RESUMO

Collapsin Response Mediator Protein (CRMP)-2 is involved in T-cell polarization and migration. To address the role of CRMP2 in neuroinflammation, we analyzed its involvement in lymphocyte recruitment to the central nervous system in mouse infected with neurotropic and non-neurotropic virus strains (RABV, CDV). A sub-population of early-activated CD69+CD3+ T lymphocytes highly expressing CRMP2 (CRMP2hi) peaked in the blood, lymph nodes and brain of mice infected with neurotropic viruses, and correlated with severity of disease. They displayed high migratory properties reduced by CRMP2 blocking antibody. These data point out the potential use of CRMP2 as a peripheral indicator of neuroinflammation.

RESUMO

Risk factors associated with blood lead levels exceeding 15 microg/dl were analyzed in this report. This relatively high lead level was selected because, at the time the study commenced, it was considered to be a "safe" level. A total of 1583 schoolchildren were studied. The students were from (a) two areas in Mexico City (Tlalnepantla and Xalostoc) that have had historically high concentrations of lead in air, and (b) three areas (Pedregal, Iztalpalapa, and Centro) with less impressive air lead levels. Parents were presented with a questionnaire that solicited information about lead risk factors. A bivariate analysis and a multilogistic analysis were conducted to identify associations and to identify the model that most accurately explains the variability of the sample. High blood lead concentrations were found in children who lived in Xalostoc and Tlalnepantla (16.1 and 17.0 microg/dl, respectively), and the lowest concentration (i.e., 10 microg/dl) was found in children from Iztapalapa. The strongest association was with area of residence, followed by education level of parents, cooking of meals in glazed pottery, and chewing or sucking of yellow or other colored pencils. A child's area of residence is the most significant risk factor that must be accounted for when any study of lead and blood lead concentrations is undertaken. Follow-up in similar populations should assist greatly in the evaluation of the impact of governmental actions on public health.

RESUMO

Nine patients (five males, four females) with 14 hydatid cysts were treated with albendazole and percutaneous drainage under sonographic guidance. All but two cysts were hepatic. The average cyst diameter was 81.5 mm (range: 42-180 mm). There were eight type 1 cysts, two type 2, three type 3, and a single type 4. Type 1 and 2 cysts were treated by needle aspiration, type 3 and 4 by needle decompression and catheter drainage. The residual cavity was irrigated with 30% hypertonic saline and injected with absolute alcohol. Biliary fistulization contraindicated alcohol use. All cysts were successfully treated. A single episode of reversible anaphylaxis was encountered. Serial sonographic examinations revealed residual cavities ranging from 10 to 35 mm in diameter. No new cysts were noted during an average follow-up of 9.6 months. The mean hospital stay was 48 hr. Percutaneous drainage of hydatid cysts is a relatively safe and cost-effective procedure.
