Situation awareness (SA) is important in many demanding tasks (e.g. driving). Assessing SA during training can indicate whether someone is ready to perform in the real world. SA is typically assessed by interrupting the task to ask questions about the situation or asking questions after task completion, assessing only momentary SA. An objective and continuous means of detecting SA is needed. We examined whether neurophysiological sensors are useful to objectively measure Level 3 SA (projection of events into the future) during a driving task. We measured SA by the speed at which participants responded to SA questions and the accuracy of responses. For EEG, beta and theta power were most sensitive to SA response time. For fNIRS, oxygenated haemoglobin (HbO) was most sensitive to accuracy. This is the first evidence to our knowledge that neurophysiological measures are useful for assessing Level 3 SA during an ecologically valid task.


We examine whether neurophysiological sensors are useful to objectively measure Level 3 situation awareness (SA) prediction during a driving task. EEG theta and beta, and fNIRS oxygenated haemoglobin were most sensitive to SA accuracy. This is evidence that neurophysiological measures can be used to assess hazard prediction (Level 3 SA).

Increased physical activity, such as walking, is often prescribed to address obesity. Several factors that may influence the connection between obesity and walking include the biomechanics of gait, pain, depressive symptoms, physical health, and activity. The objective of this study was to assess the moderation and mediation effects of knee pain and buckling, depressive symptoms, physical activity, and physical health on spatiotemporal gait parameters in individuals with obesity. Forty participants with obesity performed a task in which they walked on flat ground and crossed an obstacle. Measures of knee pain and buckling, depressive symptoms, physical activity, and physical health were collected. We conducted mediation analyses with knee buckling and pain as mediators of the effect of the BMI on spatiotemporal gait parameters. Moderation analyses were performed with depressive symptoms, physical activity, and physical health as moderators of the effect of BMI on spatiotemporal gait parameters. We found that depressive symptoms and physical health moderated the relationship between BMI and Step Width in people with obesity. These effects were pronounced when participants crossed an obstacle. In conclusion, depressed mood and physical health influence the relationship between obesity and walking. These factors present potential avenues for rehabilitation interventions to aid individuals with obesity.

Bimanual coordination is an essential feature of the motor system, yet interactions between the limbs during independent control remain poorly understood. Interference between the two hands, or the assimilation of movement characteristics between the two effectors, can be induced by perturbing one arm (e.g., via visuomotor rotation) and then measuring the effects in the contralateral limb. In this study, we sought to further determine the role adaptation plays in bimanual interference using a structural learning paradigm to alter feedback regulation in reaching. We trained healthy participants to counter 60 unique random rotations in right hand visual feedback over 240 reaches. Following this, we assessed feedforward and feedback measures of interference in a bimanual reaching task where the right hand was exposed to a fixed visual feedback rotation while the left hand reached without visual feedback. We found that participants who had been exposed to the structural training task in the right hand showed increased left hand interference during the first 20 trials of the test task. Moreover, interference was greater in feedback, rather than feedforward control parameters. The results further suggest that structural learning enhances bimanual interference via sensory feedback upregulation.

Background: Early childhood is important for cognitive and social-emotional development, and a time in which to promote healthy movement behaviors (sedentary behavior, physical activity, and sleep). Movement behaviors may have interactive influences on cognition and social-emotional factors in young children, but most previous research has explored them independently. The purpose of this study was to determine if movement behaviors are associated with measures of cognitive and social-emotional health in young children and if so, to describe optimal compositions of movement behaviors of a daily cycle for such outcomes. Methods: Children (n = 388, 33 to 70 months, 44.6% female) from a clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03285880, first posted September 18, 2017) wore accelerometers on their wrists for 24-h for 9.56 ± 3.3 days. Movement behavior compositions consisted of time spent in sedentary behaviors, light intensity physical activity, moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA), and sleep. Outcomes were cognitive (receptive vocabulary, declarative and procedural memory, and executive attention) and social-emotional measures (temperament and behavioral problems). Compositional linear regression models with isometric log ratios were used to investigate the relations between the movement behavior composition and the cognitive and social-emotional health measures. If a significant association was found between the composition and an outcome, we further explored the "optimal" 24-h time-use for said outcome. Results: Movement behavior compositions were associated with receptive vocabulary. The composition associated with the predicted top five percent of vocabulary scores consisted of 12.1 h of sleep, 4.7 h of sedentary time, 5.6 h of light physical activity, and 1.7 h of MVPA. Conclusions: While behavior compositions are related to vocabulary ability in early childhood, our findings align with the inconclusiveness of the current evidence regarding other developmental outcomes. Future research exploring activities within these four movement behaviors, that are meaningful to cognitive and social-emotional development, may be warranted. OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a significant global health concern that involves motor impairment, including deficits in gait and balance. A simple tool would be useful to capture gait and balance impairment in obesity. We assessed whether the Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) captures impairment in individuals with obese BMI (≥30 kg/m2) and whether impairment was related to spatiotemporal gait parameters. METHODS: Fourteen individuals with obese BMI and twenty individuals of normal weight underwent the FGA. Spatiotemporal gait parameters were collected while participants walked on a pressure sensitive walkway under five conditions: pre-baseline (flat ground walking), crossing small, medium, and high obstacles, and final-baseline (flat ground walking). RESULTS: Individuals with obesity had lower scores on the FGA (p≤0.001) and showed less efficient spatiotemporal gait parameters than healthy controls, particularly when crossing over obstacles (all ps≤0.05). For participants with obesity, lower FGA scores were associated with decreased gait velocity, but only during obstacle crossing (p≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The FGA may be a useful tool to capture gait impairment in populations with obesity. Obstacles may help reveal meaningful gait impairments. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the FGA in individuals with obesity, and represents a proof-of-concept that motivates further validation studies.

Humans readily entrain their movements to a beat, including matching their gait to a prescribed tempo. Rhythmic auditory cueing tasks have been used to enhance stepping behavior in a variety of clinical populations. However, there is limited understanding of how temporal accuracy of gait changes over practice in healthy young adults. In this study, we examined how inter-step interval and cadence deviated from slow, medium, and fast tempos across steps within trials, across trials within blocks, and across two blocks that bookended a period of practice of walking to each tempo. Participants were accurate in matching the tempo at the slow and medium tempos, while they tended to lag behind the beat at the fast tempo. We also found that participants showed no substantial improvement across steps and trials, nor across blocks, suggesting that participants had a robust ability to entrain their gait to the specified metronome tempo. However, we did find that participants habituated to the prescribed tempo, showing self-paced gait that was faster than self-paced baseline gait after the fast tempo, and slower than self-paced baseline gait after the slow tempo. These findings might represent an "after-effect" in the temporal domain, akin to after-effects consistently shown in other sensorimotor tasks. This knowledge of how healthy participants entrain their gait to temporal cues may have important implications in understanding how clinical populations acquire and modify their gait in rhythmic auditory cueing tasks.

ABSTRACT: With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers have been faced with challenges in maintaining interdisciplinary research collaborations. The purpose of this article is to apply and expand a previously introduced model to sustaining new interdisciplinary research collaborations: Forging Alliances in Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Research (FAIRR). FAIRR is a logic model that can be used as a guide to create interdisciplinary rehabilitation research teams. In this article, the authors propose expanding FAIRR by including strategies for sustaining interdisciplinary rehabilitation research collaborations: modifying inputs (resources needed to assemble a team and to conduct research activities), shifting activities (steps taken to move the interdisciplinary collaboration forward), and examining what impacts the fit between inputs and activities. Two examples are used to highlight the application of the FAIRR model to interdisciplinary collaborations during COVID-19.

When simultaneously performing asymmetrical movements with both hands, there is a tendency for the action of one limb to interfere with control of the other. Little is known about how sensory feedback influences interference. We conducted two experiments to determine how manipulating force feedback and visual feedback alter bimanual coordination during center-out reaching. In the adaptive experiment, asymmetrical reaching was induced by a visual feedback rotation for the right hand while the left hand operated under kinesthetic control (i.e., without visual feedback); in the non-adaptive experiment, asymmetrical reaching was induced by having participants move their right hand to rotated targets under veridical visual feedback, again with the left hand operating under kinesthetic control. In both experiments, we applied a spring resistive force to each hand, with different groups of participants experiencing 0 N/m, 30 N/m, or 60 N/m of resistance. In the adaptive experiment, interference increased with an increase in the force demands for movement in a dose-response fashion (i.e., the higher the resistive force, the larger the interference), but this result did not hold generally for the non-adaptive experiment. Our results indicate that adapting to a visuomotor perturbation may increase sensitivity to feedback gains, including to sensory information not present in the perturbation. Additionally, interference may reflect the application of an explicit strategy used for one limb to control the other, and the addition of an implicit adapting process may bolster this communication of motor information across motor cortices.

In this study, we investigated brain dynamics during interference between hands during bimanual movements. Participants performed a bimanual center-out reaching task in which a visuomotor rotation was applied to the right hand while the left hand did not receive visual feedback of its movements. This manipulation resulted in interference from the adapting right hand to the kinesthetically guided left hand. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings during the task showed that spectral power in the high and low beta frequency bands was elevated early in exposure, but decreased throughout learning. This may be representative of error-based updating of internal models of movement. Additionally, coherence, a measure of neural functional connectivity, was elevated both within and between hemispheres in the beta frequencies during the initial presentation of the visuomotor rotation, and then decreased throughout adaptation. This suggests that beta oscillatory neural activity may be marker for transmission of conflicting motor information between hemispheres, which manifests in interference between the hands during asymmetrical bimanual movements.

Sleep benefits memory consolidation across a variety of domains in young adults. However, while declarative memories benefit from sleep in young children, such improvements are not consistently seen for procedural skill learning. Here we examined whether performance improvements on a procedural task, although not immediately observed, are evident after a longer delay when augmented by overnight sleep (24 h after learning). We trained 47 children, aged 33-71 months, on a serial reaction time task and, using a within-subject design, evaluated performance at three time points: immediately after learning, after a daytime nap (nap condition) or equivalent wake opportunity (wake condition), and 24 h after learning. Consistent with previous studies, performance improvements following the nap did not differ from performance improvements following an equivalent interval spent awake. However, significant benefits of the nap were found when performance was assessed 24 h after learning. This research demonstrates that motor skill learning is benefited by sleep, but that this benefit is only evident after an extended period of time.
