RESUMO

This paper presents the results of an original short-period magnetotelluric survey performed on Vulcano Island (Italy). The obtained three-dimensional resistivity model details structures up to 2.5 km depth, hitherto unexplored. The La Fossa caldera area corresponds to a moderate resistive anomaly, which extends down to the resolved depth and likely represents a "conduit-like" structure along which magmatic fluids stall and ascend. Other resistive anomalies characterize volcanic edifices, craters, volcanic conduits, and/or eruptive fissures. In addition, the shallower hydrothermal system is detected as a conductive anomaly. Sharp resistivity contrasts generally characterize caldera faults. A main N‒S alignment characterizes the island sector, where considerable amounts of deep subsurface fluids accumulate and mix with the ascending magmas related to the most recent volcanic dynamics. The volcanological interpretation of such findings significantly contributes to understanding the geophysical and geochemical anomalies detected in the last year, which involved the Vulcano shallow hydrothermal system, highlighting the potential for possible hydrothermal/phreatic eruptive events.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of punishment in enuretic children and how the punishments can influence therapy response. METHODS: We enrolled 218 enuretic children. The children and their families were asked to participate in the study at the end of the clinical evaluation. RESULTS: The analysis of the questionnaires shows that at least one punishment because of nocturnal enuresis (NE) had been applied to 27 out of 218 (12.4%) children. Punishment methods were reprimanding in 19 out of 27 (70.4%), depriving of sleep in 11 out of 27 (40.7%), mildly beating in 3 out of 27 (11.1%), leaving the child wet in 1 out of 27 (3.7%) and other methods in 2 out of 27 (7.4%). In the group of punished children, a full or partial response in terms of a decreased number of wet nights was achieved in 40.7 vs. 59.2% in children who had not been punished. CONCLUSIONS: Parents should be sensitized on the adverse effects of punishment on child development. It is important in childcare to explain the definitions of the disorder and find the best treatment (behavioural and/or medicinal) depending on the single patient, his/her family and compliance of both. Successful management of NE has benefits to both the child and the family.

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the effect of variations in the size of elastomeric ligatures on the static frictional resistance generated by orthodontic sliding mechanics under dry condition. Frictional forces generated by elastomeric ligatures treated with a lubricating material (silicone) were analyzed as well. An Instron testing machine was used to assess the static frictional forces of a 0.019 x 0.025-inch stainless steel rectangular wire that was ligated to a molar convertible tube and to three stainless steel 0.022-inch pre-adjusted brackets with elastomeric ligatures with different dimensions: small, medium, and large. The static friction produced by two prototypes of silicone-lubricated elastomeric ligatures was also measured. The small and medium elastomeric ligatures produced significantly less friction than the large ligatures. No statistically significant difference was found between small and medium ligatures. The decrease in frictional forces of small and medium modules had to be ascribed mainly to the smaller thickness of both ligatures with respect to large ligatures. The lubricated elastomeric ligatures generated significantly smaller frictional forces than nonlubricated elastomeric ligatures with different dimensions. The variation in the dimensions of the elastomeric ligatures is able to influence the static frictional resistance generated by orthodontic sliding mechanics in the buccal segments. The use of small and medium elastomeric ligatures determines a 13-17% decrease in static friction compared with large ligatures. Silicone-lubricated modules can reduce static friction by 23-34% with respect to the small and medium nonlubricated elastomeric ligatures and by 36-43% compared with nonlubricated large ligatures.
