RESUMO

In the past, research on the cognitive neural mechanism of second language (L2) learners' processing time information has focused on Indo-European languages. It has also focused on the temporal category expressed by morphological changes. However, there has been a lack of research on L2 learners' various time coding means, especially for Mandarin, which lacks morphological changes. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), we investigated the cognitive neural mechanism of L2 learners with native Indonesian background in processing two time coding means (time adverbs and aspect markers) in Chinese. Indonesian has time adverb encoding time information similar to that of Chinese, but there are no aspect markers similar to Chinese in Indonesian. We measured ERPs time locked to the time adverb " (cengjing)" and the aspect marker "verb + (verb + guo)" in two different conditions, i.e., a control condition (the correct sentence) and a temporal information violation. The experimental results showed that the native speaker group induced the biphasic N400-P600 effect under the condition of time adverb violation, and induced P600 under the condition of the aspect marker "verb + (verb + guo)" violation. Indonesian L2 learners of Chinese only elicited P600 for the violation of time adverbs, and there was no statistically significant N400 similar to that of Chinese native speakers. In the case of aspect marker violation, we observed no significant ERPs component for the Indonesian L2 learners of Chinese. Both groups of subjects induced elicited a widely distributed and sustained negativity on the post-critical words after "verb + (verb + guo)" and "(cengjing)". This showed that the neural mechanism of Indonesian L2 learners of Chinese processing Chinese time coding differs from that of Chinese native speakers.

RESUMO

As a perennial forage crop, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) has been extensively utilized for the vegetation restoration of degraded soil and provides feedstock for forage. Its high usage can be attributed to its high yield potential and the increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration of alfalfa cultivation. However, the impact of land conversion to alfalfa on SOC content and its underlying drivers remain unclear. We performed a meta-analysis at the global scale to explore the quantified effects of alfalfa cultivation on SOC content and identify its controlling factors. We employed 1699 pairwise data points from 90 publications based on cropland/abandoned land conversion to alfalfa. Globally, cropland (cropland-alfalfa) and abandoned land (abandoned land-alfalfa) conversion to alfalfa enhanced SOC content by 12.1 % and 13.7 %, respectively. Alfalfa exhibited greater SOC content benefits in the surface soils (0-20 cm) with a lower level of initial SOC (<16 g kg-1), regardless of the land conversion type. Cropland-alfalfa was observed to increase SOC content with fertilization, irrigation, and conventional tillage in the long term (>5 years). Furthermore, abandoned land-alfalfa enhanced SOC content in the absence of alfalfa biomass removal and for longer cultivation durations (>5 years). Boosted regression tree analyses indicated variations in soil properties (75 % for cropland-alfalfa and 65 % for abandoned land-alfalfa) as the primary factors driving changes in SOC content. The dominant drivers were determined as the soil layer (51.6 %), cultivation duration (13.1 %), and initial SOC (12.9 %) for cropland-alfalfa, and initial SOC (43.7 %), soil layer (24.6 %) and cultivation duration (17.1 %) for abandoned land-alfalfa. Land conversion to alfalfa has great potential for SOC sequestration, particularly in low-fertility soils. Therefore, alfalfa cultivation is highly recommended for degraded lands due to its SOC sequestration benefits in vegetation restoration.

RESUMO

Objectives: Inflammation shows a notable relationship to acute ischemic stroke's (AIS) occurrence and prognosis. However, existing research has confirmed that serum amyloid A (SAA) is an inflammatory biomarker. The aim of this paper was to investigate the association between SAA and the three-month clinical results of acute AIS patients after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). Methods: The evaluation of AIS patients with complete medical records was carried out by prospectively investigating patients hospitalized in our department between January 2020 and February 2023. The SAA levels were examined with the use of an immunosorbent assay kit that shows a relationship with the enzyme (Invitrogen Corp). Patients were dichotomized into favorable (mRS score of 0, 1 or 2) and unfavorable (mRS score of 3, 4, 5, or 6) results with the use of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Results: A total of 405 AIS patients who were subjected to IVT therapy were prospectively covered. To be specific, 121 (29.88%) patients had an unfavorable prognosis during the follow-up for 3 months. On that basis, patients achieving unfavorable results gained notably greater SAA levels (39.77 (IQR 38.32-46.23) vs.31.23 (IQR 27.44-34.47), p < 0.001) during hospitalization in comparison to patients with a better result. In the analysis with multiple variates, SAA was adopted to achieve the independent prediction of the three-month unfavorable clinical results of acute AIS patients after IVT [OR:2.874 (95% CI, 1.764-4.321), p < 0.001]. When the fundamental confounding factors were regulated, the odds ratio (OR) of unfavorable prognosis after AIS patients undergoing IVT therapy was 4.127 (95% CI = 1.695-10.464, p = 0.032) for the maximum tertile of SAA in terms of the minimal tertile. With an AUC of 0.703 (95% CI, 0.649-0.757), SAA revealed a notably more effective discriminating capability in terms of CRP, NLR, EMR, and WBC. SAA as a predictor in terms of the prediction of three-month unfavorable results after AIS patients undergoing IVT therapy achieved specificity and sensitivity of 84.45% and 77.23%, as well as an optimal cut-off value (COV) of 37.39. Conclusion: SAA level that is up-regulated during hospitalization is capable of serving as an effective marker in terms of the prediction of unfavorable three-month results in AIS patients after IVT.

RESUMO

Aortic dissection (AD) is a serious disease with a higher mortality. The thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is a first line regimen for aortic dissection. Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a rare disease, and its definite mechanism is unknown. This is a rare association between the aortic and HPVG. In the present report, we present a case of thoracic aortic dissection, which was the type of Standford B by the computer tomography (CT) angiography, which implicated acute abdominal pain and abdominal distention after TEVAR and immediate abdominal CT shown hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG). The patient, who was treated with conservative treatment of gastrointestinal decompressing, fluid resuscitation, electrolyte replacement, anti-infection, anti-inflammation and anticoagulation, was recovered and discharged without abnormalities. This patient has been followed up for 5 years and has not experienced any physical discomfort related to HPVG. This is the first report that the aortic dissection patient implication with HPVG after thoracic endovascular aortic repair.

RESUMO

Iron (Fe) oxides can stabilize organic carbon (OC) through adsorption and co-precipitation, while microbial Fe reduction can disrupt Fe-bound OC (Fe-OC) and further increase OC mineralization. The net effects of OC preservation and mineralization mediated by Fe oxides are still unclear, especially for old carbon (formed from plant litters over millions of years) and crystalline Fe oxides. Accelerating the recovery of wetland carbon sinks is critical for mitigating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality. Quantifying the net effect of Fe-mediated OC mineralization and preservation is vital for understanding the role of crystalline Fe oxides in carbon cycling and promoting the recovery of soil carbon sinks. Here, we explored the OC balances mediated by hematite (Hem) and lignite addition (Lig) to freshwater wetland (FW, rich in C and Fe) and saline-alkaline wetland (SW, poor in C and Fe) soil slurries, incubated under anaerobic conditions. Results showed that Lig caused net OC accumulation (FW: 5.9 ± 3.6 mg g-1; SW: 8.3 ± 3.2 mg g-1), while Hem caused dramatic OC loss, particularly in the FW soils. Hem inhibited microbial Fe(III) reduction by decreasing the relative abundance of Fe respiration reducers, while substantially enhancing OC mineralization through the shift in the microbial community structure of FW soils. Lig resulted in carbon emission, but its contribution to preservation by the formation of Fe-OC was far higher than that which caused OC loss. We concluded that crystalline Fe oxide addition solely favored the increase of OC mineralization by adjusting the microbial community structure, while old carbon enriched with an aromatic and alkyl promoted Fe-OC formation and further increased OC persistence. Our findings could be employed for wetland restoration, particularly for the recovery of soil carbon sinks.

RESUMO

Human antigen R (HuR), an RNA-binding protein, has been demonstrated to serve an oncogenic role in various types of cancer. Fibroblast growth factor receptor-like 1 (FGFRL1) has been shown to regulate small cell lung cancer (SCLC) chemoresistance. In the present study, the role of HuR in chemoresistance of SCLC, as well as its possible molecular mechanism involving FGFRL1, was explored by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, western blotting, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry and RNA immunoprecipitation. The results revealed that HuR expression levels were markedly upregulated in drug-resistant SCLC cell lines (H69AR and H446DDP) compared with in the parental cell lines (H69 and H446). Knockdown of HuR in drug-resistant SCLC cells enhanced drug sensitivity, cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, molecular mechanism studies indicated that HuR could bind and regulate FGFRL1 expression levels to increase FGFRL1 mRNA stability. Taken together, the present study suggested that HuR may mediate chemoresistance of SCLC by regulating FGFRL1 expression. HuR may represent a prognostic predictor and a potential target for overcoming chemoresistance in SCLC.

RESUMO

Previous studies on the neural cognitive mechanisms of aspectual processing in second language (L2) learners have focused on Indo-European languages with rich inflectional morphology. These languages have aspects which are equipped with inflected verb forms combined with auxiliary or modal verbs. Meanwhile, little attention has been paid to Mandarin Chinese, which has limited morphological inflection, and its aspect is equipped with aspectual particles (e.g., le, zhe, guo). The present study explores the neurocognitive mechanism of Mandarin Chinese aspect processing among two groups of late Mandarin Chinese proficient learners with Thai (with Mandarin Chinese-like aspect markers) and Indonesian (lack of Mandarin Chinese-like aspect markers) as their first language (L1). We measured event-related potentials (ERPs) time locked to the aspect marker le in two different conditions (the aspect violation sentences and the correct sentences). A triphasic ELAN-LAN-P600 effect was produced by the Mandarin Chinese native speakers. However, there was no ELAN and LAN in Indonesian native speakers and Thai native speakers, except a 300-500 ms negativity widely distributed in the right hemisphere and P600-like effect. This suggests that both groups of Mandarin Chinese learners cannot reach the same level as Mandarin Chinese native speakers to process Mandarin Chinese aspect information, probably due to the complex feature of Mandarin Chinese aspect maker, the participants' L2 proficiency and age of L2 acquisition.

RESUMO

In many regions of the world, early diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major challenge due to the large population and lack of medical resources, which is difficult toeffectively address via limited physician manpower alone. Therefore, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based assisted diagnosis and decision-making intelligent medical system with sensors. This system analyzes NSCLC patients' medical records using sensors to assist staging a diagnosis and provides recommended treatment plans to physicians. To address the problem of unbalanced case samples across pathological stages, we used transfer learning and dynamic sampling techniques to reconstruct and iteratively train the model to improve the accuracy of the prediction system. In this paper, all data for training and testing the system were obtained from the medical records of 2,789,675 patients with NSCLC, which were recorded in three hospitals in China over a five-year period. When the number of case samples reached 8000, the system achieved an accuracy rate of 0.84, which is already close to that of the doctors (accuracy: 0.86). The experimental results proved that the system can quickly and accurately analyze patient data and provide decision information support for physicians.

RESUMO

This is a study of the collocation of Chinese verbs with different lexical aspects and aspect markers. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), we explored the processing of aspect violation sentences. In the experiment, we combined verbs of various lexical aspect types with the progressive aspect marker zhe, and the combination of the achievement verbs and the progressive aspect marker zhe constituted the sentence's aspect violation. The participants needed to judge whether a sentence was correct after it was presented. Finally, we observed and analyzed the components of ERPs. The results suggest that when the collocation of aspect markers and lexical aspect is ungrammatical, the N400-like and P600 are elicited on aspect markers, while the late AN is elicited by the word after the aspect marker. P600 and N400-like show that the collocation of Chinese verbs with various lexical aspects and aspect markers involve not only syntactic processing, but also the semantic processing; and the late AN may have been due to the syntax revision and the conclusion at the end of sentences.

RESUMO

To analyze the water use conflict and its driving factors between wetland and agriculture at both regional and local scales, agricultural water consumption and wetland water storage changes in the Sanjiang Plain, the main grain-producing area in Heilongjiang Province of Amur River Basin, were investigated based on statistical data, field survey and GIS calculation. A specific case study in the Qixing River National Nature Reserve (QNNR) wetland-farmland system was completed using a water balance approach. Results showed that the proportion of agricultural water increased from 71.8% to 88.0% while that of ecological water only hovered around approximately 1% in Heilongjiang Province during 2004-2015. Due to wetland loss and degradation, the total surface water storage in the Sanjiang Plain wetlands decreased from 14.46 × 109 t in the 1980s to 4.70 × 109 t in 2010. Agricultural development in successive years, and the dramatic increased requirement for water in paddy fields, intensified the water use conflict between wetlands in the QNNR and surrounding farmlands. Groundwater extraction for irrigation was approximately twice as high as the total infiltration recharge from wetlands and farmlands. It is concluded that the degraded natural water resource endowments are struggle to sustainably support stable grain production as a mainstay of national food safety, which determined the competitive relationship between wetland and agriculture. To mitigate this conflict, adaptive wetland (e.g. water transfer at stagger time, precise water recharge, resourced meltwater) and agricultural techniques (e.g. water-saving irrigation and planting, soil water capacity increment, rainfed agriculture) and five key management solutions were recommended.

RESUMO

This study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of recombinant human kallistatin (Kal) on ulcerative colitis (UC) in the mouse model. Acute colitis was induced by administration of 4% dextran sodium suffate (DSS) to KM mice for 7 days. The mice were then randomized into 5 groups: model control, Kal 0.2 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), 1.0 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1) and 2.0 mg·kg-1·d(-1) group, salazosulfapyridine (SASP) group. Ten age-matched normal KM mouse were administered with saline in the normal control. The weight, colon length, inflammation factor (MPO/SOD/MDA) and TNF-α/IL-10 levels among the five groups of mice were determined. The results showed that histological index score and MPO/MDA/TNF-α levels of high-dose Kal treatment group and SASP group were significantly lower compared with the model group (P < 0.01), but the weight, colon length, IL-10 level and SOD activity were significant higher than the model group (P < 0.01), approaching the normal group. These parameters showed that Kal can significantly relieve the UC state in a dose-dependent manner. This study demonstrates that Kal significantly remits UC in mice, and participates in the regulation of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α/IL-10 levels and has some antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

Human tissue kallikrein-binding protein (Kallistatin, KAL), a secretory protein that participates in the regulation of multiple signaling pathways by binding to the extracellular receptor, however, at present has not been reported about the intracellular activity, and whether it has the similar biological activity with extracellular activity. Here we constructed no signal peptide KAL (NSK) into the adeno-associated virus vector to explore the intracellular activity of KAL. Both the endothelial cell and lung cancer cells could express KAL, but not secreted after rAAV2-NSK transfection. The proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were inhibited, but the apoptosis rate was not affected. The proliferation rates, mobility and tubule formation of all the three tested lung cancer cells, such as NCI-H446, NCI-H460 and A549, were inhibited to different extents. This cellular study not only confirmed the intracellular activity, but also suggested it may serve as a kind of "balance factor" in multi-targeted controlling, which may provide a new train of thoughts to explain the regulatory contradiction in PI3K-Akt signaling pathways by KAL.
