RESUMO

Twenty-five femoral bones were investigated in Latvian residents beginning from the neolith up to the present time by means of destructive (uniaxial strain) and nondestructive (ultrasonic effect) methods, as well as mciroscopically. The residents of Latvian SSR in the bronze age had a more highly developed osseous-articular apparatus as compared to the neolith and Middle ages. The ultrasonic method can be applied successfully by archeologists and paleopathologists in order to determine quickly physical state of bones discovered without destroying their structure.

RESUMO

Altogether 4492 skeletons of the people who inhabited the Baltic region during various epochs--from the end of the mesolithic period up to the XVIII century A. D. were examined. A total of 30 injuries, 15 wounds, 10 cranial trepanations and 78 bone fractures were revealed. Most of the injuries and wounds showed signs of regeneration, knitting consolidation was quite adequate that is partially accounted for by proficiency of people's doctors. It was established that lances and arrows of ancient inhabitants of the Baltic region were of great penetrative strength.

RESUMO

In the investigation 183 first metatarsi and heel bones of ancient and contemporary people have been examined. It has been stated that the first metatarsi in contemporary people exceed in length those of ancient people. The thickness of substantia compacta of the first metatarsus, as well as the thickness of the tuber calcanei and lamina plantaris of the heel bones was more pronounced in ancient people than in contemporary people. Spongious trabeculae in ancient men were greater in number and thickness.

RESUMO

Examinations of 4481 skeletons revealed 70 cases of chronic osteomyelitis, 9 cases of osteotuberculosis and 10 cases of concha bullosa of the concha media nasalis in bronze age. Metadiaphysary forms of osteomyelitis in the long tubular bones with prevalence of ossific proliferation were observed most frequently. Osteotuberculosis existed in Latvia since the most ancient times mainly in the form of spondylitis tuberculosa.
