RESUMO

Ferroelectric domain boundaries are quasi-two-dimensional functional interfaces with high prospects for nanoelectronic applications. Despite their reduced dimensionality, they can exhibit complex non-Ising polarization configurations and unexpected physical properties. Here, the impact of the three-dimensional (3D) curvature on the polarization profile of nominally uncharged 180° domain walls in LiNbO3 is studied using second-harmonic generation microscopy and 3D polarimetry analysis. Correlations between the domain-wall curvature and the variation of its internal polarization unfold in the form of modulations of the Néel-like character, which we attribute to the flexoelectric effect. While the Néel-like character originates mainly from the tilting of the domain wall, the internal polarization adjusts its orientation due to the synergetic upshot of dipolar and monopolar bound charges and their variation with the 3D curvature. Our results show that curved interfaces in solid crystals may offer a rich playground for tailoring nanoscale polar states.

RESUMO

One of the most characterized bioluminescent reactions involves the firefly luciferase that catalyzes the oxidation of the luciferin producing oxyluciferin in its first excited state. While relaxing to the ground state, oxyluciferin emits visible light with an emission maximum that can vary from green to red. Oxyluciferin exists under six different chemical forms resulting from a keto/enol tautomerization and the deprotonation of the phenol or enol moieties. The optical properties of each chemical form have been recently characterized by the investigations of a variety of oxyluciferin derivatives, indicating unresolved excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions. In this work, femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy are used to investigate the picosecond kinetics of the ESPT reactions and demonstrate the excited state keto to enol conversion of oxyluciferin and its derivatives in aqueous buffer as a function of pH. A comprehensive photophysical scheme is provided describing the complex luminescence pathways of oxyluciferin in protic solution.

RESUMO

A long focal length focusing device is proposed for the process of glass welding by femtosecond laser pulses at high repetition rate and we report on the significant advantages. The study is performed using a 100 mm focusing length F-theta lens. The results are compared to those obtained with a high numerical aperture microscope objective. The long focal length with the associated Rayleigh length method allows a robust high process speed: welding at 1000 mm/s has been achieved, several orders of magnitude larger compared to what was reported until now. Moreover, for one pulse, the same energy on a larger laser spot leads to a lower thermic gradient increase. As a result, with the proposed parameters, the heat accumulation process reduces the residual stress in the welding seams, preventing the formation of fractures inside the seams: mechanical resistance at 30 MPa has been measured.

We report an extensive study on the coordination behavior of chiral ditopic bridging ligands, which lead to metallosupramolecular polymers in the presence of Zn(II) and Cu(II) in solution. With the help of UV-vis and circular dichroism spectroscopies, we show that the metallopolymer sequence can be controlled by chirality and by the choice of the metal ion. Although the formation of a block metallopolymer proceeds through the assembly of homoleptic complexes, an alternate metallopolymer may be obtained only when heteroleptic complexes are formed. This demonstrates how the prevalent coordination geometries at metal centers may be used to control the sequences of the metallopolymers.

Firefly bioluminescence is a quite efficient process largely used for numerous applications. However, some fundamental photochemical properties of the light emitter are still to be analyzed. Indeed, the light emitter, oxyluciferin, can be in six different forms due to interexchange reactions. In this work, we present the simulation of the absorption and emission spectra of the possible natural oxyluciferin forms in water and some of their analogues considering both the solvent/oxyluciferin interactions and the dynamical effects by using MD simulations and QM/MM methods. On the one hand, the absorption band shapes have been rationalized by analyzing the electronic nature of the transitions involved. On the other hand, the simulated and experimental emission spectra have been compared. In this case, an ultrafast excited state proton transfer (ESPT) occurs in oxyluciferin and its analogues, which impairs the detection of the emission from the protonated state by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Transient absorption spectroscopy was used to evidence this ultrafast ESPT and rationalize the comparison between simulated and experimental steady-state emission spectra. Finally, this work shows the suitability of the studied oxyluciferin analogues to mimic the corresponding natural forms in water solution, as an elegant way to block the desired interexchange reactions allowing the study of each oxyluciferin form separately.

The synthesis of a series of push-pull derivatives bearing triphenylamine electron-donating group, cyclopenta[c]thiophen-4,6-dione electron acceptor and various π-linkers including (hetero)aromatic fragments is reported. All target chromophores with systematically varied π-linker structure were further investigated by electrochemistry, absorption measurements, and EFISH experiments in conjunction with DFT calculations. Based on electrochemical and photophysical measurements, when a polarizable 2,5-thienylene moiety is embedded into the chromophore π-backbone the highest intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is observed. Benzene, pyrimidine, and pyridazine derivatives exhibit lower polarizability and extent of the ICT across these π-linkers. The elongation of the π-conjugated system via additional ethenylene linker results in a significant reduction of the HOMO-LUMO gap and an enhancement of the NLO response. Whereas it does not significantly influence electrochemical and linear optical properties, the orientation of the pyrimidine ring seems to be a key parameter on the µß value due to significant variation of the dipolar moment (µ) value. In 2a and 2c, pyrimidine is oriented to behave as an acceptor and thus generate dipolar molecule with µ above 5 D, whereas in 2b and 2d ground state dipole moment is significantly reduced. This study seems to indicate a high aromaticity of pyrimidine and pyridazine derivatives, close to the benzene analogues and significantly higher than thiophene analogues.

The properties of ferroelectric domain walls can significantly differ from those of their parent material. Elucidating their internal structure is essential for the design of advanced devices exploiting nanoscale ferroicity and such localized functional properties. Here, we probe the internal structure of 180° ferroelectric domain walls in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films and lithium tantalate bulk crystals by means of second-harmonic generation microscopy. In both systems, we detect a pronounced second-harmonic signal at the walls. Local polarimetry analysis of this signal combined with numerical modelling reveals the existence of a planar polarization within the walls, with Néel and Bloch-like configurations in PZT and lithium tantalate, respectively. Moreover, we find domain wall chirality reversal at line defects crossing lithium tantalate crystals. Our results demonstrate a clear deviation from the ideal Ising configuration that is traditionally expected in uniaxial ferroelectrics, corroborating recent theoretical predictions of a more complex, often chiral structure.

We present experimental and theoretical study of the interaction of Light Induced Self-Written (LISW) waveguides in photopolymers. We show that the diffusion of the monomer controls the refractive index distribution. Consequently it influences the interaction between the LISW channels allowing the observation of anti-crossing behavior or the propagation of an array of non interacting LISW waveguides.

RESUMO

We report on the demonstration of liquid organic dye lasers based on 9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole (EHCz), so-called liquid carbazole, doped with green- and red-emitting laser dyes. Both waveguide and Fabry-Perot type microcavity fluidic organic dye lasers were prepared by capillary action under solvent-free conditions. Cascade Förster-type energy transfer processes from liquid carbazole to laser dyes were employed to achieve color-variable amplified spontaneous emission and lasing. Overall, this study provides the first step towards the development of solvent-free fluidic organic semiconducting lasers and demonstrates a new kind of optoelectronic applications for liquid organic semiconductors.

We have performed multi-photon image reconstructions as well as polarization state analyses inside an artery wall affected by atherosclerosis to investigate the changes in collagen structure. Mice, either healthy or affected by spontaneous atherosclerosis, have been used for this purpose. A two-photon imaging system has been used to investigate atherosclerotic lesions in the ascending aorta of mice. Second harmonic imaging has been performed alternatively on healthy samples and on affected region. The reconstructed images show that the spatial distribution of the collagen network seems disorganized by the disease. The polarization state studies reveal however that the apparent disorganization of the collagen is related to its spatially diffuse distribution and that the internal structure of the collagen fibers is not affected by the disease. In addition, a theoretical simulation of the second harmonic polarization states shows that they are consistent with the known 3D structure of the collagen network.

RESUMO

The inscription of light-induced self-written waveguides (LISW) with multimode optical fibers cannot be achieved by using coherent light because of the filamentation phenomena coming from the interferences among the different propagating modes. To suppress this filamentation, we have used two distinct strategies, an incoherent light writing technique and an "on the flow" writing process, to demonstrate the buildup of 1.5 mm long multimode LISWs.

RESUMO

We perform time-resolved broadband transmission ellipsometry using the ultrafast pump-probe technique in an original setup. Our setup allows us to measure, over a wide spectral range, the optical rotary dispersion of the sample or, when needed, its circular dichroism by adding a broadband quarter-wave plate. While our experiment has been designed to study the transient states in chiral molecules, it performs sufficiently well to also characterize the ground state.

We report on the creation of micro-patterns in an oriented nematic elastomer (an artificial muscle material) by photopolymerization of surface aligned nematic liquid crystal monomers. We demonstrate that microscopic techniques are able to create accurate patterns in rubber-like liquid crystal materials. Two approaches, based on one and two-photon excitations respectively, are implemented using a microscope-based setup. Due to its high spatial selectivity, the two-photon excitation mode yields finer patterns. Benefitting from the intrinsic, thermally-induced, contractile properties of the material, gratings with variable steps in response to temperature changes were fabricated.

RESUMO

We report experimental and theoretical investigations of multiple laser-line emission in a distributed-feedback dye laser pumped by two coherent optical beams. We have used a Lloyd interferometer configuration with second- and third-order Bragg reflections to study the interaction between the two incident pumps in an organic thin film. We demonstrated theoretically that the number of laser emission lines can be interpreted with reference to the saturation effect in the refractive index.

We propose to encode optical information through the localized depoling of polar chromophores in thin films of grafted polymeric materials with a femtosecond near IR laser source. This disorientation is promoted through the photoisomerization of the azo-dye component induced by a twophoton absorption process. We show that the resulting localized loss in second harmonic generation efficiency can be exploited in data storage applications. The low irradiation powers used allow for a recycling by reheating and repoling the films leading to a rewritable system.

We report on transient laser action during the photopolymerization process in organic thin films of acrylate monomers doped with a laser dye. The emission spectrum was monitored over a period of time in the direction orthogonal to the incident laser beam which is kept at a constant intensity during the experiments. The emission spectra display the signature of laser action after a certain amount of polymerization. We have also recorded the intensity of fluorescence as well as of the amplified stimulated emission (ASE) using a photodiode. Our results confirmed that all the emission is guided by an increase of the refractive index resulting from the photopolymerization process. The spatial fluctuations in the density of the material are thought to act as micro-cavities leading to a random laser effect.

We investigated the condition of unique self-written channel and multichannel propagation inside bulk photopolymerizable materials. Light was introduced in the medium by a single-mode optical fiber. At a very low beam power of 5 muW , a unique uniform-channel waveguide without any broadening was obtained by polymerization. When the input power is increased to 100 muW , the guide becomes chaotic and multichannel. We connected two fibers separated by a 1-cm distance. The results open the door to studies of the optical and electro-optical properties of photopolymerized guides doped by nonlinear optical chromophores and to possible applications in integrated optical devices.
