RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical features and outcome of functional thyroid tumours in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective multi-institutional study of 70 dogs diagnosed with thyroid mass and concurrent hyperthyroidism. Clinical data regarding presentation, treatment, outcome and functional thyroid status were retrieved. RESULTS: Overall median survival of dogs with functional thyroid tumours was 35.1 months and 1- and 3-year survival rates were 83 and 49%, respectively. Median survival time was 72.6 months for dogs treated with surgical excision and 15.7 months for dogs that did not receive surgery. Of the 50 dogs treated by surgery and for which thyroid status was known following treatment, 64% developed hypothyroidism after surgery. Histopathologically confirmed metastasis was identified in 3% of dogs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Dogs with functional thyroid tumours may survive a long time after surgical excision, although post-operative hypothyroidism is common.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate performance and resistance to gap formation of a non-absorbable, barbed, monofilament suture, in comparison with a non-absorbable, smooth, monofilament polypropylene suture, in two different suture patterns: three-loop pulley (3LP) and modified Bunnell-Mayer (BM). SAMPLE SIZE: Seventy-two medium-sized cadaveric superficial digital flexor muscle tendon units. METHODS: After manual transection and suture repair, individual specimens were placed in an electromechanical tensile testing machine and tested to monotonic failure using tensile ramp loading. Video data acquisition allowed evaluation of failure mode and quantification of gap formation. RESULTS: Incidence of gap formation between tendon ends was significantly greater in tenorrhaphies repaired with barbed suture compared to those repaired with smooth polypropylene. Use of a 3LP suture pattern caused significantly less gapping between tendon ends when compared to the BM pattern. CONCLUSION: Smooth polypropylene suture was consistently superior in load performance than a unidirectional barbed suture. The 3LP pattern was more resistant than a BM pattern at preventing gap formation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Smooth polypropylene should be recommended over barbed unidirectional suture for use in canine tendinous repair to provide increased resistance to gap formation. The 3LP is superior to the BM suture pattern, requiring significantly more force to cause tenorrhaphy gap formation and failure, which may translate to increased accrual of repair site strength and tendinous healing in clinical situations.

RESUMO

The infrared and Raman spectrum of 1-bromo-3-fluoropropane is reported in the gas, liquid, amorphous solid and annealed polycrystalline states. Only one of the five possible conformers is stable in the crystal, designated the C conformer. The disordered phases show the presence of several other conformers of higher energy, due entirely to conformers designated B and D. Ab initio calculations were performed as rhf/4-31g*/MIDI-4*, rhf/6-31g* and mp2/6-31g* (both frozen core and full electron correlation) for all five conformers. The scaled harmonic force field obtained using the mp2 = full/6-31g* level of the theory is reported for the most stable conformer together with an assignment of fundamentals and potential energy distributions for local symmetry coordinates. Selected computational results are reported for all conformers together with scaled and unscaled wavenumbers and infrared and Raman intensities. The temperature dependent Raman spectrum is reported from room temperature to -100 degrees C. Only three of the five possible conformers can be identified in this spectrum, and there is no evidence of the other two. The energy differences between conformers in the liquid phase were found experimentally to be 132+/-27, 232+/-46 and 106+/-30 cm(-1), respectively between the D and C, B and C and D and B conformers. These differences are substantially less than the differences calculated ab initio at the highest level of the theory used, suggesting that energy differences were decreased by large dipole-dipole interactions present in the liquid but not in the gas.

RESUMO

Stim-O-Stam is a commercial ergogenic aid purported to improve human performance by reducing recovery time and enhancing endurance. The tablets contain a mixture of sodium acid phosphate and potassium phosphate. In this study, under a double-blind cross-over design, 11 male subjects underwent acute (1.24 g one hour before exercise) and chronic (3.73 g X d-1 for 6 d prior to exercise) consumption of Stim-O-Stam to determine the effects of phosphate loading on: treadmill endurance time; treadmill endurance time after 15 min of recovery from first treadmill run; leg power measured for 1 min on the Cybex device; leg power after 10 min recovery from first power test; and oxygen uptake during the treadmill run. Run times ranged from 172 to 183 s on run 1 and 145 to 152 s for run 2. Leg power averaged 62 W for both tests. Oxygen uptake averaged 52 ml X kg-1 X min-1 under all conditions. Analysis of variance showed that there was no significant effect of acute or chronic ingestion of phosphate tablets beyond that of the placebo treatment on any of the performance tests. These results argue against the claim of ergogenic benefits ascribed to this nutritional supplement.
