Cycle control on low-dose oral contraceptives: a comparative trial.

Cycle control was studied comparing the monophasic oral contraceptive Loestrin with three low-dose phasic preparations (Triphasil, Ortho 10/11 and Ortho 7/7/7) in 391 women of whom 300 completed 6 cycles. Loestrin subjects had a rate of occurrence (31% of cycles) for intermenstrual bleeding (IMB) comparable to the rates for subjects on the phasic preparations (36%, 37% and 37%, respectively). Triphasil subjects had lower rates than the Ortho 10/11 and Ortho 7/7/7 subjects (p less than 0.01) in cycle one when all subjects were analyzed and in pre-study users when continuing menstrual flow (CMF) episodes were not included as IMB. IMB was a cause for dropping out of the study in 7% of subjects who were evenly distributed between groups. There were no differences between groups for BTB when perceived by subjects as a side effect. Spotting was perceived as a side effect more often with Ortho 10/11 and Ortho 7/7/7 use than with Triphasil (p less than 0.01). Loestrin, Ortho 10/11 and Ortho 7/7/7 subjects were more likely to report amenorrhea (p less than 0.001) and less likely to report leg cramps (p less than 0.01) compared to those on Triphasil. Triphasil subjects were less likely to report acne than subjects on Ortho 7/7/7 (p less than 0.01).

[Post-ligation syndrome: a follow-up of 556 cases, 5 to 8 years after tubal sterilization]. / Le syndrome post-ligature: une relance de 556 cas, cinq à huit ans après stérilisation tubaire.

Five to eight years later, we obtained an answer in 66.3% of 556 patients who had a sterilization between January 1978 and end of December 1981, in order to find any complication forming the so called Post-sterilization Syndrome. We traced back 80.6% of 62 patients who showed a genital pathology at the time of their surgery. We also could obtain an answer in 64.6% of 494 patients who had no apparent genital pathology at the time of their sterilization. We found that 12 patients of the first and 25 patients of the second group (10%) had suffered a major gynecological surgery since their sterilization. But in studying their records, we found that all their surgery was surgically indicated like for fibroids, prolapse, cervical cancer, etc. Three patients of the first and 16 patients of the second group (5%) showed bleeding problems which necessitated a D & C. In all, considering the age of the patients, there was no relationship between the sterilization and the rate of complications.

[Study of 500 cases of sterilization by tubal ligation]. / Etude de 500 cas de stérilisation par ligature des trompes.

PIP: The authors examined 500 consecutive tubal ligations performed at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital during the years 1970-2, with a follow-up of 5 years or more. The majority of these patients were contacted either at the Clinic or by phone in 1977. The posttubal ligation failure frequency rate was 0.8% uncorrected and 0.6% corrected. 8.6% of the cases required at least 1 consultation due to menorrhagia or metrorrhagia; however, this elevated figure was found mainly in the group of women ages 36-45 years. The postpartum sterilization group formed 16.4% of the patients, and the remaining 43.2%. In this latter group, 3 patients became pregnant. The great majority of the women were Catholic (99.8%) but it is not known if they were still practicing their religion. (author's)^ieng
