RESUMO

Mentoring is a way to foster personal and professional career development within professional disciplines such as nursing. The National League for Nursing has described the nurse faculty role as multidimensional and difficult to balance. A school of nursing implemented a faculty mentorship program focused on the school's core values: caring, professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence (CPRIDE). This program combines traditional and nontraditional mentoring models to create an environment in which junior faculty form relationships with senior faculty who possess expertise in a particular field.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to review relevant literature on ageism among health care providers and assess interventions used to improve their attitudes toward older adults. Literature published between 1983 and 2011 was reviewed using the keywords attitudes, older adults, nursing, and nursing students using CINAHL, MEDLINE, and the Education Resources Information Center. Previous relevant research is discussed and includes studies categorized according to health care provider populations: (a) nurses, (b) nursing students, (c) medical students, and (d) direct care workers. Studies in nursing and medical professions that highlight ageism have been conducted; however, there is a gap in the literature concerning ageism among direct care workers. This often neglected, yet critical population of health care providers is essential to the care of older adults; recommendations regarding their training and mentoring are emphasized.

RESUMO

Child abuse and violence are significant public health problems. Research indicates a strong correlation between early childhood abuse and enduring neurobiological changes in specific regions of the brain. These neurobiological changes are often reflected in psychopathology and lifelong maladaptive behaviors. However, emerging research suggests that these neurobiological changes may be modified through specific evidence-based interventions. Nurses must be able to evaluate the current research and translate the findings into their practice, remembering that prevention is the most effective remedy for abuse and violence.

RESUMO

This study examined what the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education identifies as a college of nursing's internal and external "community of interest." Using "appreciative inquiry" in this study of a college campus, we examined the parts of the historical past that the community believed should be maintained, its vision of excellence for the college, the ways in which the vision could be realized, and its part in fulfilling the expectations of a shared, co-created vision. Investigators collected data using a self-developed, one-on-one interview and focus-group format and analyzed the data using content analysis. The findings suggest that the community shared values of preserving the college's past and of its vision for the college's future. However, it differed in the means of putting its co-created vision into practice and in defining its contributions in realizing the vision it created for the college.
