Introduction. Physical activity can provide long-term benefits for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Objective. This study sought to demonstrate the effects of progressive resistance training on the muscular strength, bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition of pre-menopausal women with SLE undergoing glucocorticoid (GC) treatment. Materials and Methods. This is the case report of a 43-year-old African-South American premenopausal woman with non-extensive SLE and low bone density. A six-month program with three bimonthly cycles of 70%, 80%, and 90% intensity according to the 10 maximum-repetition test was used. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to measure the BMD, T-scores and body composition, and indirect fluorescence was used to measure the levels of antinuclear antibodies. Student's t-test was used. Results. Statistical improvement was noted in all strength exercises, including the 45° leg press (Δ%=+50%, p<0.001) and knee extension (Δ%=+15%, p=0.003) to maintain the BMD of the L2-L4 lumbar (Δ%=+0.031%; p= 0.46) as well as the trochanter (Δ%=+0.037%; p=0.31) and BMI (Δ%=-0.8, p=0.54). Conclusion. In this case study, the presented methodology had a positive effect on strength and contributed to the maintenance of BMD and body composition in a woman with SLE undergoing GC treatment(AU)

RESUMO

Recent data have shown the efficacy of cetuximab/Folfiri regimen in patients with chemotherapy-resistant metastatic colorectal cancer. In the literature there are no data about this treatment in HIV-positive patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. At the Aviano Cancer Center, we used the cetuximab/Folfiri regimen and concomitant HAART in an HIV-positive patient with metastatic colorectal cancer. The patient experienced acceptable non-hematological toxicity, without any opportunistic infection and his HIV infection was kept under control. This case suggests that, in the HAART era, a multidisciplinary approach can be offered to HIV patients with advanced cancer when they have good performance status, resulting in efficacious control of the HIV infection.

RESUMO

A new phenomenon of strain relaxation will be presented. In a series of InxGa1-xAs graded composition buffer layers grown on well cut (001) GaAs substrates, a curvature of the epilayer lattice has been found, i.e. a tilt of the epilayer lattice orientation with respect to the substrate which varies coherently along the sample surface on the scale of several mm. The most recent data analysis performed on a buffer layer compositionally graded with a six-step profile shows also a thickness functional dependence of the curvature. The epilayer lattice curvature has been attributed to a coherent lateral distribution of the Burgers' vectors. An analytical model has been developed in the framework of the continuum elasticity theory to compute the related strain field. The results show small but unexpected contributions to the parallel strain.

RESUMO

Ingestion of soil has been identified as a potentially important source of radionuclides, particularly to grazing ruminants. Soil artificially contaminated with radiocaesium was administered orally each day for 33 days to Bergamasca sheep and the transfer to milk measured. Two soil types were used, with a clay content of 11% and 16%, respectively. Transfer coefficient (fm) values to sheep milk, calculated at the equilibrium (period from 7th to 21st day after soil administration), were 3.72 x 10(-4) days l-1 (S.D. = 7.2 x 10(-5) days l-1) and 6.11 x 10(-4) days l-1 (S.D. = 9.1 x 10(-5) days l-1), respectively for the two soils. These low values indicate that radiocaesium is not removed from the binding sites on the clay minerals in the gut of the sheep.

RESUMO

From February 1988 through February 1991, 21 patients were managed by superficial hyperthermia and radiotherapy. Nineteen patients had received previous treatment; the most common histology was breast carcinoma. Twenty-six cycles of combined hyperthermia and radiotherapy were delivered: 4 complete responses (15.4%), 17 partial responses (65.4%), 1 minimal partial response (3.8%), 3 stable diseases (11.6%) and 1 disease progression (3.8%) were obtained. The median duration of response was 7 months (range 1-16) for responding and 4 months (range 2.5-4) for non-responding patients. The toxicity encountered (confined mostly to epithelitis--7/21 patients) was completely reversible. In our experience, hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy proved to be an effective treatment. However, some problem that emerged during treatment planning and delivery showed the need for further development and research into hyperthermic devices and thermometry systems.

RESUMO

From February to October 1987 samples of milk, grass and other components of the cow diet were regularly collected and analyzed for their radiocaesium contents in 26 sampling stations in a north-eastern region of Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia). In this paper we report the feed-to-milk transfer factors for radiocaesium obtained in 13 farms of this region of Italy.

RESUMO

To estimate the radiological consequences in humans due to the Chernobyl nuclear accident (5 May 1986), we have determined both the 137Cs concentration in food and the 137Cs daily urinary excretion on 198 residents of the Pordenone area. The resulting experimental data have been compared with those estimated from the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 10A model (ICRP 1971) using a suitable dietary intake, and they were found to be in reasonable agreement.
