BACKGROUND: Nurses often experience compassion fatigue as a result of exposure to chronic work-related stress. It is thought that nurses' mindfulness levels and patience attitudes might be effective on compassion fatigue. AIM: Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to examine the relationship between nurses' compassion fatigue, mindfulness levels and patience levels. METHODS: The study was carried out in a descriptive and relation-seeking type and was completed with the participation of 469 nurses. Data Form of Demographic and Professional Characteristics, Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and The Patience Scale were used as data collection tools. FINDINGS: As a result of the research, it was determined that there was a relationship between the mindfulness and patience levels of nurses and compassion fatigue. As the mindfulness and patience levels of nurses increase, compassion fatigue decreases (p < 0.05). As the mindfulness levels of the nurses increase, their patience levels increase as well (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Accordingly, it is recommended to increase the level of patience and reduce compassion fatigue by applying interventions that will increase the mindfulness levels of nurses.

BACKGROUND: The debriefing phase is the simulation phase where performance improves and learning occurs. This study examined the effects of the learning conversation (LC)-based, 3D (defusing, discovering and deepening) model-based and unstructured debriefing methods on satisfaction and debriefing experience after in-situ simulation among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. METHODS: In this randomized controlled experimental study, three debriefing methods were compared, according to which 119 ICU nurses were divided into the following groups: LC group (n = 38), 3D group (n = 40) and control group (n = 41). In- situ simulation was performed with an intensive care patient scenario. p < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The total Debriefing Experience Scale-Experience with Debriefing part scores were 89.76 ± 8.10 in the LC group, 88.90 ± 8.70 in the 3D group and 88.29 ± 7.28 in the control group. No significant difference was found in debriefing experience and satisfaction between the groups (p > .05), but a significant difference was observed in the LC group. The groups showed a homogeneous distribution regarding participant characteristics. CONCLUSION: Debriefing experience and satisfaction do not differ between the methods. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Implementation of the simulation in the ICU in - situ with ICU nurses is beneficial in obtaining a fidelity experience. Performing the debriefing application after simulation in line with the model supports the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) debriefing standards.

BACKGROUND: Ethical decision-making education in nursing can be taught effectively by combining different teaching models that support the visualisation of taught concepts and integrating theory into practice. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to examine the effect of flipped and jigsaw learning models on ethical decision-making and ethical sensitivity in nursing. RESEARCH DESIGN: We used a nested mixed design. A pretest-posttest single-group quasi-experimental design was used in the quantitative part, and a case study method was used in the qualitative part. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: This study was conducted in fall semester with second-year nursing students who studied an ethics course for the first time, using two different collaborative learning models. In the quantitative part, ethical dilemma and ethical sensitivity scales were made as pre-test with 117 and post-test with 128 students. In the qualitative part, a semi-structured three focus group interviews was conducted with 16 students. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: After obtaining the approval of the University's ethics committee, the study was carried out after obtaining participants' informed written and verbal consent. FINDINGS: Students' perspectives changed positively after training. This was related to six cases in section A of the Ethical Dilemma Scale. In part B, Practical Consideration (PC) and Principled Thinking (PT) mean scores were similar, showing no significant difference. For Familiarity in section C, it was determined that 68.4% of students in the pre-test and 77.3% in the post-test were familiar with similar dilemmas. The ethical sensitivity scale's total scores were in a similar range. In the qualitative stage, ethical decision-making, ethical sensitivity, ethical dilemma and the improvement process were obtained as a theme. CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in the level of ethical sensitivity and familiarity with ethical dilemmas of nursing students after education. Flipped and jigsaw learning models can be used for nursing ethics courses.

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the analgesia nociception index (ANI) device and pain scales used in the postoperative pain assessment of pediatric patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. DESIGN: The study was designed as a correlation observational pilot study. METHODS: Postoperative pain was evaluated using pediatric pain scales (face, legs, arms, cry, consolability scale; numerical rating scale; Wong-Baker scale) and ANI device in school-aged children and adolescents. RESULTS: The mean age of the children was 14.00 ± 1.63 years, and the mean BMI was 22.52. We found a statistically significant positive correlation between the pain scale scores and a statistically significant negative relationship between the pain scale score and the ANI. CONCLUSIONS: The ANI device can be used safely and constantly for the objective assessment of postoperative pain in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Throughout and following the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, there is an urgent need to focus on organizational support strategies aimed at improving the resilience of nurses. PURPOSE: This research aims to examine the relationship between the nurses' perceived organizational support and their resilience levels, and to reveal the characteristics that make a significant difference. METHODS: The data of this descriptive and cross-sectional study were collected from 722 nurses in February 2021 using the web-based survey method. The study followed the STROBE guideline. The data collection tools included the Introductory Information Form, the Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, and the Psychological Resilience Scale. RESULTS: Nurses were concluded to have perceived a moderate level of organizational support and their psychological resilience were found to be higher than average. A positive relationship was determined between the organizational support perceived by nurses and their psychological resilience. The gender, position/title of nurses, their work experience in COVID-19 treatment services, and having been infected with the COVID-19 virus were found to affect their perception of organizational support and resilience. CONCLUSION: Organizational support perceived by nurses significantly affects their resilience. Resilience programs should, in particular, prioritize permanent clinical nurses who are in the risk group in terms of resilience, female nurses, nurses who had been infected with the COVID 19 virus, and nurses who have been assigned to COVID-19 treatment wards.

PURPOSE: The aim is to examine self-regulated learning and self-efficacy levels of nursing students, the relationship between them, and to reveal the variables that make a significant difference. DESIGN AND METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 417 nursing students. The data were collected using the Self-Regulated Learning Scale in Clinical Nursing Practice and Self-Efficacy Scale. FINDINGS: Nursing students have high self-regulated learning (60.28 ± 11.47) and moderate self-efficacy (62.72 ± 11.04) scores, and there is a weak positive and significant relationship between them (r = 0.349, p < 0.001). Students' gender, grade, and self-confidence in practice made a significant difference in the scores (p < 0.05). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Developing the self-regulated learning levels of nursing students can help increase the clinical practice performance of students by affecting their self-efficacy levels.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a reliable scale that can measure the attitudes of individuals using oral anticoagulant drugs (OACs). Methods: This methodological study was conducted with 296 followed-up individuals using OACs for at least 6 months and visiting the cardiology and neurology clinics of a hospital in Turkey during 2017. A 20-item pool was used to construct the scale and all items were found suitable after content validity analysis and preliminary testing. Construct validity was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Results: The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value of the scale (0.79) and results of Bartlett's test showed that the sample size was suitable for factor analysis (p less than 0.001). The total Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.83. Factor analysis to assess construct-content validity of the scale identified 4 factors (variance, 54%). Using a path diagram in CFA, Chi-square/df ratio values was calculated at 2.807, standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) at 0.093, comparative fit index (CFI) at 0.879, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) at 0.078.  Conclusions: We found that the OACAs we developed had high reliability and validity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between burnout, self-esteem and quality of life among nurses. STUDY DESIGN: Analytical, cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Sakarya Training and Research Hospital, Turkey, in 2013. METHODOLOGY: The sample was made-up of 131 volunteering nurses after obtainnig informed written consent from the participants, ethical committee, and corresponding institutions. Data were collected by personal information form (21 questions), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-22 items), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES-10 items), Professional Quality Of Life Scale(ProQOL-30 items). RESULTS: The scales were analysed in terms of internal consistency. Cronbach Alpha coefficients were determined as reliable for our sample. MBI 3 subscale total scores of the participant nurses were low for emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, high for personal accomplishment. Total score from RSES was 15.32 ±3.70. Total scores from 3 subscales of ProQOL were 29.78 ±9.02 for compassion satisfaction, 24.65 ±5.75 for burnout, and 15.12 ±6.54 for compassion fatigue. CONCLUSION: In this study, it was detected that burnout in nurses affected compassion satisfaction and individual success negatively.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine the anxiety level of pregnant women in labor. Methods: This study is a methodological research for developing an Anxiety Assessment Scale for Pregnant Women in Labor (AASPWL) and descriptive research for determining the anxiety level of pregnant women in labor. This study included a total of 269 pregnant women from the delivery room of a training and research hospital between November 2016 and July 2017. The study consists of 2 stages: the first stage includes scale content, construct validity, and reliability; the second stage involves examination of the relationship and effects by establishing a model with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). RESULTS: Construct validity was established using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Cronbach's alpha value was calculated to be 0.77 for the reliability of the developed AASPWL. Conclusion: The AASPWL is a reliable and valid scale that can be used to assess the anxiety level of women in labor.

BACKGROUND: It is stated in the literature that a mother's breast milk is sufficient for more than one baby. OBJECTIVES: This descriptive study aimed to determine whether twin babies are breastfed during their first six months of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied the twin birth cases in a state hospital in Sakarya, Turkey between October 2011 and March 2013. The population of the study consisted of entire mothers who had delivered twins in the maternity ward of the hospital. The sample comprised 30 twins' mothers who agreed to participate in the study via telephone for six months. During these phone calls, they were asked how they preferred to feed their babies. The data were expressed as the mean and percentage. RESULTS: The average age of the mothers participating in the study was 30.17±5.16 years (min. 19; max. 38). The number of mothers who stated that they had no previous experience of breastfeeding twin babies and had received training to breastfeed multiple babies was 17 (56.7%). Twenty-seven (90%) of the mothers had had caesarean sections, and half of the babies were preterm. Only a few of the babies were fed breast milk for five months. During the following months, the breastfeeding regimen was as follows: 5 babies were breastfed for a month, 5 babies for 2 months, 4 babies for 3 months, 4 babies for 4 months, 2 babies for 5 months, and no babies in the sixth month. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the number of twin babies who were only breastfed in the first six months of life was low. According to the literature, a mother's breast milk is sufficient for multiple babies. Mothers expecting twin babies should be informed about the benefits of breastfeeding and be encouraged to breastfeed. They should also receive training on this subject.
