RESUMO

This descriptive study was done to evaluate the clinical, biochemical and radiological findings of primary hyperthyroidism (pHPT) patients with parathyroid adenoma. This study was done in the department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck surgery, BIRDEM, Dhaka from July 2000 to June 2007. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical presentation, biochemical and radiological features from the case records from the last 7 years of 32 patients at a tertiary care centre in Dhaka who had documented pHPT due to adenoma. Of them 18 were male and 14 were female. Mean age±SD of the patients was 42.16±11.64 years. Median preoperative serum calcium, serum phosphate and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were 11.42 mg/dL (range 8.4-14.0mg/dL), 3.11 mg/dL (range 2.5-4.5) and 293.22 pg/mL (range 65-700 pg/mL), respectively. Of all patients 75% had raised serum calcium level and 100.0% had raised serum PTH levels but all had normal serum phosphate level. Common radiological features were nephrocalcinosis, renal calculi, osteopenic changes in finger and toe, Brown tumour in forearm, 'Salt and pepper' appearance in skull, fracture of femur, fracture radius. pHPT due to adenoma in Bangladesh continues to be a symptomatic disorder with skeletal and renal manifestations.

RESUMO

The title complex, [Cu(NO(3))(C(3)H(8)N(2)S(2))(2)]NO(3), represents a low-symmetry polymorph (P-1, Z = 4) of a previously reported form [P-1, Z = 2; Ali et al. (2011 ▶). Polyhedron, 30, 542-548]. The Cu(II) atom in each independent cation is found within a distorted square-pyramidal N(2)S(2)O coordination geometry defined by two N,S-bidentate ligands and an O atom derived from a monodentate nitrate. The primary difference between the cations is found in the relative orientations of the coordinated nitrate groups, which are directed to opposite sides of the mol-ecule. Supra-molecular layers along [110] and sustained by N-H⋯O inter-actions feature in the crystal packing. These are connected along the c axis by C-H⋯O inter-actions.

RESUMO

In the title compound, C(14)H(14)N(2)S(3), the thione S atom and methyl group are syn, as are the two thio-ether S atoms. The mol-ecule is twisted, the dihedral angles between the central (C(2)N(2)S(2)) residue and the pendent 2-thienyl and phenyl rings being 21.57 (6) and 77.54 (3)°, respectively. In the crystal, mol-ecules assemble into a three-dimensional architecture via C-H⋯π inter-actions, involving both the five- and six-membered rings as acceptors, as well as S⋯S inter-actions [3.3406 (5) Å] between centrosymmetrically related 2-thienyl rings.

RESUMO

The ligand Me(8)[14]diene, L, in its free state as well as in the dihydroperchlorate form, L.2HClO(4), coordinates copper(ll) in different salts to yield a series of [CuLX(x)] X(y)(H(2)O)(z) complexes where X = NO(3), ClO(4), NCS, Cl and Br; x and y may have values of 0 or 2 and z = 0, 1 or 2. The complex, [CuL(ClO(4))(2)].2H(2)O is found to undergo axial ligand substitution reactions with SCN(-), NO(3) and Cl(-) to give a variety of substitution derivatives: [CuL(ClO(4))(m) X(n)] where X = NCS, NO(3) and Cl; m = 0 or 1, and n = 1 or 2. The complexes .have been characterised on the basis of analytical, spectroscopic, magnetic and conductance data. The anti-fungal activities of the ligand and its complexes have been investigated against a range of phytopathogenic fungi.

RESUMO

We report here the cloning of a novel form of the murine glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) receptor. Northern blot analyses of various mouse tissues, including whole brain, demonstrated the existence of multiple transcripts of GDNF receptor. Screening of an adult mouse liver cDNA library yielded two isoforms of the receptor. One of the forms (alpha) shows a high degree of homology with other mammalian GDNFR-alpha and the other novel form (beta) is identical to the alpha form except for a deletion of five amino acids. These two forms do not share high sequence homologies with the recently isolated neurturin receptor. Both the alpha and beta forms are expressed in various murine tissues but not in muscle.

RESUMO

Three isomeric Me(8)[14]anes, L(A), L(B) and L(C), undergo complexation with copper(II) salts to form a series of [CuLX(n)(H(2)O)(x)]X(y).(H(2)O)(z) complexes where L = L(A), L(B) and L(C); X = Cl, Br, NO(3); n, x, y and z may have values of 0, 1 or 2. The complexes have been characterised on the basis of analytical, spectroscopic, magnetic and conductance data. Further, the X-ray crystal structure of one complex, [CuL(B)(OH(2))(2)](NO(3))(2), has been determined. The antifungal activity of all three isomeric ligands and their complexes has been investigated against a range of phytopathogenic fungi.

RESUMO

Inferior Vena Cava obstruction as a major cause of hepatic venous outflow block is not so common. A prospective study of 20 cases gave us an opportunity to device a management protocol for this disorder. Out of 20 cases we had studied, 12 had only inferior Vena Cava obstruction while rest of the 8 cases had both hepatic vein and IVC blockade. However, balloon cavoplasty showed remarkable results with substantial clinical and haemodynamic improvement in cases with isolated IVC obstruction. Therefore, we suggest that patients with IVC obstruction should be actively managed with Vena-cavography followed by cavoplasty. Treatment of Hepatic venous obstruction along with IVC obstruction is controversial; bypass shunt is usually required and long term follow-up studies are required to establish safety and efficacy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is frequently regarded as a psychological disorder. Data on objective evaluation of psychological abnormalities among IBS patients and control subjects are scanty in our country. We therefore objectively studied patients with IBS. METHODS: 42 patients satisfying the Manning's criteria and Munich workers' for diagnosis of IBS underwent psychological evaluation using the following tests: a) Eyesenck personality questionnaire. b) State and trait anxiety inventory according to Speilberger's method. c) Hamilton depression rating scale for detection of depression. d) Whitely index of hypochondriasis and discriminant function by Pilowsky's illness behavior questionnaire. RESULTS: Neuroticism was detected in 76% of IBS patients compared to 9% in control population (p < 0.01). State and trait anxiety scores were 44.5 +/- 17.1 and 49.0 +/- 15.3 respectively in IBS patients; these were higher than those in controls (35.5 +/- 7.5 and 41.2 +/- 6.1 respectively; p < 0.01). Severe depression was observed in 26% of IBS patients and 6% of control subjects (p < 0.05). Significantly higher hypochondriasis score was observed in IBS patients as compared to controls (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Neuroticism, hypochondriasis and depression were significantly more prevalent in IBS patients attending a clinic, compared to control population.

RESUMO

Eight bacteria, each of the genus Bacillus, two actinomycetes, each of the genus Streptomyces, and six fungi, one each of the genus Penicillium and Chaetomium and four of the genus Aspergillus, were isolated on AlPO4-sucrose agar from a typical Indian lateritic soil (Typic Ochragualf). All of them were capable of solubilizing Ca3(PO4)2 to a higher degree than AlPO4. Bacillus subtilis (B-7655), LAB4, Bacillus sp., LAB5, Penicillium sp., LAF2, and Aspergillus spp., LAF3 and LAF4, were solubilizing Ca3(PO4)2 very efficiently, but AlPO4 to a lesser degree. Bacillus spp., LAB1, LAB2, LAB5, LAB6 and LAB7, Chaetomium nigricolor, LAF1, and Aspergillus spp., LAF5 and LAF6, were unable to bring detectable amounts of soluble phosphorus to solution from AlPO4. Except Chaetomium, all the other organisms produced free aliphatic organic acid in detectable amounts. The organic acids produced were oxalic, succinic, citric, and 2-keto gluconic acid. 2-Keto gluconic acid, singly and in combination with succinic or citric acid, accounted for higher solubilization. Amount of free organic acids in the growth medium was not directly correlated with phosphate solubilization.
