RESUMO

P2-Na0.67Mn0.67Ni0.33O2 is a promising cathode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to its low cost, high theoretical capacity, and non-toxicity. However, it still suffers from unsatisfactory cycling stability mainly incurred by the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn3+ and electrolyte decomposition on the electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, the P2-Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2@PPy (NNMO@PPy) composite applied as cathode materials for SIBs is obtained by introducing conductive polypyrrole (PPy) as coating layer on the P2-Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 (NNMO) microspheres. Numerous physical characterization methods indicate that the PPy layer was uniformly coated on the surface of NNMO microspheres without change in phase structure and morphology. The PPy coating layer can alleviate Mn dissolution and effectively suppress the side reactions between the electrolyte and electrode during cycling. The optimal NNMO@PPy-9 with 9 wt% PPy delivers a high capacity of 127.4 mAh/g at the current density at 150 mA g-1, an excellent cyclic stability with high capacity retention of 80.5 % after 300 cycles, and enhanced rate performance (169.3 mAh/g at 15 mA g-1 while 89.8 mAh/g at 600 mA g-1). Furthermore, hard carbon (-)//NNMO@PPy-9 (+) full cell delivers a high energy density of 305.1 Wh kg-1 and superior cycling stability with 88.2 % capacity retention after 150 cycles. In-situ X-ray diffraction experiment and electrochemical characterization verify the highly reversible structure evolution and robust P2-type phase structure of NNMO@PPy-9 for fast and stable Na+ diffusion. This effective strategy of using conductive PPy as a coating layer may provide a new insight to modify NNMO surface, improving the cycling stability and rate capability.

In this paper, we propose and study several inverse problems of identifying/determining unknown coefficients for a class of coupled PDE systems by measuring the average flux data on part of the underlying boundary. In these coupled systems, we mainly consider the non-negative solutions of the coupled equations, which are consistent with realistic settings in biology and ecology. There are several salient features of our inverse problem study: the drastic reduction of the measurement/observation data due to averaging effects, the nonlinear coupling of multiple equations, and the non-negative constraints on the solutions, which pose significant challenges to the inverse problems. We develop a new and effective scheme to tackle the inverse problems and achieve unique identifiability results by properly controlling the injection of different source terms to obtain multiple sets of mean flux data. The approach relies on certain monotonicity properties which are related to the intrinsic structures of the coupled PDE system. We also connect our study to biological applications of practical interest.

Solid-state sodium-ion batteries have attracted significant attention due to their rich resources, high safety, and high energy density. However, the lower ionic conductivity and inferior interfacial contact between solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and electrodes limit their practical applications. Herein, polyvinylideneuoride-co-hexauoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) membrane is selected and a novel sandwiched composite PVDF-HFP/Na2.5Zr1.95Ce0.05Si2.2P0.8O11.3F0.7/PVDF-HFP (G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G) SSEs is well designed. The ionic conductivity of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 is enhanced by Ce4+/F- co-doping. The effects of Ce4+ and F- doping on the crystal structure, density, and ionic conductivity for Na3Zr2Si2PO12 are well investigated. The optimal NZC0.05SPF0.7 delivers a high ionic conductivity of 1.39 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 â„ƒ. Moreover, the PVDF-HFP membrane can significantly enhance the interface compatibility between NZC0.05SPF0.7 and electrodes. The as-prepared G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G exhibits a large ionic conductivity of 1.07 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 â„ƒ, wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.5 V, high critical current density of 1.2 A cm-2, and stable Na plating/stripping over 600 h at 0.3 A cm-2. The solid-state Na0.67Mn0.47Ni0.33Ti0.2O2/G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G/Na battery delivers a remarkable cycling stability and rate capability at 25 â„ƒ, indicating that the as-prepared G-NZC0.05SPF0.7-G has a promising application for solid-state SIBs. This study demonstrates an effective strategy to develop advanced solid-state electrolytes for solid-state SIBs.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease associated with disturbed gut microbiota. Currently, the treatments and outcomes of AS are not satisfactory. It is reported that resveratrol (RES) is a major phytoalexin with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and some other pharmacological effects. However, there are no studies on the role of RES in AS. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of RES on AS. Proteoglycan and complete freund's adjuvant were used to conduct an AS mouse model, and then the AS mice were gavaged with RES (20 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) daily for 4 weeks. Subsequently, the effect of RES on AS mice was assessed by detecting disease severity, inflammatory cytokines, NLRP3 inflammasome, TLR4/NF-κB pathway, intestinal mucosal barrier function, intestinal microbial barrier function. The assessment results indicated that RES could significantly relieve progression and severity of AS, inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-17A, interferon-γ), and promote the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-4). RES intervention caused the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome and TLR4/NF-κB pathway. In terms of intestinal barrier function, experimental results found RES increased zonula occludens-1 and occludin expression, and additionally, changed the composition of the gut microbiota by increasing levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and reducing levels of Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli. Collectively, RES protects PG-induced AS mice by inhibiting inflammatory responses and TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway, restoring intestinal mucosal barrier function, and regulating the composition of the gut microbiota. In other words, RES is a potential candidate for the treatment of AS.

Stretchable hydrogel-based strain sensors suffer from limited sensitivity, which urgently requires further breakthroughs for precise and stable human-computer interaction. Here, an efficient microstructural engineering strategy is proposed to significantly enhance the sensitivity of hydrogel-based strain sensors by sandwiching an emulsion-polymerized polyacrylamide organohydrogel microsphere membrane between two Ecoflex films, which are accompanied by crack generation and propagation effects upon stretching. Consequently, the as-developed strain sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) of 1275), wide detection range (100% strain), low hysteresis, ultralow detection limit (0.05% strain), good fatigue resistance, and low fabrication cost. In addition, the sensor features good water, dehydration, and frost resistance, enabling real-time strain monitoring in various complex conditions due to the encapsulation of Ecoflex film and the addition of glycerol and KCl. Through further structural manipulation, the device achieves superior response to tiny strains, with a GF value of 98.3 in the strain range of less than 1.5%. Owing to the high strain sensing performance, the sensor is able to detect various human activities from swallowing to finger bending even under water. On this basis, a wireless sensing system with apnea warning and single-channel gesture recognition capabilities is successfully demonstrated, demonstrating its great promise as wearable electronics.

Background: Stroke is among the leading causes of disability of worldwide. Gait dysfunction is common in stroke survivors, and substantial advance is yet to be made in stroke rehabilitation practice to improve the clinical outcome of gait recovery. The role of the upper limb in gait recovery has been emphasized in the literature. Recent studies proposed that four limbs coordinated interventions, coined the term "interlimb-coordinated interventions," could promote gait function by increasing the neural coupling between the arms and legs. A high-quality review is essential to examine the clinical improvement and neurophysiological changes following interlimb-coordinated interventions in patients with stroke. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis will be conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The literature will be retrieved from the databases of OVID, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. Studies published in English over the past 15 years will be included. All of the clinical studies (e.g., randomized, pseudorandomized and non-randomized controlled trials, uncontrolled trials, and case series) that employed interlimb intervention and assessed gait function of patients with stroke will be included. Clinical functions of gait, balance, lower limb functions, and neurophysiologic changes are the outcome measures of interest. Statistical analyses will be performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3. Discussion: The findings of this study will provide insight into the clinical benefits and the neurophysiological adaptations of the nervous system induced by interlimb-coordinated intervention in patients with stroke. This would guide clinical decision-making and the future development of targeted neurorehabilitation protocol in stroke rehabilitation to improve gait and motor function in patients with stroke. Increasing neuroplasticity through four-limb intervention might complement therapeutic rehabilitation strategies in this patient group. The findings could also be insightful for other cerebral diseases.

Objective: Increased muscle co-contraction of the agonist and antagonist muscles during voluntary movement is commonly observed in the upper limbs of stroke survivors. Much remain to be understood about the underlying mechanism. The aim of the study is to investigate the correlation between increased muscle co-contraction and the function of the corticospinal tract (CST). Methods: Nine stroke survivors and nine age-matched healthy individuals were recruited. All the participants were instructed to perform isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and horizontal task which consist of sponge grasp, horizontal transportation, and sponge release. We recorded electromyography (EMG) activities from four muscle groups during the MVC test and horizontal task in the upper limbs of stroke survivors. The muscle groups consist of extensor digitorum (ED), flexor digitorum (FD), triceps brachii (TRI), and biceps brachii (BIC). The root mean square (RMS) of EMG was applied to assess the muscle activation during horizontal task. We adopted a co-contraction index (CI) to evaluate the degree of muscle co-contraction. CST function was evaluated by the motor-evoked potential (MEP) parameters, including resting motor threshold, amplitude, latency, and central motor conduction time. We employed correlation analysis to probe the association between CI and MEP parameters. Results: The RMS, CI, and MEP parameters on the affected side showed significant difference compared with the unaffected side of stroke survivors and the healthy group. The result of correlation analysis showed that CI was significantly correlated with MEP parameters in stroke survivors. Conclusion: There existed increased muscle co-contraction and impairment in CST functionality on the affected side of stroke survivors. The increased muscle co-contraction was correlated with the impairment of the CST. Intervention that could improve the excitability of the CST may contribute to the recovery of muscle discoordination in the upper limbs of stroke survivors.

Objectives: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a musculoskeletal disease that contributes to low back pain, sciatica, and movement disorder. Existing studies have suggested that the immune environment factors are the primary contributions to LDH. However, its etiology remains unknown. We sought to identify the potential diagnostic biomarkers and analyze the immune infiltration pattern in LDH. Methods: The whole-blood gene expression level profiles of GSE124272 and GSE150408 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, including that of 25 patients with LDH and 25 healthy volunteers. After merging the two microarray datasets, Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) were screened, and a functional correlation analysis was performed. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) logistic regression algorithm and support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) were applied to identify diagnostic biomarkers by a cross-validation method. Then, the GSE42611 dataset was used as a validation dataset to detect the expression level of these diagnostic biomarkers in the nucleus pulposus and evaluate their accuracy. The hub genes in the network were identified by the CIBERSORT tool and the Weighted Gene Coexpression Network Analysis (WGCNA). A Spearman correlation analysis between diagnostic markers and infiltrating immune cells was conducted to further illustrate the molecular immune mechanism of LDH. Results: The azurophil granule and the systemic lupus erythematosus pathway were significantly different between the healthy group and the LDH group after gene enrichment analysis. The XLOC_l2_012836, lnc-FGD3-1, and scavenger receptor class A member 5 were correlated with the immune cell infiltration in various degrees. In addition, five hub genes that correlated with LDH were identified, including AQP9, SIRPB2, SLC16A3, LILRB3, and HSPA6. Conclusion: The XLOC_l2_012836, lnc-FGD3-1, and SCARA5 might be adopted for the early diagnosis of LDH. The five identified hub genes might have similar pathological mechanisms that contribute to the degeneration of the lumbar disc. The identified hub genes and immune infiltrating pattern extend the knowledge on the potential functioning mechanisms, which offer guidance for the development of therapeutic targets of LDH.

Objectives: To investigate the proactive and reactive control process when executing a complex task in patients with stroke. Proactive control is the preparatory process before the target stimulus, whereas reactive control is an imperative resolution of interference after the target stimulus. Methods: In total, 17 patients with chronic stroke and 17 healthy individuals were recruited. The proactive and reactive control of executive function was assessed by the task-switching paradigm and the AX version of the Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT). The general executive function was assessed by Color Trial Test (CTT) and Stroop Test. The behavioral data of the task-switching paradigm were analyzed by a three-way repeated-measures ANOVA, and the AX-CPT data were analyzed by two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: For efficiency scores in the task-switching paradigm, trial (repeat vs. switch) × group (stroke or control group) interaction effect was significant. Post-hoc analysis on trial × group effect showed a significant between-trial difference in accuracy rates in the repeat trial in the control group regardless of 100 or 50% validity. For the AX-CPT, the main effects of condition and group on response time were statistically significant. The interaction effect of condition (AY or BX) × group (stroke or control group) was also significant. Post-hoc analysis for condition × group indicated that the stroke group had a significantly longer response time in the BX condition than the control group and longer completion time in CTT2 and larger word interference for completion time in the Stroop test than the control cohort. Conclusions: Post-stroke survivors showed deficits in the performance of proactive control but not in the performance of reactive control. Deficits in proactive control may be related to the impairment of working memory. Interventions that focus on proactive control may result in improved clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has gradually been in the limelight in recent years because of its great application potential for fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Therefore, significant issues are increasingly focused on developing effective and economical ORR electrocatalysts. This review begins with the reaction mechanisms and theoretical calculations of ORR in acidic and alkaline media. The latest reports and challenges in ORR electrocatalysis are traced. Most importantly, the latest advances in the development of ORR electrocatalysts are presented in detail, including platinum group metal (PGM), transition metal, and carbon-based electrocatalysts with various nanostructures. Furthermore, the development prospects and challenges of ORR electrocatalysts are speculated and discussed. These insights would help to formulate the design guidelines for highly-active ORR electrocatalysts and affect future research to obtain new knowledge for ORR mechanisms.

α-Fe2O3 fusiform nanorods were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method employing the mixture of FeCl3·6H2O and urea as raw materials. The samples were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-DRS). Its visible-light photocatalytic performances were evaluated by photocatalytic decolorization methylene blue (MB) in visible light irradiation. It was found that pure phase α-Fe2O3 nanorods with a length of about 125 nm and a diameter of 50 nm were successfully synthesized. The photocatalytic decolorization of MB results indicated that α-Fe2O3 nanorods showed higher photocatalytic activity than that of commercial Fe2O3 nanoparticles-these are attributed to its unique three-dimensional structure and lower electron-hole recombination rate.

The regulation of glucose metabolism is a research focus in cancer treatment. Glucose metabolism is essential for maintaining the growth and proliferation of tumor cells, thus offering us great opportunities for tumor treatment. Recently, much progress has been made in efficient cancer treatment by regulating the pathway of glucose metabolism with nanomedicines due to the rapid development of nanotechnology and promising drug targets. In this review, we first introduced the pathway of cell energy supply from the perspective of aerobic and anaerobic processes. Then, we discussed the recent research progress in regulating glucose metabolism for various tumor resistance strategies including heat resistance, multiple drug resistance, and hypoxia. Finally, we presented the prospects and challenges of developing multifunctional nanoagents for efficient chemotherapy, hyperthermia, dynamic therapy and so on by regulating glucose metabolism.

Thermal conductivity is required for developing high-power microwave technology. Diamond has the highest thermal conductivity in nature. In this study, a diamond film was synthesized by microwave plasma chemical deposition, and then long and short conductive graphite fibers were introduced to the diamond films by laser ablation. The permittivity of the samples in the K-band was measured using the transmission/reflection method. The permittivity of diamond films with short graphite fibers increased. The increase in real part of permittivity can be attributed to electron polarization, and the increase in the imaginary part can be ascribed to both polarization and electrical conductivity. The diamond films with long graphite fibers exhibited a highly pronounced anisotropy for microwave. The calculation of microwave absorption shows that reflection loss values exceeding -10 dB can be obtained in the frequency range of 21.3-23.5 GHz when the graphite fiber length is 0.7 mm and the sample thickness is 2.5 mm. Therefore, diamond films can be developed into a microwave attenuation material with extremely high thermal conductivity.

PURPOSE: To detect the responsiveness and predictive ability of the Chinese version Action Research Arm Test (C-ARAT) in participants within the first 3 months after cerebral infarction. METHODS: Ninety-seven individuals (75 men, mean age 59.87 ± 10.94 years) with a first cerebral infarction were enrolled in this study. The participants were evaluated by two outcome measures: C-ARAT and the Barthel Activities of Daily Living Index (BI) at five time points: 0D, 3W, 3M, 6M and 1Y after enrolment. The standardised response mean (SRM) and the Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to analyse responsiveness. Predictive validity was determined by using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. The predicted performance of C-ARAT on activities of daily living (ADLs) was measured by linear regression model. Floor and ceiling effects were estimated by counting the proportion of subjects falling outside the 5% lower or upper boundary, respectively. RESULTS: The C-ARAT showed moderate to large responsiveness in detecting changes over time (SRM = 0.58-0.84). The C-ARAT subscales showed small to large responsiveness (SRM = 0.44-0.90). The C-ARAT at 0D showed moderate to good correlation with the BI scores at 3W, 3M and 6M (ρ = 0.561-0.624, p < 0.001), and exhibited fair correlation with the BI score 1Y after enrolment (ρ = 0.384, p < 0.05). C-ARAT was a good predictor (adjusted R 2 = 0.185-0.249) of BI within 3M follow-up. The C-ARAT total score showed a notable floor effect at 0D and 3W and a notable ceiling effect at 3M, 6M and 1Y. CONCLUSION: The results of this study support the use of the C-ARAT as a measurement of upper extremity function in individuals with a first cerebral infarction.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to translate the English version of the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) into Chinese and to evaluate the initial validation of the Chinese version (C-ARAT) in patients with a first stroke. METHODS: An expert group translated the original ARAT from English into Chinese using a forward-backward procedure. Forty-four patients (36 men and 8 women) aged 22-80 years with a first stroke were enrolled in this study. The participants were evaluated using 3 stroke-specific outcome measures: C-ARAT, the upper extremity section of the Fugl-Meyer assessment (UE-FMA), and the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT). Internal consistency was analysed using Cronbach's α coefficients and item-scale correlations. Concurrent validity was determined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. Floor and ceiling effects were considered to be present when more than 20% of patients fell outside the preliminarily set lower or upper boundary, respectively. RESULTS: The C-ARAT items yielded excellent internal consistency, with a Cronbach's α of 0.98 (p < 0.001) and item-total correlations ranging from 0.727 to 0.948 (p < 0.001). The C-ARAT exhibited good-to-excellent correlations with the UE-FMA and WMFT functional ability (WMFT-FA) scores, with respective ρ values of 0.824 and 0.852 (p < 0.001), and an excellent negative correlation with the WMFT performance time (WMFT-time), with a ρ value of -0.940 (p < 0.001). The C-ARAT subscales generally exhibited good-to-excellent correlations with stroke-specific assessments, with ρ values ranging from 0.773 to 0.927 (p < 0.001). However, the gross subscale exhibited moderate-to-good correlations with the UE-FMA and WMFT-FA scores, with respective ρ values of 0.665 and 0.720 (p < 0.001). No significant floor effect was observed, and a significant ceiling effect was observed only on the WMFT-time. CONCLUSIONS: The C-ARAT demonstrated excellent internal consistency and good-to-excellent concurrent validity. This test could be used to evaluate upper extremity function in stroke patients without cognitive impairment.

Background: Stroke survivors may lack the cognitive ability to anticipate the required control for palmar grasp execution. The cortical mechanisms involved in motor anticipation of palmar grasp movement and its association with post-stroke hand function remains unknown. Aims: To investigate the cognitive anticipation process during a palmar grasp task in subacute stroke survivors and to compare with healthy individuals. The association between cortical excitability and hand function was also explored. Methods: Twenty-five participants with hemiparesis within 1-6 months after first unilateral stroke were recruited. Twenty-five matched healthy individuals were recruited as control. Contingent negative variation (CNV) was measured using electroencephalography recordings (EEG). Event related potentials were elicited by cue triggered hand movement paradigm. CNV onset time and amplitude between pre-cue and before movement execution were recorded. Results: The differences in CNV onset time and peak amplitude were statistically significant between the subacute stroke and control groups, with patients showing earlier onset time with increased amplitudes. However, there was no statistically significant difference in CNV onset time and peak amplitude between lesioned and non-lesioned hemisphere in the subacute stroke group. Low to moderate linear associations were observed between cortical excitability and hand function. Conclusions: The earlier CNV onset time and higher peak amplitude observed in the subacute stroke group suggest increased brain computational demand during palmar grasp task. The lack of difference in CNV amplitude between the lesioned and non-lesioned hemisphere within the subacute stroke group may suggest that the non-lesioned hemisphere plays a role in the motor anticipatory process. The moderate correlations suggested that hand function may be associated with cortical processing of motor anticipation.

This study was carried out to investigate the anti-carcinogenic effect of L-carnosine in human carcinoma cells (SNU-423). The SNU-423 cancer cells were cultured at a density of 2 × 104 cells/well in Dulbecco modified Eagle medium. After 24 h of adherence, the cells were treated with L-carnosine (0.2 and 1 mg/mL) for 48 h. Then, cell viability was assessed by sulforhodamine assay, while mitochondrial dysfunction was measured by fluorescence microscopy using chromatin-specific dye Hoechst 33258. Intracellular levels of ROS were assayed by fluorescence spectroscopy with 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA). L-Carnosine significantly inhibited the growth of the SNU-423 cells (p < 0.05). The inhibitory effect of L-carnosine was confirmed by results from mitochondrial fragmentation assay. The relative fluorescent unit was increased in a dose-dependent manner by L-carnosine, with values of 79.43, 186.87 and 400.89 for 0.6, 0.8 and 1 mg/mL of L-carnosine, respectively (p < 0.05). These results demonstrate that L-carnosine exerts anti-carcinogenic effects in human liver cancer cells.

The firefly Aquatica leii (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) is widely distributed in China. In this study, we sequenced and characterized the first complete mitochondrial genome of the firefly from the subfamily Luciolinae. The circular genome of 16,856 bp in length contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and a non-coding AT-rich region. Overall base composition of the genome is 42.28% A, 34.80% T, 13.91% C and 9.01% G, with an AT bias of 77.08%. All protein-coding genes start with an ATN codon, and terminate with the typical stop codon TAA, TAG or a single T. The non-coding AT-rich region is unusually long (2239 bp), containing six 113 bp tandem repeats and a microsatellite-like (TA)7 element. The genome sequence is useful for studying the evolution of sexual signaling and many ecological specializations in fireflies.

To our knowledge, studies concerning the prevalence and burden of primary headache in China are limited to specific regions without comparison of different districts. A survey in a different area with similar climate and culture may enhance our knowledge of the factors causing primary headache and the burden of headache. We conducted a 1 year survey on the prevalence and burden of primary headache in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi. Our study also evaluated the factors behind similarities and differences affecting prevalence in the two regions of study. The survey methodology, which was used in an Expanded Program on Immunization by the World Health Organization, was adopted to investigate the prevalence and burden of headache patients. Random samples of 372 local residents in Guangdong and 182 local residents in Guangxi aged 18-65 years were invited to a face-to-face interview. The education level and mean household income were higher in Guangdong (p<0.05). The 1 year prevalence of primary headache was 22.6% (84/372) in Guangdong and 41.2% (75/182) in Guangxi (p<0.001). The average financial burden of primary headache is 2.1% and 3.7% of the mean household income in Guangdong and Guangxi, respectively (p=0.001). The district with lower economic status had a higher prevalence of primary headache, and inevitably bears a heavier burden even with the same disease cost.

Analgesic overuse often happens to migraine patients, especially chronic migraineurs, and migraine has been demonstrated to be associated with white matter lesions (WMLs). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between medication overuse headache (MOH) and WMLs in chronic migraine (CM) patients. Subjects were enrolled and divided into three groups: healthy controls, CM without MOH (CMwoMOH), and CM with MOH (CM-MOH). Most of the CM patients used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as acute headache medications. All the participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging scans and images were obtained for WML evaluation with semiquantitative scales. One hundred and forty-one participants were included, 45 of them for controls, 38 for CMwoMOH, and 58 for CM-MOH. In women, CMwoMOH patients had a higher prevalence of high WML load compared with controls and CM-MOH patients. In men, however, all the study groups showed no differences in the prevalence of high WML load. CMwoMOH women had increased risks of high deep white matter lesion (DWML) load compared with controls, while they had no risks of high periventricular white matter lesion (PVWML) load. CM-MOH women had no risks of high DWML load, but they had reduced risks of high PVWML load. The association of CM-MOH with high WML load in women was not changed when compared with CMwoMOH. Age was independently associated with high WML load among women. These data suggest that MOH caused by NSAIDs is not a risk factor for WMLs. Rather, NSAID overuse probably protects MOH patients from WMLs through anti-inflammatory effects.
