RESUMO

We spatially expand and subsequently contract the motional thermal state of a levitated nanoparticle using a hybrid trapping scheme. The particle's center-of-mass motion is initialized in a thermal state (temperature 155 mK) in an optical trap and then expanded by subsequent evolution in a much softer Paul trap in the absence of optical fields. We demonstrate expansion of the motional state's standard deviation in position by a factor of 24. In our system, state expansion occurs devoid of backaction from photon recoil, making this approach suitable for coherent wave function expansion.

RESUMO

Tissues are generally subjected to external stresses, a potential stimulus for their differentiation or remodeling. While single-cell rheology has been extensively studied leading to controversial results about nonlinear response, mechanical tissue behavior under external stress is still poorly understood, in particular, the way individual cell properties translate at the tissue level. Herein, using magnetic cells we were able to form perfectly monitored cellular aggregates (magnetic molding) and to deform them under controlled applied stresses over a wide range of timescales and amplitudes (magnetic rheometer). We explore the rheology of these minimal tissue models using both standard assays (creep and oscillatory response) as well as an innovative broad spectrum solicitation coupled with inference analysis thus being able to determine in a single experiment the best rheological model. We find that multicellular aggregates exhibit a power-law response with nonlinearities leading to tissue stiffening at high stress. Moreover, we reveal the contribution of intracellular (actin network) and intercellular components (cell-cell adhesions) in this aggregate rheology.

RESUMO

Speckle patterns are ubiquitous in optics and have multiple applications for which the control of their spatial correlations is essential. Here, we report on a method to engineer speckle correlations behind a scattering medium through the singular value decomposition of the transmission matrix. We not only demonstrate control over the speckle grain size and shape but also realize patterns with nonlocal correlations. Moreover, we show that the reach of our method extends also along the axial dimension, allowing volumetric speckle engineering behind scattering layers.
