RESUMO

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (d/hh) students are traditionally educated within self-contained programs at residential or special day schools, within self-contained or resource classrooms in public schools, or within regular education classrooms with support provided by an itinerant teacher. The co-enrollment model offers a promising alternative in which these students are educated within a regular education classroom composed of both d/hh and hearing students and team-taught by a teacher of the deaf and a regular education teacher. This article examines the development of one such program and the social and academic performance of the d/hh students within the program. Data on social interaction between d/hh and hearing classmates suggest that specific instructional strategies that promoted students' sign language development, identified d/hh students as "sign language specialists" and grouped d/hh and hearing students during academic activities resulted in increased interaction between these two groups of students. Stanford Achievement Test scores in the areas of reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, mathematical problem solving and procedures indicate that although d/hh students scored below the national normative hearing group, reading comprehension levels exceeded the national normative sample of d/hh students during both years two and three of the program. We discuss the challenges of implementing a co-enrollment program.

RESUMO

We are living in a "connected world" and our patients are taking a more active role in their health care management as well as educating themselves about health-related issues. An office-based website can be an effective tool for plastic surgery practices as well as plastic and reconstructive surgical nurses. This type of a website can serve as a source of information for potential and current clients.

RESUMO

Fields in a concentrated area of soybean production in South Carolina were chosen for soil sampling to determine the distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes. Five hundred sampling sites were distributed over 19 counties according to county soybean acreage. Helicotylenchus and Scutellonema were identified most frequently from soil samples; together, these genera occurred in over 70% of the samples. Pratylenchus and Paratrichodorus were each observed in more than 60% of fields. Meloidogyne spp. were found in 27% of the fields and Hoplolaimus columbus in 14%. Rotylenchulus reniformis and Belonolaimus sp. each occurred in less than 10% of the fields. Tylenchorhynchus and Mesocriconema (Criconemella) were each present in over 40% of the fields, but numbers from each field were low. Of the fields sampled, 14% contained Heterodera glycines. Of these, 47% were race 14 and 32% were race 3. Races 9, 6, and 10 were also observed.

RESUMO

CC's treatment goals were all met with the exception of eliminating the AMNT sign. Slump-sit right knee extension (-15 degrees), right SLR (80 degrees coupled with dorsiflexion), and lumbar flexion (85% coupled with neck flexion) all continued to reproduce right buttock cramping and pain. Currently he is playing basketball without restriction, performing an individualized exercise program that emphasizes lower extremity muscle stretching, AMNT stretching, and advanced truncal stabilization exercises. He has a very good understanding of body mechanics and an awareness of safe SFP during activities of daily living and on the basketball court. His motivation, along with the motivation of parents, coaches, athletic trainer, and physical therapist, greatly assisted CC in returning to competitive basketball. CC is intermittently evaluated to monitor the AMNT sign and the effectiveness of the home exercise program. Currently CC's AMNT appears to regress if he is not monitored on a monthly basis; thus he warrants intermittent treatment. Monitoring of the patient is an integral aspect of long-term management of chronic discogenic disease that is often neglected. It can be hypothesized that monitoring may prevent serious complications in the future for many patients. CC is a patient who needed specific therapeutic intervention beyond rest, general instructions about body mechanics and exercise, modalities, and traditional back school. The history of this patient's problem revealed that rest and general exercises had failed, thus necessitating specific therapeutic treatment. This patient is an excellent example of how physical therapy in the form of manual therapy, specific therapeutic exercise, education through repetition of functional tasks, and the team approach to patient care can lead to a successful treatment outcome.
