RESUMO

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and its gene (AGER) have been related to lung injury and inflammatory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to evaluate the association of rs2071288, rs3134940, rs184003, and rs2070600 AGER single-nucleotide variants and the soluble-RAGE plasma and sputum levels with COPD secondary to biomass-burning smoke (BBS) and tobacco smoking. Four groups, including 2189 subjects, were analyzed: COPD secondary to BBS exposure (COPD-BBS, n = 342), BBS-exposed subjects without COPD (BBES, n = 774), tobacco smoking-induced COPD (COPD-TS, n = 434), and smokers without COPD (SWOC, n = 639). Allelic discrimination assays determined the AGER variants. The sRAGE was quantified in plasma (n = 240) and induced-sputum (n = 72) samples from a subgroup of patients using the ELISA technique. In addition, a meta-analysis was performed for the association of rs2070600 with COPD susceptibility. None of the studied genetic variants were found to be associated with COPD-BBS or COPD-TS. A marginal association was observed for the rs3134940 with COPD-BBS (p = 0.066). The results from the meta-analysis, including six case-control studies (n = 4149 subjects), showed a lack of association of rs2070600 with COPD susceptibility (p = 0.681), probably due to interethnic differences. The sRAGE plasma levels were lower in COPD-BBS compared to BBS and in COPD-TS compared to SWOC. The sRAGE levels were also lower in sputum samples from COPD-BBS than BBES. Subjects with rs3134940-TC genotypes exhibit lower sRAGE plasma levels than TT subjects, mainly from the COPD-BBS and SWOC groups. The AGER variants were not associated with COPD-BBS nor COPD-TS, but the sRAGE plasma and sputum levels are related to both COPD-BBS and COPD-TS and are influenced by the rs3134940 variant.

The aim of the present study was to assess the impacts of roasting and the type of extraction solvent (ethanol or water) on the hypolipidemic act ivity of xoconostle fruit peel extracts in a tyloxapol - induced model of hyperlipidemia. Water and ethanol extracts from raw and roasted Opuntia joconostle peels were obtained to quantify the phytochemicals contained within and assess their hypolipidemic ac tivity in rats (n=5) against tyloxapol - induced dyslipidemia (400 mg/kg). The raw ethanol and water extracts, as well as the roasted water extract (200 mg/kg), showed hypolipidemic activity in the tyloxapol - treated group ( p <0.05). In contrast, the roasted s ample extracted with ethanol did not show this effect. The concentrations of phenolic compounds (39.80 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (16.42 ± 0.14 mg QE/g) were higher in the ethanolic extracts than in the aqueous extracts. Conversely, the concentration of beta lains (115.51 ± 1.66 mg/100 g) was higher in the water extracts than in the ethanol extracts. It was concluded that the roasting process modified the concentration of some phytochemicals and their antioxidant capacity in vitro , producing a hypolipidemic ef fect in tyloxapol - induced hyperlipidemic rats


El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el impacto del tostado y del tipo de disolvente de e xtracción (etanol o agua) sobre la actividad hipolipidémica de los extractos de cáscara de frutos de xoconostle en un modelo de hiperlipidemia inducido por el tyloxapol. Se obtuvieron extractos acuosos y etanólicos de cáscara cruda y asada de Opuntia jocon ostle para cuantificar los fitoquímicos que contienen y evaluar su actividad hipolipidémica en ratas (n=5) contra la dislipidemia inducida por el tyloxapol (400 mg/kg). Los extractos acuosos y etanólicos crudos, así como el extracto acuoso tostado (200 mg/ kg), mostraron actividad hipolipidémica en el grupo tratado con tiloxapol ( p <0,05). En cambio, la muestra asada y extraída con etanol no mostró este efecto. Las concentraciones de compuestos fenólicos (39,80 mg GAE/g) y flavonoides (16,42 ± 0,14 mg QE/g) f ueron mayores en los extractos etanólicos que en los acuosos. Por el contrario, la concentración de betalaínas (115,51 ± 1,66 mg/100 g) fue mayor en los extractos acuosos que en los etanólicos. Se concluyó que el proceso de asado modificó la concentración de algunos fitoquímicos y su capacidad antioxidante in vitro , produciendo un efecto hipolipidémico en ratas hiperlipidémicas inducidas por el tyloxapol.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide; the main risk factors associated with the suffering are tobacco smoking (TS) and chronic exposure to biomass-burning smoke (BBS). Different biological pathways have been associated with COPD, especially xenobiotic or drug metabolism enzymes. This research aims to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) profiles associated with COPD from two expositional sources: tobacco smoking and BBS. One thousand-five hundred Mexican mestizo subjects were included in the study and divided into those exposed to biomass-burning smoke and smokers. Genome-wide exome genotyping was carried out using Infinium Exome-24 kit arrays v. 1.2. Data quality control was conducted using PLINK 1.07. For clinical and demographic data analysis, Rstudio was used. Eight SNPs were found associated with COPD secondary to TS and seven SNPs were conserved when data were analyzed by genotype. When haplotype analyses were carried out, five blocks were predicted. In COPD secondary to BBS, 24 SNPs in MGST3 and CYP family genes were associated. Seven blocks of haplotypes were associated with COPD-BBS. SNPs in the ARNT2 and CYP46A1 genes are associated with COPD secondary to TS, while in the BBS comparison, SNPs in CYP2C8, CYP2C9, MGST3, and MGST1 genes were associated with increased COPD risk.

Infections caused by micro-organisms of the genus Candida are becoming a growing health problem worldwide. These fungi are opportunistic commensals that can produce infections-clinically known as candidiasis-in immunocompromised individuals. The indiscriminate use of different anti-fungal treatments has triggered the resistance of Candida species to currently used therapies. In this sense, propolis has been shown to have potent antimicrobial properties and thus can be used as an approach for the inhibition of Candida species. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the anti-Candida effects of a propolis extract obtained from the north of Mexico on clinical isolates of Candida species. Candida species were specifically identified from oral lesions, and both the qualitative and quantitative anti-Candida effects of the Mexican propolis were evaluated, as well as its inhibitory effect on C. albicans isolate's germ tube growth and chemical composition. Three Candida species were identified, and our results indicated that the inhibition halos of the propolis ranged from 7.6 to 21.43 mm, while that of the MFC and FC50 ranged from 0.312 to 1.25 and 0.014 to 0.244 mg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the propolis was found to inhibit germ tube formation (IC50 ranging from 0.030 to 1.291 mg/mL). Chemical composition analysis indicated the presence of flavonoids, including pinocembrin, baicalein, pinobanksin chalcone, rhamnetin, and biochanin A, in the Mexican propolis extract. In summary, our work shows that Mexican propolis presents significant anti-Candida effects related to its chemical composition, and also inhibits germ tube growth. Other Candida species virulence factors should be investigated in future research in order to determine the mechanisms associated with antifungal effects against them.

Extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (commonly called Rosselle or "Jamaica flower" in Mexico) have been shown to have antibiotic and antivirulence properties in several bacteria. Here, an organic extract of H. sabdariffa L. is shown to inhibit motility in Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Typhimurium. The compound responsible for this effect was purified and found to be the hibiscus acid. When tested, this compound also inhibited motility and reduced the secretion of both flagellin and type III secretion effectors. Purified hibiscus acid was not toxic in tissue-cultured eukaryotic cells, and it was able to reduce the invasion of Salmonella Typhimurium in epithelial cells. Initial steps to understand its mode of action showed it might affect membrane proton balance.

The aim of this study is to analyze the skeletal and dentoalveolar morphological characteristics of the maxillary in subjects with a unilateral palatally impacted canine using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). A retrospective clinical study was conducted of 100 adult patients divided into two groups: one consisting of patients with a unilaterally palatally impacted maxillary canine (GI), with the subgroups in the right and left hemiarches (GI-R and GI-L), and the second, without impacted canine, as the control group (CG). The CBCT measured skeletal variables (maxillary basal width and alveolar crest height) and dentoalveolar variables (inclination of the upper incisor, tooth lengths of incisors and canines, arch length, tooth size and bone dental discrepancy). In skeletal variables, statistically significant differences were found in alveolar crest height (ACH) in all groups and subgroups (p < 0.01). In the dentoalveolar variables, there were differences in the angle of the upper incisor (II) and lateral incisor length (LLIL) between the GI and GC and the angle of the upper incisor (II'), arch length (AL') and arch length-tooth size discrepancy (ATD') among the GI subgroups (p < 0.01). There are skeletal and dentoalveolar differences in patients with unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines, with lower angular and linear measurements compared with patients without impaction.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an inflammatory disease characterized by airflow obstruction, commonly present in smokers and subjects exposed to noxious particles product of biomass-burning smoke (BBS). Several association studies have identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in coding genes related to the heat shock proteins family-genes that codify the heat shock proteins (Hsp). Hsp accomplishes critical roles in regulating immune response, antigen-processing, eliminating protein aggregates and co-activating receptors. The presence of SNPs in these genes can lead to alterations in immune responses. We aimed to evaluate the association of SNPs in the HSP90 gene complex and COPD. METHODS: We enrolled 1549 participants, divided into two comparison groups; 919 tobacco-smoking subjects (cases COPD-TS n = 294 and, controls SWOC n = 625) and 630 chronic exposed to BBS (cases COPD-BBS n = 186 and controls BBES n = 444). We genotyped 2 SNPs: the rs13296 in HSP90AB1 and rs2070908 in HSP90B1. RESULTS: Through the dominant model (GC + CC), the rs2070908 is associated with decreased risk (p < 0.01, OR = 0.6) to suffer COPD among chronic exposed BBS subjects. We found an association between rs13296 GG genotype and lower risk (p = 0.01, OR = 0.22) to suffer severe COPD-TS forms in the severity analysis. CONCLUSIONS: single-nucleotide variants in the HSP90AB1 and HSP90B1 genes are associated with decreased COPD risk in subjects exposed to BBS and the most severe forms of COPD in tobacco-smoking subjects.

Introducción: La asociación entre la diabetes mellitus y las periodontopatías se ha reportado en numerosos estudios. Se acepta que la interrelación entre ambas es bidireccional. Un alto porcentaje de los estudios epidemiológicos, así como de los estudios en animales de experimentación, sugieren que la presencia de una condición tiende a aumentar el riesgo y la severidad de la otra. Objetivo: Consolidar núcleos teóricos y evidencias clínicas que esclarezcan la relación entre la enfermedad periodontal inmunoinflamatoria crónica y el descontrol metabólico del paciente diabético. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión de la literatura disponible a través de la búsqueda automatizada en las bases de datos: PubMed, Scielo y Google Académico, en el período de enero - junio de 2020. La estrategia de búsqueda se realizó a nivel de título, resumen y palabras clave de los artículos, con el uso de conectores lógicos. Se evaluaron artículos de revisión, de investigación, metaanálisis, de autores cubanos e internacionales que hicieran referencia específicamente al tema de estudio a través del título. Resultados: Fueron seleccionados 29 textos científicos, escritos en idioma español e inglés, publicados entre el año 2005 y el 2019, de los cuales 27 eran artículos científicos de revistas y 2 libros de texto. Conclusiones: La mayor parte de las publicaciones revisadas sobre el tema, avalan la relación entre enfermedad periodontal y descontrol metabólico diabético, basados en estudios clínicos y hemoquímicos. Existen investigadores que sugieren continuidad de estudios para perfeccionar metodologías, esclarecer teorías y sobredimensionamiento de la asociación. La valoración de las periodontopatías, como factor de riesgo para el descontrol metabólico del diabético, debe pasar de una interrogante a una estrategia promocional, preventiva y terapéutica(AU)


Introduction: The association between Diabetes Mellitus and periodontopathies has been reported in numerous studies. It is accepted that the interrelation between the two is bidirectional. A high percentage of epidemiological studies, as well as studies in experimental animals, suggest that the presence of one condition tends to increase the risk and severity of the other. Objective: Consolidate theoretical nuclei and clinical evidence that clarify the relationship between chronic immune-mediated inflammatory periodontal disease and the metabolic decontrol of the diabetic patient. Methods: A review of the available literature was performed through the automated search in the following databases: PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar, in the period January-June 2020. The search strategy was carried out through the title, abstract and keywords levels of the articles, with the use of logic connectors. Review, research and meta-analysis articles and by Cuban and international authors ones were assessed and that make specific reference to the studied topic through the title. Results: 29 scientific texts were selected; those were written in Spanish and English, published between 2005 and 2019, of which 27 were articles from a scientific journal and 2 were textbooks. Conclusions: Most of the publications reviewed on the subject endorse the relation between periodontal disease and diabetic metabolic decontrol, based on clinical and hemochemical studies. There are researchers who suggest continuity of studies to improve methodologies, clarify theories and oversize the association. The evaluation of periodontopathies as a risk factor for the metabolic decontrol of the diabetic must go from a question to a promotional, preventive and therapeutic strategy(AU)

Plant cuticles have attracted attention because they can be used to produce hydrophobic films as models for novel biopolymers. Usually, cuticles are obtained from agroresidual waste. To find new renewable natural sources to design green and commercially available bioplastics, fruits of S. aculeatissimum and S. myriacanthum were analyzed. These fruits are not used for human or animal consumption, mainly because the fruit is composed of seeds. Fruit peels were object of enzymatic and chemical methods to get thick cutins in good yields (approximately 77% from dry weight), and they were studied by solid-state resonance techniques (CPMAS 13C NMR), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and direct injection electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DIESI-MS) analytical methods. The main component of S. aculeatissimum cutin is 10,16-dihydroxypalmitic acid (10,16-DHPA, 69.84%), while S. myriacanthum cutin besides of 10,16-DHPA (44.02%); another two C18 monomers: 9,10,18-trihydroxy-octadecanoic acid (24.03%) and 18-hydroxy-9S,10R-epoxy-octadecanoic acid (9.36%) are present. The hydrolyzed cutins were used to produce films demonstrating that both cutins could be a potential raw material for different biopolymers.

BACKGROUND: A variety of organic materials (biomass) are burned for cooking and heating purposes in poorly ventilated houses; smoke from biomass combustion is considered an environmental risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD. In this study, we attempted to determine the participation of single-nucleotide variants in the HHIP (hedgehog-interacting protein) gene in lung function, HHIP serum levels, and HHIP sputum supernatant levels in Mexican women with and without COPD who were exposed to biomass-burning smoke. METHODS: In a case-control study (COPD-BS, n = 186, BBES, n = 557) in Mexican women, three SNPs (rs13147758, rs1828591, and rs13118928) in the HHIP gene were analyzed by qPCR; serum and supernatant sputum protein levels were determined through ELISA. RESULTS: The rs13118928 GG genotype is associated with decreased risk (p = 0.021, OR = 0.51, CI95% = 0.27-0.97) and the recessive genetic model (p = 0.0023); the rs1828591-rs13118928 GG haplotype is also associated with decreased risk (p = 0.04, OR = 0.65, CI95% 0.43-0.98). By the dominant model (rs13118928), the subjects with one or two copies of the minor allele (G) exhibited higher protein levels. Additionally, two correlations with the AG genotype were identified: BBES with FEV1 (p = 0.03, r2 = 0.53) and COPD-BS with FEV1/FVC (p = 0.012, r2 = 0.54). CONCLUSIONS: Single-nucleotide variants in the HHIP gene are associated with decreased COPD risk, higher HHIP serum levels, and better lung function in Mexican women exposed to biomass burning.

Purpose: The protease inhibitor S (PiS) and Z (PiZ) variants have been stated as the only genetic cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Caucasians. However, its frequency in admixed populations is low. We aimed to identify genetic susceptibility between PiS (rs17580) and PiZ (rs28929474) polymorphisms with COPD related to tobacco smoking and biomass-burning smoke as well as to determine its frequencies in Mestizo and Amerindian populations from Mexico. Patients and Methods: One thousand and eight hundred seventy-eight subjects were included in two comparisons of cases and controls, (1) smokers with and without COPD (COPD-S, n=399; SWOC, n=1106); (2) Biomass-burning smoke-exposed subjects with and without COPD (COPD-BS, n=98; BBES, n=275). In addition, 2354 Mexican subjects identified as Mestizos (n=1952) and Amerindian (n=402) were included. The population structure was evaluated using 59 informative ancestry markers. Results: The AT genotype of rs17580 is associated with COPD in both comparisons (COPD-S vs SWOC p<0.001, OR=2.16; COPD-BS vs BBES p<0.0001, OR=11.50). The population of the Mexico-North has a greater Caucasian contribution (54.7%) compared to the center (46.9%) and southeast (42.7%). Conclusion: The rs17580, AT genotype, is associated with COPD in Mexican-Mestizo smokers and exposed to biomass-burning smoke. The rs17580 AT is more frequent in the Mexican-Mestizo population of the North of the country, which has a high Caucasian component.

Introducción: Las bolsas periodontales reales constituyen un reservorio importante de bacterias gramnegativas que pueden por diversas vías ejercer influencia en sitios distantes, lo cual provoca alteraciones sistémicas como las enfermedades derivadas de la aterosclerosis. Objetivo: Explicar los fundamentos teóricos que sustentan la propuesta de la periodontitis crónica como un factor de riesgo para el infarto cerebral isquémico. Contenido: 1) La aterosclerosis y las enfermedades cerebrovasculares, generalidades de su patogenia. 2) La microbiota periodontal, fundamentos de su asociación con la aterosclerosis y la enfermedad cerebrovascular isquémica. Exposición del tema: La inflamación es un elemento de vital importancia en todas las fases del proceso aterosclerótico, tanto en su inicio, progresión, como en sus complicaciones. La naturaleza de las enfermedades periodontales inmunoinflamatorias crónicas y la infección subgingival anaerobia asociada a ellas, representa una injuria metastásica que produce y disemina mediadores inflamatorios favorecedores de la ateroesclerosis, participando en la colonización, y ruptura de placas ateromatosas; procesos implicados en la patogenia del infarto cerebral isquémico. Consideraciones finales: El mayor conocimiento de la relación riesgosa entre periodontitis crónica e infarto cerebral isquémico, permitiría una utilización racional de estrategias de prevención y tratamiento de la enfermedad cerebrovascular, basadas en la detección de procesos inflamatorios como las periodontopatías crónicas(AU)


Introduction: True periodontal pockets are an important reservoir of gram-negative bacteria which may exert an influence on distant sites in a variety of manners, bringing about systemic alterations such as diseases derived from atherosclerosis. Objective: Explain the theoretical foundations supporting the proposal of chronic periodontitis as a risk factor for ischemic stroke. Content: 1) Atherosclerosis and cerebrovascular disease, an overview of their pathogenesis. 2) The periodontal microbiota, bases for its association with atherosclerosis and ischemic stroke Topic presentation: Inflammation is an element of vital importance in all the stages of the atherosclerotic process, be it its onset, progress or complications. By their nature, chronic immunoinflammatory periodontal diseases and the associated anaerobic subgingival infection, constitute a metastatic injury that produces and spreads inflammatory mediators leading to atherosclerosis and participating in the colonization and rupture of atheromatous plaques, which are processes involved in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Final considerations: Better knowledge about the risk relationship between chronic periodontitis and ischemic stroke would allow a rational use of strategies for the prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular disease based on detection of inflammatory processes such as chronic periodontal conditions(AU)

Introducción: El agrandamiento gingival es el aumento exagerado y desfigurante del volumen de la encía. Su aparición se asocia a fármacos, entre los que se encuentran los inmunosupresores y los bloqueadores de los canales de calcio como la ciclosporina A y amlodipino. Objetivo: Describir un caso clínico de agrandamiento gingival asociado a ciclosporina A y amlodipino, con periodontitis crónica subyacente, su tratamiento y prevención de recidiva. Presentación del caso: Paciente masculino, de 50 años de edad, antecedentes de hipertensión arterial, asma bronquial y hepatitis C, además de presentar insuficiencia renal crónica para la cual se le realizó un trasplante renal. Recibe tratamiento con ciclosporina A y amlodipino. Al examen clínico se observaron aumento de volumen generalizado en la encía, que cubría completamente la corona de los dientes, bolsas periodontales de 5 a 8 mm, sangramiento gingival y movilidad dentaria. Principales comentarios: El proceso diagnóstico permitió comprobar que además del agrandamiento gingival generalizado existía una periodontitis crónica generalizada. Conclusiones: La ingestión de un inmunosupresor como la ciclosporina A con el uso de un bloqueador de los canales de calcio, el amlodipino, y la influencia de factores de connotación local, parecen ser los responsables de la aparición combinada del agrandamiento gingival generalizado y la periodontitis crónica concomitante. La fase higiénica contribuyó considerablemente a mejorar el estado periodontal, cuya solución definitiva se alcanzó con la cirugía periodontal convencional. Se corrobora la importancia del examen periodontal en pacientes candidatos a trasplantes de órganos(AU)


Introduction: Gingival enlargement is an exaggerated and disfiguring increase in gum volume, associating its appearance with drugs like immunosuppressants and calcium channel's blockers such as cyclosporine A and Amlodipine. Objective: To describe a clinical case of gingival enlargement associated to cyclosporine A and amlodipine, presenting chronic underlying periodontitis, its treatment and prevention in case of recurrence. Case Presentation: Male patient, 50 years old with a history of arterial hypertension, bronchial asthma and hepatitis C, and presenting chronic renal failure leading renal transplant. The patient was treated with cyclosporine A and amlodipine. In the clinical examination was observed an increased volume in the gum, which completely covered the crown of the teeth, also periodontal bags of 5 to 8 mm, gingival bleeding and dental mobility. Main Comments: The diagnostic process allowed to verify that in addition to the generalized gingival enlargement there was a generalized chronic periodontitis. Conclusions: The ingestion of an immunosuppressant such as Cyclosporin A with the use of a calcium channel's blocker, amlodipine, and the influence of local connotation factors seem to be responsible for the combined appearance of generalized gingival enlargement and concomitant chronic periodontitis. The hygienic phase contributed considerably to improve the periodontal state, whose definitive solution was achieved with conventional periodontal surgery. The importance of periodontal examination in patients who are candidates for organ transplants is corroborated(AU)

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) comprises a group of 24 species, many of which are opportunistic pathogens of immunocompromised patients and also are widely distributed in agricultural soils. Several Bcc strains synthesize strain-specific antagonistic compounds. In this study, the broad killing activity of B. cenocepacia TAtl-371, a Bcc strain isolated from the tomato rhizosphere, was characterized. This strain exhibits a remarkable antagonism against bacteria, yeast and fungi including other Bcc strains, multidrug-resistant human pathogens and plant pathogens. Genome analysis of strain TAtl-371 revealed several genes involved in the production of antagonistic compounds: siderophores, bacteriocins and hydrolytic enzymes. In pursuit of these activities, we observed growth inhibition of Candida glabrata and Paraburkholderia phenazinium that was dependent on the iron concentration in the medium, suggesting the involvement of siderophores. This strain also produces a previously described lectin-like bacteriocin (LlpA88) and here this was shown to inhibit only Bcc strains but no other bacteria. Moreover, a compound with an m/z 391.2845 with antagonistic activity against Tatumella terrea SHS 2008T was isolated from the TAtl-371 culture supernatant. This strain also contains a phage-tail-like bacteriocin (tailocin) and two chitinases, but the activity of these compounds was not detected. Nevertheless, the previous activities are not responsible for the whole antimicrobial spectrum of TAtl-371 seen on agar plates, suggesting the presence of other compounds yet to be found. In summary, we observed a diversified antimicrobial activity for strain TAtl-371 and believe it supports the biotechnological potential of this Bcc strain as a source of new antimicrobials.

Introducción: se reporta a la periodontitis como factor de riesgo de las siguientes enfermedades: diabetes mellitus, partos pretérminos, neonatos bajo peso, infecciones respiratorias, entre otras. Se atribuye destacada importancia al vínculo con enfermedades derivadas de la ateroesclerosis como infartos cardíacos y cerebrales. Objetivo: determinar posible asociación entre enfermedad periodontal e infarto cerebral isquémico aterotrobótico. Materiales y métodos: entre octubre 2015 y marzo del 2016, se realizó un estudio transversal observacional, de casos y controles, en los Hospitales "Freyre de Andrade" y "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto". Se registraron factores de riesgo para el infarto cerebral isquémico aterotrobótico y el estado periodontal, según el indice periodontal de Russell. El grupo control se homologó respecto a los casos en una proporción de 1X1, según edad, sexo, color de la piel y al menos 1 factor de riesgo reconocido del infarto cerebral. Se respetaron principios y normativas bioéticas para investigaciones biomédicas. Se emplearon medidas de resumen para datos cualitativos (frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes). Resultados: fueron estudiados 44 pacientes, 22 casos y 22 controles, mayoritariamente de 71 o más años, masculinos y blancos. Predominaron los pacientes con enfermedad periodontal sobre los sanos periodontalmente, 88,6 % y 11,4 %; respectivamente. La periodontitis fue el estado que prevaleció. La hipertensión arterial fue el factor asociado al infarto cerebral isquémico aterotrobótico que se presentó con mayor frecuencia, 61,4 %. Conclusiones: en todos los grupos la enfermedad periodontal predominó respecto al resto de factores de riesgo explorados del infarto cerebral isquémico, lo que pudiera sugerir asociación entre ambas enfermedades (AU).

The relationship between periodontal disease and diseases caused by atherosclerosis such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction has been emphasized. Objective: to determine the possible association between periodontal disease and atherothrombotic ischemic cerebral infarction (AICI). Materials and Methods: in the period from October 2015 to March 2016, an observational, case-control, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Hospitals "Freyre de Andrade" and " Dr. Luis Díaz Soto". Risk factors were recorded for AICI and the periodontal state, according to the revised Periodontal Russell's Index. The control group was homologated for cases at a ratio of 1x1, based on age, sex, skin color and at least 1 recognized AICI risk factor. Bioethical principles and regulations for biomedical research were respected. Summary measures were used for qualitative data (absolute frequencies and percentages). Results: 44 patients were studied, 22 cases and 22 controls, most of them aged 71 or more years, male and white. Patients with periodontal disease predominated over the periodontally healthy ones (88, 6 % y 11, 4 % respectively). Periodontitis was the most prevalent condition. High blood pressure was the most frequent factor associated to AICI, 61.4 %. Conclusions: in all groups, periodontal disease prevailed over the rest of the explored AICI risk factors, what may suggest an association between both diseases (AU).

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Bidens odorata Cavanilles is a medicinal and edible plant known as "mozote blanco, aceitilla, acahual, mozoquelite" which is traditionally used in Mexico as a diuretic, hypoglycaemic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antitussive, to treat gastrointestinal disorders, kidney pain, and lung or respiratory diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY: This research study was aimed at phytochemical analysis of aerial extracts of B. odorata for antimycobacterial and lipid-lowering activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Compounds 1 (((2R, 3R, 4S, 5S, 6R)-3,4,5-Tryhidroxy-6-(((E)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) acryloyl) oxy) tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl) methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate) and 2 (3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid) were isolated from B. odorata aerial shoots and their structural elucidation was carried out using 1 and 2D NMR, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The antimycobacterial activity of various extracts and compounds 1 and 2 was determined using the Microplate Alamar Blue Assay (MABA). The evaluation of the hypolipidemic effect of the ethanolic extract and the glycosylated compound 1 was tested in a murine model of hypercholesterolemia induced by diet and by Triton WR-1339. On the other hand, the LD50 of the ethanolic extract was evaluated in ICR mice by the OECD protocol TG 423. RESULTS: Antimycobacterial assay of hexane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, ethanolic and aqueous extracts, as well as the new glycosidic compound 1 and benzoic acid derivative 2 isolated from B. odorata showed minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 100, 12.5, 12.5, 12.5, ≥200, 3.125 and 50 µg/mL, respectively, against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. Only hexane and CH2Cl2 extracts were observed to be active against Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2155 at a concentration of 50 and 100 µg/mL, respectively. The ethanolic extract showed lipid-lowering activity at doses of 100 and 1000 mg/kg, while glycosidic compound 1 was active at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg. In addition, the LD50 of the ethanolic extract was >2000 mg/kg, meaning that this extract does not cause lethality or adverse effects, and no signs of organs alterations or tissue damage were observed. CONCLUSION: The hexane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, and ethanolic extracts of B. odorata, as well as their components 1 and 2, displayed antimycobacterial activity against M. tuberculosis. Moreover, the ethanolic extract and glycosidic compound 1 showed an important lipid-lowering effect, without lethality or secondary effect. The results of this study support the documented traditional use for B. odorata.

OBJECTIVE: To determine and identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) of oral streptococci from active dental infections in adults and its association with age and gender. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 59 subjects from 18 to 62 years old. Ninety-eighth samples obtained from the subjects were cultivated in agar plates containing antibiotics amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (A-CA), clindamycin, and moxifloxacin (concentrations of 16, 32 or 64 µg/ml). PCR assay was performed to identify bacterial species. RESULTS: The bacterial species that showed more antibiotic-resistance (AR) was S. mutans (45.9%), followed by S. gordonii (21.6%), S. oralis (17.6%), S. sanguinis (9.5%), S. salivarius (5.4%) and S. sobrinus (0%). Moreover, clindamycin (59.4%) showed the highest frequency of AR. Moxifloxacin and A-CA showed an susceptibility >99.1%, while clindamycin showed the lowest efficacy (93.3%); there was a significant statistically difference (p < .01). The age group between 26 and 50 years old (32.2%) and females (28.8%) showed more multiresistance. Clindamycin showed a statistical difference (p < .05) when comparing groups by gender. CONCLUSIONS: Clindamycin was the antibiotic with the highest frequency of ARB and lower bactericidal effect. Moxifloxacin and A-CA showed the highest efficacy and the lowest ARB frequency. Streptococcus mutans was the bacterial specie that showed an increased frequency of AR.
