RESUMO

Hand performance and laterality scores on a unimanual tapping test were studied in relation to age, sex, and handedness in a sample of 209 French children. Each child performed three trials with each hand. Older children were faster, but differences between hands were not related to age. Right-handed girls were more lateralized than right-handed boys. Left- and right-handers could be differentiated more clearly by tapping speed than by variability of tapping. A subsample of 36 right-handers were retested to estimate reliability. The coefficients were high, especially when using the mean of trials as the dependent variable. Correlations between performance on the tapping task and another test of hand-efficiency (dot-filling task) were low.

RESUMO

A dot-filling test was used to assess hand performance in two populations of French children. In the first experiment, the effect of sex, age and handedness on hand performance was examined (1742 children). Age was related to the degree of laterality, but girls were less lateralized than boys. The second experiment (200 children) showed that the surprising sex differences cannot be explained by the group testing procedure. Underlying processes leading to performance in the dot-filling task are probably different from those involved in other tests generally used for children.

RESUMO

The "37" H-2 class I mouse gene, located in the Tla complex, is poorly polymorphic and is transcribed in a wide variety of cells and tissues. Using antisera directed against peptides deduced from the gene sequence, we demonstrate that the 37 gene encodes a 45.5-kDa cell surface glycoprotein. This protein, initially identified on the surface of mouse L cells transfected with an overexpressing 37 gene, is present on cells such as splenocytes of various mouse strains except those of A/J mice. Thus, mouse cells may express not only the major transplantation antigens encoded by the K and D region genes, but at least one additional poorly polymorphic class I molecule encoded by the 37 gene.

RESUMO

When other treatments fail, the prognosis of some chronic respiratory insufficient patients with frequently occurring failures improved when a tracheostomy canula was installed and connected to a respiratory for several hours a day. The even partial correction of blood gas disorders avoids a relapse in right cardiac failure and enables home care of the patient who can resume formerly abandonned activities. Home assisted ventilation greatly modifies the somatic and psychological condition of the patient and requires excellent cooperation by the family and strict technical supervision, at the risk of failure.
