent regurgitant flow fields were evident in the presence of increased pulsatility and low pump speed. These results have lead to improvements in impeller design and speed control criteria to avoid potential deleterious flows.
