RESUMO

SUMMARY: Invasive fungal sinusitis is a highly lethal infection in an immunocompromised population that can spread rapidly to involve the adjacent structures by direct invasion or through vascular invasion. Involvement of cerebral parenchyma by vascular invasion is a devastating complication in these patients which may lead to vasculitis, thrombus formation, cerebritis, or abscess formation. Here, we present a case of a young male with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who initially presented with COVID-19 lung disease and later developed sinonasal mucormycosis complicated with left orbital cellulitis and pulmonary mucormycosis.

RESUMO

Paraduodenal hernia is a type of internal hernia caused by defects in the peritoneum during fetal development. It is one of the uncommon causes of intestinal obstruction; diagnosing it and intervening promptly are required. In this case report, we describe our experience treating an adult male patient who presented with symptoms of acute small bowel obstruction and was later diagnosed with internal hernia on further evaluation. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate the importance of imaging modalities, particularly computed tomography (CT) scan, in diagnosing these cases. Because of their mysterious symptoms, paraduodenal hernias are usually diagnosed late or incidentally. Although they are uncommon, they are far more likely to cause bowel obstruction and strangulation. Immediate surgical intervention is required following the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Introduction: Dengue fever is a fatal viral illness affecting almost all age groups and is seen in almost all tropical countries. Ultrasonography (USG) can be a useful tool for the assessment and diagnosis of dengue fever. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate X-ray and ultrasound findings in children with dengue fever. Material and Methods: This was a prospective and cross-sectional study that was carried out in a hospital in Mumbai for over one year. All relevant data were collected, validated, and analyzed statistically on the software Epi Info 7. Results: Abnormal X-ray findings noticed were pleural effusion, pneumonia, and bilateral nodular opacities. Pleural effusion and respiratory complications were more common in severe dengue (P < 0.05). Out of the 37 patients on whom USG was done, 33 (89.18%) had abnormal and 4 (10.81%) had normal USG findings. Of the 17 patients with dengue who showed warning signs, 16 (89.9%) had abnormal USG findings. Plasma leakage in the form of ascites and effusion was commonly seen. One hundred percent of patients with severe dengue had abnormal USG findings. The abnormal USG findings were more commonly detected between 5-7 days and were more commonly associated with IgG + IgM-positive serology. Conclusion: Ultrasonography is a good modality for the diagnosis and evaluation of dengue patients. Serial ultrasound should be done for the assessment and evaluation of said patients.

RESUMO

Acute Suppurative Thyroiditis (AST) is a rare, but potentially fatal emergency in the pediatric age group. With a mortality of 3.7% to 9% in AST, it is imperative to make a timely diagnosis and start treatment accordingly. In this case report, we discuss a case of thyroid abscess in a six-year-old, which was diagnosed on ultrasonography (USG)(machine: GE logic 9 USG, Milwaukee) and Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) (machine: 32 slice GE revolution act machine, Milwaukee) of the neck. With this article, we attempt to stress upon the need for quick and accurate diagnosis and timely intervention to prevent complications as the condition is rare and unusual.
