RESUMO
O objetivo deste artigo foi fazer uma revisão de literatura a cerca das novas aplicações e descobertas sobre células-tronco de origem dental e suas características e aplicações na medicina e odontologia. Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, realizada na Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS), nas seguintes bases de dados: PubMed (Public Medline), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS). Os critérios de inclusão dos artigos foram: idiomas português e inglês acerca da temática citada acima e artigos na íntegra indexados no período de 2004 a 2014. Os descritores utilizados foram os seguintes: células-tronco, engenharia de tecidos, dentes. Os resultados mostram que células-tronco de origem dental representam uma nova abordagem em terapia regenerativa. Crescentes evidências demonstram que as células-tronco são encontradas principalmente em nichos e que certos tecidos contêm mais células-tronco do que outros. Entre estes tecidos, os tecidos dentais são considerados uma rica fonte de células-tronco mesenquimais, que são adequados para aplicações de engenharia de tecidos. Portanto, concluímos que os dentes são uma ótima fonte de células-tronco, devido a sua facilidade de obtenção, capacidade de diferenciação e ainda a possibilidade de realizar um implante autólogo
The aim of this article is to review the literature about the new applications and discoveries about dental origin stem cell and their characteristics and applications in medicine and dentistry. This is a literature review, carried out in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), the following databases: PubMed (Public Medline), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS). The inclusion criteria of the articles were: language Portuguese and English on the theme mentioned above and full articles indexed from 2004 to 2014. The keywords used were: Stem cells, Tissue engineering and Teeth. The results showed that the source of dental stem cells represent a new approach to regenerative therapy. Increasing evidence demonstrates that stem cells are found mainly in niches and certain tissues contain more stem cells than others. Among these tissues, dental tissues are considered a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells, which are suitable for tissue engineering applications. Therefore, we conclude that the teeth are a great source of stem cells, due to its ease of obtaining, differentiation capacity and the possibility to perform an autologous implant
