RESUMO

Cancer is a major global health challenge, being the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality after cardiovascular disease. The growing economic burden and profound psychosocial impact on patients and their families make it urgent to find innovative and effective anticancer solutions. For this reason, interest in using natural compounds to develop new cancer treatments has grown. In this respect, antofine, an alkaloid class found in Apocynaceae, Lauraceae, and Moraceae family plants, exhibits promising biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antifungal activities. Several molecular mechanisms have been identified underlying antofine anti-cancerous effects, including the inhibition of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and AKT/mTOR signaling pathways, epigenetic inhibition of protein synthesis, ribosomal targeting, induction of apoptosis, inhibition of DNA synthesis, and cell cycle arrest. This study discusses the molecular structure, sources, photochemistry, and anticancer properties of antofine in relation to its structure-activity relationship and molecular targets. Then, examine in vitro and in vivo studies and analyze the mechanisms of action underpinning antofine efficacy against cancer cells. This review also discusses multidrug resistance in human cancer and the potential of antofine in this context. Safety and toxicity concerns are also addressed as well as current challenges in antofine research, including the need for clinical trials and bioavailability optimization. This review aims to provide comprehensive information for more effective natural compound-based cancer treatments.

RESUMO

The standing pouch, a packaging material made of multiple layers of plastic and metal, presents a significant challenge for full recycling. Gasification shows promise as a method to recover aluminum from this type of waste and convert it into energy. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of gasification in treating aluminum-containing plastic packages, and recovering aluminum while identifying the optimal combinations of temperature and equivalence ratio (ER) to achieve the best outcomes. The study achieved a conversion rate of 43.06 wt% to 69.42 wt% of the original waste mass into syngas, with aluminum recovery rates ranging from 35.2 % to 65.3 %. Temperature and ER alterations affected the product distribution, aluminum recovery rate, and aluminum partitioning in the products. The results indicated that the combination of 700 °C, ER = 0.4 would provide the largest amount of syngas about 69.42 %, which is the main product of the gasification process, and therefore, this combination is the most optimal for syngas-yielding purposes. Under the reclaiming aluminum is more prioritized, the combination of 800 °C, ER = 0.6 would be the most optimal condition, the majority of Al in fuel was found in char and fly ash were 67.5 % and 4.81 %, respectively. The study focused on the partitioning of aluminum during the gasification process, which was observed to mainly exist in the form of Al2O3(s), with gaseous species including AlCl3(g), AlH(g), and Al2O(g) due to their medium volatility. As the ER increased, the amount of O2 also increased, leading to more Al2O3(s) formation. In conclusion, this research provides a foundation for further exploration of gasification as a means of energy conversion and metal recovery.

RESUMO

Lithium-sulfur batteries offer theoretical capacities of 800-1600 mAh g-1 of active material and are therefore one of the most promising new battery chemistries currently under intensive study. However, the low electronic conductivity of the sulfur and the discharge products imposes energy penalties during the discharge and charge steps. In addition, the reduction of sulfur during discharge forms soluble polysulfides, which will diffuse to, and react with, the lithium metal anode. To address these two challenges, copper nanowires were introduced into the composite cathode to improve the electronic conductivity of the cathode and to provide electrostatic anchoring points for the formed polysulfide anions. The addition of the conductive copper nanowires resulted in the in situ formation of copper sulfide, which was shown to decrease the resistivity of the SEI layer on the anode, as manifested by diminished lithium plating and stripping overpotentials. Higher copper loadings exacerbated the dissolution of the copper sulfide during deep discharge and increased the concentration of displaced capping ligands in the electrolyte. Both phenomena generate species that react at the lithium anode, resulting in a more resistive SEI layer.

RESUMO

Topologically protected magnon surface states are highly desirable as an ideal platform to engineer low-dissipation spintronics devices. However, theoretical prediction of topological magnons in strongly correlated materials proves to be challenging because the ab initio density functional theory calculations fail to reliably predict magnetic interactions in correlated materials. Here, we present a symmetry-based approach, which predicts topological magnons in magnetically ordered crystals, upon applying external perturbations such as magnetic/electric fields and/or mechanical strains. We apply this approach to carry out an efficient search for magnetic materials in the Bilbao Crystallographic Server, where, among 198 compounds with an over 300-K transition temperature, we identify 12 magnetic insulators that support room-temperature topological magnons. They feature Weyl magnons with surface magnon arcs and magnon axion insulators with either chiral surface or hinge magnon modes, offering a route to realize energy-efficient devices based on protected surface magnons.

RESUMO

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PCPPs) were recently recognized as emerging pollutants due to their potential for adverse health and environmental impacts. One potential route of exposure, atmospheric particulate matter (APM), for polar PPCP chemicals has to date received limited attention. This study screened for 190 polar PPCP chemicals in outdoor APM samples collected from two locations in Hanoi, Vietnam, and predictions of source and potential effects on human health are presented. Day and night, as well as dry and rainy seasonal samples, were taken, and samples screened by LC-TOF, using sequential window acquisition and all theoretical fragment ion spectra method. Eleven PPCP chemicals were detected above the LOD and in more than one sample. The ∑11PPCP chemicals ranged from 0.61 to 21.9 ng m-3 (median 2.07 ng m-3), with between 2 and 6 compounds identified in individual samples (median 4). The ∑11PPCP chemicals collected near a heavy traffic area was greater than that in a populated residential zone. Night concentrations were significantly greater than day in both dry and rainy seasons (p < 0.05). Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, benzophenone-3, acetaminophen, cotinine, and fluorescent brightener 71 were detected in > 50% of samples. These are typically found in sunscreens, cosmetics, antipyretics, tobacco, and dyes. The DIair, hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) for adults and children at sampling sites were estimated. The HQ for both adults and children were orders of magnitude less than the risk or were close to or whichever. APM does appear to be a potential additional secondary exposure source of PPCP chemicals to the environment and more work is needed to identify if sources are local or ubiquitous and if there is a greater health risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal metastases traditionally includes omentectomy, even in the absence of visible omental metastases. We sought to determine the rate of occult histologic omental metastasis (OHOM), evaluate morbidity with omentectomy, and examine the rate of omental recurrence among patients undergoing CRS-HIPEC. METHODS: All CRS-HIPEC procedures from August 2007 to August 2020 were included in this single-center, retrospective, cohort study. Procedures were divided into those that included greater omentectomy (OM) and those that did not (NOM). The incidence of OHOM was evaluated specifically among the OM group with a grossly normal omentum. Multivariate regression analyses were performed to evaluate return of bowel function, ileus, and morbidity in the OM and NOM groups. RESULTS: Among 683 CRS-HIPEC procedures, 578 (84.6%) included omentectomy and 105 (15.4%) did not. The OM group had higher operative time, blood loss, peritoneal cancer index, number of visceral resections, and length of stay. In the OM group, 72 (12.5%) patients had a grossly normal omentum, and 23 (31.9%) of these had OHOM. Risk-adjusted return of bowel function, ileus, and 60-day complications were no different in the OM and NOM groups. Among 43 patients with residual omentum, 24 (55.8%) recurred, including 9 (20.9%) with omental recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Histologically occult metastasis was present in one-third of patients undergoing omentectomy during CRS-HIPEC. Omentectomy did not increase the rate of overall morbidity, and one-fifth of patients with residual omentum later developed omental recurrence. Thus, omentectomy is warranted in the absence of gross metastases during CRS-HIPEC.

RESUMO

We describe here a method to decrease particle size of nanoparticles synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. Small nanoparticles or nanocapsules were obtained by generating an osmotic pressure to induce the diffusion of monomer molecules from the dispersed phase of a miniemulsion before polymerization to an upper oil layer. The size reduction is dependent on the difference in concentration of monomer in the dispersed phase and in the upper oil layer and on the solubility of the monomer in water. By labeling the emulsion droplets with a copolymer of stearyl methacrylate and a polymerizable dye, we demonstrated that the migration of the monomer to the upper hexadecane layer relied on molecular diffusion rather than diffusion of monomer droplets to the oil layer. Moreover, surface tension measurements confirmed that the emulsions were still in the miniemulsion regime and not in the microemulsion regime. The particle size can be tuned by controlling the duration during which the miniemulsion stayed in contact with the hexadecane layer, the interfacial area between the miniemulsion and the hexadecane layer and by the concentration of surfactant. Our method was applied to reduce the size of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles, nanocapsules of a copolymer of styrene and methyl methacrylic acid, and silica nanocapsules. This work demonstrated that a successful reduction of nanoparticle size in the miniemulsion process can be achieved without using excess amounts of surfactant. The method relies on building osmotic pressure in oil droplets dispersed in water which acts as semipermeable membrane.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) disproportionately affects children of Asian descent. San Diego is home to a large Vietnamese population but no previous study has addressed the outcome of KD in this group. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of Vietnamese patients seen at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego from 2001 to 2019. Non-Vietnamese Asian and non-Asian KD patients were matched (2:1) based on date of onset and age with Vietnamese patients. Demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic data were compared. Interviews with cardiologists at the Children's Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, explored local practices in the diagnosis and management of KD patients. KD publications in Vietnamese were translated and summarized. RESULTS: Of 978 KD patients for whom both parents had the same ethnicity, 20 were Vietnamese (2.1%), 168 (17%) were non-Vietnamese Asian, and 789 (81%) were non-Asian. Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese Asians had an earlier median day of diagnosis at day 6 (interquartile range [IQR] 5-6) and 5.5 (IQR 4-6.75), respectively, compared with non-Asians (day 7, IQR 5-8.75, P = 0.02). Prominent cervical lymphadenopathy at diagnosis was more common in both Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese Asians (20% and 40%, respectively) compared with non-Asians (12.5%, P = 0.01). Importantly, Vietnamese KD patients had a higher rate of coronary artery aneurysms (60% vs. 27.5%) compared to non-Asians (P = 0.024). Vietnamese literature review and structured interviews suggested a high incidence and severity of KD in Vietnamese children. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians should be aware that Vietnamese children may be disproportionately affected by KD and have worse coronary artery outcomes.

RESUMO

Investigations of the densities of chemicals and materials bring valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of matter and processes. Recently, advanced density-based methods have been developed with wide measurement ranges (i.e. 0-23 g cm-3), high resolutions (i.e. 10-6 g cm-3), compatibility with different types of samples and the requirement of extremely low volumes of sample (as low as a single cell). Certain methods, such as magnetic levitation, are inexpensive, portable and user-friendly. Advanced density-based methods are, therefore, beneficially used to obtain absolute density values, composition of mixtures, characteristics of binding events, and kinetics of chemical and biological processes. Herein, the principles and applications of magnetic levitation, acoustic levitation, electrodynamic balance, aqueous multiphase systems, and suspended microchannel resonators for materials science are discussed.

RESUMO

Initially, vanadium dioxide seems to be an ideal first-order phase transition case study due to its deceptively simple structure and composition, but upon closer inspection there are nuances to the driving mechanism of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) that are still unexplained. In this study, a local structure analysis across a bulk powder tungsten-substitution series is utilized to tease out the nuances of this first-order phase transition. A comparison of the average structure to the local structure using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and total scattering pair-distribution function methods, respectively, is discussed as well as comparison to bright field transmission electron microscopy imaging through a similar temperature-series as the local structure characterization. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure fitting of thin film data across the substitution-series is also presented and compared to bulk. Machine learning technique, non-negative matrix factorization, is applied to analyze the total scattering data. The bulk MIT is probed through magnetic susceptibility as well as differential scanning calorimetry. The findings indicate the local transition temperature ([Formula: see text]) is less than the average [Formula: see text] supporting the Peierls-Mott MIT mechanism, and demonstrate that in bulk powder and thin-films, increasing tungsten-substitution instigates local V-oxidation through the phase pathway VO[Formula: see text] V[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] V[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text].

RESUMO

Transition metal phosphorus trisulfide materials have received considerable research interest since the 1980-1990s as they exhibit promising energy conversion and storage properties. However, the mechanistic insights into Li-ion storage in these materials are poorly understood to date. Here, we explore the lithiation of NiPS3 material by employing in situ pair-distribution function analysis, Monte Carlo molecular dynamics calculations, and a series of ex situ characterizations. Our findings elucidate complex ion insertion and storage dynamics around a layered polyanionic compound, which undergoes intercalation and conversion reactions in a sequential manner. This study of NiPS3 material exemplifies the Li-ion storage mechanism in transition metal phosphorus sulfide materials and provides insights into the challenges associated with achieving reliable, high-energy phosphorus trisulfide systems.

RESUMO

Magnetic excitations in van der Waals (vdW) materials, especially in the two-dimensional (2D) limit, are an exciting research topic from both the fundamental and applied perspectives. Using temperature-dependent, magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we identify the hybridization of two-magnon excitations with two phonons in manganese phosphorus triselenide (MnPSe3), a magnetic vdW material that hosts in-plane antiferromagnetism. Results from first-principles calculations of the phonon and magnon spectra further support our identification. The Raman spectra's rich temperature dependence through the magnetic transition displays an avoided crossing behavior in the phonons' frequency and a concurrent decrease in their lifetimes. We construct a model based on the interaction between a discrete level and a continuum that reproduces these observations. Our results imply a strong hybridization between each phonon and a two-magnon continuum. This work demonstrates that the magnon-phonon interactions can be observed directly in Raman scattering and provides deep insight into these interactions in 2D magnetic materials.

RESUMO

The prevalence of food-borne bacteria in developing countries is less well understood than in developed countries. The ISO11290-1 isolation method is commonly used to study Listeria contamination in chicken; however, all isolates are identified as untargeted Bacillus cereus. This study aimed to determine the classification, antibiotic susceptibility, and virulence genes of B. cereus isolated from retail chickens in Vietnam. Bacterial isolation using the ISO11290-1 method yielded 12 strains of B. cereus from seven out of 60 chickens. For determining bacterial diversity, panC and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analyses were performed. PanC analysis showed that all seven strains belong to the phylogenetic group III, to which the highest risk of foodborne illnesses was associated. MLST analysis showed that most strains contained a ST205 complex; further, all strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline. Virulence genes were also investigated. ces, a cereulide-related gene, was detected in 50% of the isolated strains, followed by cytK, nheA, and hblA enterotoxins in 41.7%, 16.7%, and 25% of the strains, respectively. In conclusion, B. cereus may be erroneously detected when attempting to detect Listeria in food using the ISO11290-1 method. Further study of the prevalence of B. cereus in Vietnamese food is needed to improve food safety.

RESUMO

We describe here a method to synthesize ultrasmall nanocapsules with a diameter of 6 nm, exhibiting a well-defined core-shell morphology. Remarkably, the nanocapules are synthesized in a miniemulsion process without the need of large amounts of surfactant as commonly used in the microemulsion process. Ultrasmall nanocapsules with an oil core and a silica shell are formed by the concurrent processes of a sol-gel reaction and Ostwald ripening. Using solvents with different water solubilities and alkoxysilanes with different reactivities, we demonstrate that sizes of obtained nanocapsules depend on the ripening rate and alkoxysilane conversion rate. The method can be also used for encapsulating natural oils such as peppermint oil and limonene. This work shows that the Ostwald ripening phenomenon can be employed beneficially for the preparation of very small colloids.

RESUMO

Vietnam is a Southeast Asian developing country with rapidly increasing air pollution, especially in large cities. Over 350,000 chemicals and chemical mixtures are produced and used in Vietnam; however, the country has only implemented air quality standards for 44 substances, which are primarily focused on inorganic and volatile organic compounds. Although numerous pesticides are frequently applied across large cities in Vietnam, information on their concentrations in atmospheric particulate matter (APM) is limited. Therefore, to investigate their occurrence and health effects, 187 pesticides in APM were screened using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-quadrupole time of flight- Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Fragment Ion Spectra method (LC-QTOF-MS-SWATH). A total of 22 pesticides (16 fungicides and 6 herbicides) were quantified in the dry and rainy seasons. Among them, 19 substances were quantified in APM for the first time in Vietnam. Their median total concentrations in the dry season were higher than those in the rainy season, and the concentrations in the daytime were one-third of the night-time concentrations in both seasons. Their total levels ranged from 0.82 to 21.1 ng m-3 (median, 3.63 ng m-3), the detection frequencies of 9 pesticides were higher than 70%, and 7-14 pesticides were detected per sample (median, 10). Some of the detected pesticides were likely sourced from their prevalent use in amenity turf protection (e.g., in parks and public roads) and weed control (e.g., in gardens, floriculture, and agriculture). The total daily intake (DIair) values for adults, children, and infants were 8.17E-06, 2.06E-05, and 2.45E-05 mg kg-1 d-1, respectively, and the highest Hazard Quotients (HQs) were 4.81E-04, 1.22E-03, and 1.44E-03, respectively. All HQs and HIs of the pesticides were < 1 for all population groups (adults, children, and infants), indicating negligible exposure risks.

RESUMO

Phloem-limiting phytoplasmas are known to be causal agents of phyllody, which is recognized by the abnormal development of floral structures resulting in serious yield losses in sesame plants. Currently, identification of the various groups of phytoplasmas that cause sesame phyllody (SP) is conducted by nested PCR, RFLP, and multiplex real-time qPCR assays. However, these methods require intensive labor and are costly and time-consuming so can only be undertaken in well-equipped labs. Here, diagnostic loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based assays allowing rapid detection of specific groups of phytoplasmas within 30 min were developed based on detection of the 16S rRNA sequence of phytoplasmas. Universal 16S rRNA phytoplasma primers and seven primer sets of different 16Sr group phytoplasmas (16SrI, 16SrII, 16SrIII, 16SrIV, 16SrV, 16SrX, 16SrXI) and universal plant cytochrome oxidase (cox) gene primers were used to detect 16S rRNA group phytoplasma sequences and the cox gene in sesame plants. The LAMP assays were carried out using a real-time fluorometer with amplification plots and annealing curves visualized directly. Results demonstrated that the 16SrI and 16SrII group phytoplasmas were causal agents of sesame phyllody in Vietnam. LAMP-based assays for in-field detection of sesame phyllody-causing phytoplasmas revealed advantages and potential applicability in comparison with conventional approaches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first assessment of multiple phytoplasma infection associated with sesame phyllody disease in Vietnam using LAMP-based assays.

RESUMO

PCR-based molecular approaches including RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA), ISSR (inter-simple sequence repeat), and SRAP (sequence-related amplified polymorphism) are commonly used to analyze genetic diversity. The aims of this study are to analyze genetic diversity of M. oryzae isolates using PCR-based molecular approaches such as RAPD, ISSR, and SRAP and to develop SCAR marker linked to the pathogenicity of rice blast fungus. Twenty Magnaporthe oryzae isolates were collected mainly from the south of Vietnam and assessed for genetic variation by RAPD, ISSR, and SRAP methods. The comparison of those methods was conducted based on the number of polymorphic bands, percentage of polymorphism, PIC values, and phylogenetic analysis. Then, sequenced characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers were developed based on specific bands linked to fungal pathogenicity of rice blast fungus, M. oryzae. The results indicated that SRAP markers yielded the greatest number of polymorphic bands (174) and occupied 51.7% with polymorphism information content (PIC) value of 0.66. Additionally, the SRAP approach showed stability and high productivity compared with RAPD and ISSR. The SCAR marker developed from the SRAP method identified the presence of the avirulence AVR-pita1 gene involving fungal pathogenicity that can break down blast resistance in rice cultivars. The consistency of SCAR marker obtained in this study showed its efficiency in rapid in-field detection of fungal pathogenicity. SCAR marker developed from SRAP technique provides a useful tool for improving the efficiency of blast disease management in rice fields.

RESUMO

Air pollution is the most serious environmental issue in Vietnam, particularly in big cities. Air pollutants that are set as environmental standards are regularly monitored by the public institutions. Whereas, environmental data on organic micro-pollutants in atmospheric particulate matters (APMs) is limited, including PAHs and POPs. Although massive pesticides are used in big cities, their data in APMs in Vietnam is very scarce. In order to elucidate their occurrence in the ambient air in Hanoi and their health effects, we surveyed 107 insecticides in APMs by a novel target screening method using LC-QTOF-MS-SWATH. A total of 19 insecticides were detected in the dry and the rainy seasons. Among them, 16 substances are, to our knowledge, reported for the first time in the literature. Their total concentrations varied from 0.47 to 27.0 ng m-3 (median, 3.6 ng m-3), detection frequencies of 12 compounds are higher than 42%, and the number of insecticides detected per each sample ranging from 5 to 13 (median, 9). Total concentrations in the dry season were generally higher than in the rainy season, and concentrations at night were higher than daytime in both seasons. The level of insecticides depends not only on the season, but also on its physicochemical properties, its application conditions, and the meteorological conditions. Their emission sources could be related to agricultural usage, floricultural activities, and pest control in houses. The total maximum daily intake (DIair) through inhalation for adults and children were 2.39E-05 mg kg-1 d-1 and 2.98E-05 mg kg-1 d-1, respectively. The highest Hazard Quotients (HQs) were 1.34E-03 and 3.37E-03, and the highest Hazard Indices (HIs) were 2.71E-03 and 6.33E-03 for adults and children, respectively. All values of HQs, and HIs of insecticides were less than 1, indicating that health risk would be negligible.
