RESUMO

In this study, hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite was used as a novel adsorbent to eliminate Nile blue (NB) dye and hexavalent chromium ion (Cr(VI)) from aqueous media. Different analyses such as FTIR, Map, SEM, EDX, BET, and XRD were used to study the characteristics of the composite. The highest sorption efficiencies of Cr(VI) and NB at pH 2 and 10 were 97.63% and 98.83%, respectively, which are significant values. Equilibrium and kinetic studies of the sorption process showed that the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model can better describe the equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the sorption process. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum sorption capacities of NB dye and Cr(VI) ion using the hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite were 0.259 and 0.938 mmol/g, respectively. Also, the results of the thermodynamic study showed that the sorption process is favorable (ΔS° = - 34.2 kJ/mol·K for Cr(VI) and - 144.6 kJ/mol·K for NB), spontaneous (ΔG° < 0), and exothermic (ΔH° = - 27.99 kJ/mol for Cr(VI) and - 64.2 kJ/mol for NB). Moreover, the desorption process of both contaminants using the hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite showed that the H2SO4 solution with a concentration of 3 mol/L can remove both contaminants separately with the highest efficiency. Furthermore, the reusability study indicated that the composite can be used in five reuse cycles without significant decrease in its efficiency. Besides, the composite was able to eliminate color, turbidity, COD, and BOD5 from the textile wastewater with removal efficiencies of 93.06, 81.61, 76.05, and 71.88%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, hydroxyapatite@Mn-Fe composite was synthesized and used for the first time to remove Cr(VI) ions and NB dye. In general, the aforementioned composite is recommended for industrial wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Recently, high sulfur content in diesel fuel is one of the main problems that have an effect on combustion and emission characteristics. Iraq is one of many countries in the world that use diesel fuel with high sulfur content. Therefore, the partially premixed combustion ignition (PPCI) concept and different blend ratios of gasoline-diesel (GD30, GD40, and GD50) were suggested in this study to reduce the sulfur content in the fuel, improve the engine performance, and reduce the exhaust emissions. The combined effect of adding gasoline to the diesel fuel and manipulating the fuel injection timings can lead to better and clean combustion. For the same engine operating conditions, it is found that the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) decreases during the combustion of GD blends in comparison with diesel fuel. Furthermore, the results of using GD blends showed a small reduction in brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) compared to the conventional diesel fuel. The exhaust gas temperature reduces from the combination effect of PPCI mode and GD blends, which in turn decreases the NO x emission concentration under variable conditions of engine loads and speeds. It is indicated that the NO x emissions significantly decreased during the combustion of GD30, GD40, and GD50 blends by 25.94, 50.9, and 84%, respectively, in comparison with diesel fuel. In addition, higher reduction in CO and HC formation was obtained during the combustion of conventional fuel in comparison with the combustion of GD blends. The results showed that the number and concentration of PM reduced more when using GD blends and PPCI mode. The average particle diameter (d p) decreased from the combustion of GD blends in comparison with diesel fuel. The particle diameter of the GD blend was varied from 25 to 26 nm compared to those of diesel fuel of 35 and 36 nm under the same engine operating conditions. Reducing the sulfur content in GD blends contributed to a clear reduction in SO2 and H2S emissions by 57.85 and 50.12%, respectively.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to acquire a deeper understanding of the response mechanism that is associated with the formation of CdS thin films. We presented an effective and new hybrid sensitisation technique, which involved the 1-step linker between the related chemical bath deposition (CBD) process and the traditional doping method during CBD for synthesising high-quality, CdS thin films. The mechanism for the combined synthesis of the films is also describes. CdS films were electrostatically bonded to soda-lime glass, causing the formation of the intermediate complexes [Cd(NH3)4]2+, which aided in the collision of these complexes with a soda-lime glass slide. In the one-step fabrication technique, 3-Mercaptopropionic Acid (MPA) was employed as a second source of sulphur ions and a linker molecule. Optical studies showed that the bandgap ranged between (2.26-2.52) eV. CdS + MPA films exhibited a uniform distribution of spherical molecules based on their morphological properties. After annealing, this approach significantly altered the electrical characteristics of CdS films. The CdS + MPA films displayed the highest carrier concentration whereas the CdS + Ag + MPA films exhibited the lowest resistivity, with a jump of 3 orders of magnitude.

RESUMO

The operation of engines using rapeseed methyl ester (RME) and ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) was tested for the combustion properties, emitted regulated, unregulated exhaust pollutants, and the size of nanoparticles. The combustion analysis showed higher apparent heat release rate and shorter ignition delay period during RME combustion than during ULSD combustion. The ULSD engine has a combustion chamber maximum pressure relatively higher than that of RME. This study showed that the heat release rate of ULSD is always higher than that of RME while more fuel consumption occurred from the combustion of biodiesel in comparison with diesel. When the engine is running on RME, HC and NOx formation increased at high loads up to 15% and 13%, respectively; meanwhile, CO concentrations reduced by 30.9% for the same conditions. Most of the particulate matter (PM) emitted from a diesel engine has a particle size from 5 to 100 nm, while the particle size from ULSD ranged from 5 to 40 nm. Overloading the engine caused a decrease in the sizes of emitted PM for both fuels. The smoke number for RME was less than that for ULSD by 33.9% at high loads. For high engine load, the cumulative concentration number for the nucleation mode decreased, while it increased for the accumulation mode. Furthermore, measurements of formaldehyde, ethane, methane, acetylene, ethylene, propylene, and isocyanic acid emissions showed the presence of these harmful substances at very low concentrations (8 ppm) for both fuels.

RESUMO

In this study, a simple and green strategy was reported to prepare bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) by the combination of zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) using Sambucus nigra L. extract. The physicochemical properties of these NPs such as crystal structure, size, and morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results suggested that these NPs contained polygonal ZnO NPs with hexagonal phase and spherical CuO NPs with monoclinic phase. The anticancer activity of the prepared bimetallic NPs was evaluated against lung and human melanoma cell lines based on MTT assay. As a result, the bimetallic ZnO/CuO NPs exhibited high toxicity on melanoma cancer cells while their toxicity on lung cancer cells was low.
