RESUMO

The present work aims to develop ultra-wide bandwidth air-coupled capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) for binary gas mixture analysis. The detection principle is based on time-of-flight (ToF) measurements, in order to monitor gas ultrasound velocity variations. To perform such measurements, CMUTs were especially designed to work out of resonance mode, like a microphone. The chosen membrane size is 32 × 32 µm2 and gap height is 250 nm. The resonance frequency and collapse voltage were found at 8 MHz and 58 V respectively. As mentioned, the CMUTs were exploited in quasi-static operating mode, in a very low frequency band, from 1 MHz to 1.5 MHz frequencies. The transducer impulse response was characterised, and a -6 dB relative fractional frequency bandwidth (FBW) higher than 100% was measured, enabling to use CMUT for the targeted application. Additionally, a measuring cell has been designed to hold the fabricated CMUT emitter and receiver prototypes facing each other. The volume inside the cell was kept lower than 3 mL and the surface of emitter/receiver was 1.6 × 8 mm2. To validate the general principle of the proposed technique, two binary gas mixtures of CO2/N2 and H2/N2, with varying concentrations, have been tested. The results are very promising with a measured limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3% for CO2 in N2 and 0.15% for H2 in N2.

RESUMO

We use colloidal-probe atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the rheological behavior of polymer solutions confined between two surfaces: the surface of a sphere and a flat surface on which the fluid is deposited. Measurements of the hydrodynamic force exerted on the sphere by the flowing liquid allowed retrieving the viscosity of the solution for different distances between the sphere and the flat surface. This method has been experimentally tested for Newtonian fluids for which the viscosity does not vary versus the gap dimensions. On the other hand, for non-Newtonian fluids, such as the large molecular weight polymer solutions used here, the measured viscosity depends on the gap height D between the flat surface and the sphere. The decrease of the viscosity versus gap height is similar to previously observed variations in colloidal suspensions. Depletion of polymers in the gap region due to the high shear rates involved is a possible cause for such a variation.

RESUMO

Under steady-state conditions, the resulting echoes have very complex T1 and T2 relationships. Many authors exploited these echoes in different sequences to produce either T1- or T2-weighted images. The simultaneous acquisition of two echoes in a single sequence provides two images of clearly different contrasts. We implemented such a sequence, in a 3D-acquisition mode, combining the advantages of thin and contiguous slices with those of a multi-echo sequence. The contrast of the images was correlated with theoretical results, derived from Bloch equations. In order to estimate the acquisition parameters (alpha, TE, TR) to obtain an optimal T1- or T2-contrast between two tissues, a computer simulation of these equations was used in conjunction with the simplex method. The results show that this sequence improves the clinical efficiency of MRI, particularly in neurological and articular disease.
