RESUMO

Transfer of natural radionuclides from soil to water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk) in Hanoi, Vietnam have been investigated using a low background gamma spectrometer with an HPGe detector (Model-GC5019). Twenty pairs of soil and water spinach samples in two environmental conditions, i.e., flooded and unflooded, were collected for measuring the activity concentrations and determining the soil-to-plant transfer factors (TFs) of natural radionuclides. For water spinach, stems and leaves were collected as the main parts for human consumption and livestock food. The TF of 40K is within the range of 0.32-2.49, which is greater than that of 228Ra (0.01-0.17) and 226Ra (0.01-0.13). The geometric means (geometric standard deviations) of the TFs are 1.17(1.89), 0.05(2.41) and 0.04(1.88) for flooded sites, and 0.89(1.73), 0.03(2.12) and 0.03(1.82) for unflooded sites, respectively. Comparing between the flooded and unflooded sites, the TFs are all greater at the flooded sites.

RESUMO

The Tilt-depth is a popular approach for determining depths of magnetic sources. As this method is based on the distance between contour levels of the tilt angle, it can lead to inaccurate depth estimates when the contour lines are distorted by the presence of noise. In this paper, we stabilize the Tilt-depth method based on the computation of stable vertical derivative obtained by the ß-VDR method. The presented method is demonstrated on synthetic magnetic anomalies and real magnetic data from the Arabian Shield. The results obtained from the synthetic examples coincide well with the actual depths. These results proved the utility of the presented method in cases where the field is corrupted by noise. The real example shows that the presented method can provide valuable information on subsurface structures of the area where the Tilt-depth estimates are consistent with the result of the horizontal tilt angle. The findings show that the presented method is less sensitive to noise and can provide source edges and depths more clearly and with higher accuracy.

RESUMO

210Po is a significant source of ionizing radiation that people are exposed to through food globally. This paper presents the wide range of accumulation level of 210Po in the organs of two species of shellfish including freshwater mussel (Sinanodonta jourdyi) and golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata), common freshwater species in Vietnam. There was a significant correlation between 210Po activity in muscle to their mass and size of freshwater mussels. In contrast, there was no relation between other organs of both species with their mass and size. The annual effective dose due to consumption of freshwater mussels ranged from 68.7 to 291 µSv year-1 with a mean value of 138 µSv year-1 for muscle and from 321 to 4560 µSv year-1 with a mean value of 1422 µSv year-1 for the hepatopancreas. Meanwhile, the AED for golden apple snail was recorded to be higher with values ranging from 105 to 2189 µSv year-1 with mean value of 673 µSv year-1 for muscle and from 468 to 4155 µSv year-1 with a mean value of 2332 µSv year-1 for hepatopancreas. Thus, the consumption of these two types of shellfish is considered relatively safe, but the hepatopancreas gland must be removed before processing.

RESUMO

The present investigation is the first of its kind which aims to study the characteristics of microbial consortium inhabiting one of the natural high background radiation areas of the world, Chavara Coast in Kerala, India. The composition of the microbial community and their structural changes were evaluated under the natural circumstances with exorbitant presence of radionuclides in the sediments and after the radionuclide's recession due to mining effects. For this purpose, the concentration of radionuclides, heavy metals, net radioactivity estimation via gross alpha and beta emitters and other physiochemical characteristics were assessed in the sediments throughout the estuarine stretch. According to the results, the radionuclides had a significant effect in shaping the community structure and composition, as confirmed by the bacterial heterogeneity achieved between the samples. The results indicate that high radioactivity in the background environment reduced the abundance and growth of normal microbial fauna and favoured only the growth of certain extremophiles belonging to families of Piscirickettsiacea, Rhodobacteriacea and Thermodesulfovibrionaceae, which were able to tolerate and adapt towards the ionizing radiation present in the environment. In contrast, communities from Comamondacea, Sphingomonadacea, Moraxellacea and Erythrobacteracea were present in the sediments collected from industrial outlet, reinforcing the potent role of radionuclides in governing the community pattern of microbes present in the natural environment. The study confirms the presence of these novel and unidentified bacterial communities and further opens the possibility of utilizing their usefulness in future prospects.

RESUMO

210Po (polonium), one of the most toxic naturally occurring radionuclides, is well-known as a common natural radionuclide in fish species. Human consumption of 210Po-contaminated fish could result in a significant internal dose. This study determined by alpha spectrometry the 210Po activity in sixteen selected fish species with different living behaviors (pelagic, demersal), trophic positions (herbivores, carnivores, omnivorous), and masses in Dong Thai Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam. The min, max, and average of the 210Po concentration of sixteen fish species were 0.80 ± 0.44, 12.7 ± 0.20, and 3.54 ± 0.31 Bq kg-1, respectively. Regarding the different living behaviors, trophic positions, and masses, the results showed trending of 210Popelagic > 210Podemersal; 210Poherbivores < 210Pocarnivores < 210Poomnivorous and 210Po<0.2 kg > 210Po0.2-1 kg > 210Po>1 kg, respectively. The 210Po concentrations in muscle tissue were greater in fish species with a small mass, omnivorous trophic position, and pelagic living behavior relative to demersal fish with a larger mass that were herbivores or carnivores. In addition, the results showed an uneven distribution of 210Po activities in atmospheric aerosols, terrestrial soils, surface waters, and lake sediments in the study area. The primary source of 210Po could be supplied from atmospheric aerosols and/or terrestrial soils in the study area. The 210Po annual effective dose for adults due to fish consumption has been calculated with a range from 20 to 400 µSv y-1 and 111 µSv. y-1 on average, and it is far below the allowable limits of 1000 µSv y-1.

RESUMO

210Po concentration in the edible muscle tissue and digestive diverticulum organs of Asian overbite clam at the near-shore Thai Binh, Vietnam was analyzed using alpha detectors. The 210Po activity in muscle tissue and digestive diverticulum organs ranged from 5 ± 1 to 178 ± 10 and from 118 ± 7 to 812 ± 12 Bq.kg-1 with the average value of 25 and 324 Bq.kg-1, respectively. Results showed that 210Po activity in the digestive diverticulum was significantly higher than in the muscle tissue. There was a slightly inverse correlation between 210Po activity in muscle tissue, digestive diverticulum, and clam weight and size. The annual committed effective dose was calculated from 210Po due to the consumption of Asian overbite clam for adults in the study area was higher than the guideline value of 0.2 - 1 mSv.y-1.

RESUMO

The Red River is one of the largest rivers that plays an important role in the economic development of North Vietnam. There are many radionuclides bearing rare earth, uranium ore mines, mining industrial zones and magma intrusive formations along this river. The contamination and accumulation of radionuclides could exist at high concentration in surface sediments of this river. Thus, the present investigation aims to study the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th (228Ra), 40K, and 137Cs in Red River surface sediments. Thirty sediment samples were collected, and their activity concentration was calculated using high-purity germanium gamma-ray detector. The observed results ranged from 51.0 ± 2.1 to 73.6 ± 3.7 for 226Ra, 71.4 ± 3.6 to 103 ± 5.2 for 232Th, 507 ± 24.0 to 846 ± 42.3 for 40K, and ND (not detected) to 1.33 ± 0.06 Bq/kg for 137Cs, respectively. In general, the natural radionuclides concentration of 226Ra, 232Th (228Ra), and 40K is higher than the average world average values. This indicated that the natural radionuclides could contribute from similar and principal sources surrounding the upstream of Lao Cai where distributed uranium ore mines, radionuclide bearing rare earth mines, mining industrial zones and intrusive formations. Regarding the radiological hazard assessment, results of the indices computed such as absorbed gamma dose rate (D), the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), and the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) were nearly two times higher than world average values.

RESUMO

The current study sought to determine the levels of radioactivity and heavy metal contamination in 22 dried fish samples collected in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The study found that there were substantial heavy metals concentrations for Pb, Mn, Cr, Co, and Cd. The concentration of heavy metal Pb being alarmingly high (32.85 to 42.09 mg/kg), followed by Cd (2.18 mg/kg to 3.51 mg/kg) than the permissible limit of WHO (2.17 mg/kg) for Pb and (0.05 mg/kg) for Cd. In terms of radioactivity, the gross alpha activity in the dried fish samples ranged 6.25 ± 0.12 to 48.21 ± 0.11 Bg/kg with an average of 20.35 Bg/kg and with a gross beta activity from 6.48 ± 0.02 to 479.47 ± 0.65 Bg/kg, for an average of 136.83 Bg/kg. The study found that the internal radiation dose that people receive upon consuming the fish species Sphyraena obtusata, Rachycentron canadum, Lepidocephalichthys thermalis, Synodontidae, Carangoides malabaricus, Sardina pilchardus, Scomberomorus commerson, Sillago sihama, Gerres subfasciatus, and Amblypharyngodon mola is above the ICRP-recommended limit of less than 1 mSv/year. Annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) and total excessive lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) ranged 0.488 µSv year-1 and 0.004 µSv year-1 respectively, the values of AGDE being higher than the global average value. The findings of the study indicate that the analyzed dried fish samples are contaminated with Pb and Cd, which shall pose cancer risk to the consumers as a result.

RESUMO

The baseline data of radioactivity levels in food is one of the main factors for the assessment of resident's health risk. Gross beta and alpha activity was identified for selected commercial freshwater fish species, including 29 types of fish species by a gas-flow proportional detector. The samples were collected from wholesale markets in Hanoi city, Vietnam. The highest gross alpha activity was recorded in blotched snakehead, a pelagic and carnivorous species, and the lowest one was recorded in common carp, a demersal and omnivorous species. Meanwhile, the gross beta activity was much higher than the gross alpha activity with the highest value of gross beta, observed in Wels catfish, a demersal and carnivorous species, and the lowest one found in Mudskipper a demersal, herbivores species. Regarding feeding types, the gross alpha activity was observed in the order of Alcarnivores > Alomnivores > Alherbivores whereas the gross beta was non-distinction. In terms of living behavior, the gross alpha activity in pelagic species was much higher than that in demersal species (Alpelagic > > Aldemersal) and indifferent for gross beta. There was an insignificant relationship between the trophic level with gross beta and alpha activities in freshwater fish species. The calculated annual effective dose ranged from 0.19 to 1.88 and 0.78 mSv.y-1 on average, being within the limited dose for the public as reported by UNSCEAR in which gross beta activity has a strong correlation with the total annual effective dose.

RESUMO

Understanding the radon dispersion released from this mine are important targets as radon dispersion is used to assess radiological hazard to human. In this paper, the main objective is to develop and optimize a machine learning model namely Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for quick and accurate prediction of radon dispersion released from Sinquyen mine, Vietnam. For this purpose, a total of million data collected from the study area, which includes input variables (the gamma data of uranium concentration with 3 × 3m grid net survey inside mine, 21 of CR-39 detectors inside dwellings surrounding mine, and gamma dose at 1 m from ground surface data) and an output variable (radon dispersion) were used for training and validating the predictive model. Various validation methods namely coefficient of determination (R2), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were used. In addition, Partial dependence plots (PDP) was used to evaluate the effect of each input variable on the predictive results of output variable. The results show that ANN performed well for prediction of radon dispersion, with low values of error (i.e., R2 = 0.9415, RMSE = 0.0589, and MAE = 0.0203 for the testing dataset). The increase of number of hidden layers in ANN structure leads the increase of accuracy of the predictive results. The sensitivity results show that all input variables govern the dispersion radon activity with different amplitudes and fitted with different equations but the gamma dose is the most influenced and important variable in comparison with strike, distance and uranium concentration variables for prediction of radon dispersion.

RESUMO

The water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forrsk.) is a common vegetable and a part of the staple diet in Vietnam. It has a well-known tendency for the high absorption of lead, including the radioactive isotope 210Pb. 210 Pb day to 210Po, which is one of the most toxic radioactive isotopes when ingested. Currently, there are few data available on the activity concentration or transfer parameters of water spinach grown in Vietnam. To provide this data, in this study, the 210Po activity concentrations in the soil, water and the roots, stems, and leaves of two types of spinach (grown in soil flooded with water and grown in normal soil) in Hanoi, Vietnam were determined by alpha spectrometry. The order of activity concentrations for water spinach grown in unflooded was Cstem < Cleaf < Croot, while for flooded Cstem ≈ Croot < Cleaf. The transfer factors followed a similar pattern.

RESUMO

210Po concentration in thirty popular marine species (twenty five fishes, four bivalves and one crab) with different habitats, feeding types, and trophic levels at the near-shore Binh Thuan, Vietnam was analyzed using the alpha detectors. The 210Po activities were widely ranged from 3.07 ± 0.18 in a fish species (Bumpnose trevally) to 78.6 ± 5.3 Bq/kg w.w in a bivalve species (Green mussel) with the average value of 16.6 Bq/kg w.w. The results showed that the species with lower trophic level value have higher 210Po concentration. Regarding the feeding types, the 210Po concentration in the omnivorous species is about 2.9 times higher than in the carnivorous species. The species living in demersal zone accumulated a high 210Po in comparison with species living in reef-associated and pelagic-neritic zones. The calculated annual committed effective dose from 210Po due to the ingestion of seafood from demersal zone and bivalve species of the area was significant high.

RESUMO

The Acacia auriculiformis is a tree common in tropical Asian countries, capable of growing in many different soil types, so it could be used for biomonitoring for high natural radionuclide areas in tropical and subtropical climates. The transfer factor (TF) of radionuclides from soil to A. auriculiformis in eight uranium and rare earth element (REE) mining areas of North Vietnam was investigated. The activity concentrations 226Ra, 238U, 137Cs, 228Ra, and 40K in both soil and A. auriculiformis showed considerable variation. The TFs of these radionuclides also varied in a wide range. In most of the eight areas, the highest TF was observed for 137Cs and 228Ra. While the TFs for 226Ra and 238U were smallest. In addition, the TFs for radionuclides near REE mines were similar to those observed near uranium mines. The TFs for A. auriculiformis were within the ranges of TF reported for other plants, except for 137Cs.

RESUMO

The determination of natural radionuclide concentrations plays an important role for assuring public health and in the estimation of the radiological hazards. This is especially true for high level radiation areas. In this study, 226Ra, 228Ra and 238U concentrations were measured in well waters surrounding eight of the high-level natural radiation areas in northern Vietnam. The 226Ra, 228Ra and 238U activity concentrations vary from <1.2 × 10-3-2.7 (0.46), <2.6 × 10-3-0.43 (0.07) and <38 × 10-3-5.32 Bq/L (0.50 of median), respectively. 226Ra and 238U isotopes in most areas are in equilibrium, except for the DT-Thai Nguyen area. The calculated radiological hazard indices are generally higher than WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations. Average annual effective dose and excess lifetime cancer risk values due to drinking well water range from to 130 to 540 µSv/year and 7.4 × 10-6 to 3.1 × 10-5, respectively.

RESUMO

The study of staple food products is crucial to assure public safety and provides input for predictive dose assessment models. To further this goal, the activity concentrations, transfer factors, and radiological hazards of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were studied for ten pairs of selected vegetables and soils in Tien Le near Hanoi in Vietnam. This is the first study in this area for Vietnamese vegetable samples. The ten most popular vegetables in Vietnamese diet were selected, namely choy sum, crown daisy, lettuce, cabbage, Malabar spinach, beans, sweet potato, potato, kohlrabi and carrot. The research results showed that the activity concentrations observed in vegetable crops did not present the previously reported strong correlation to those in soil. The ranges of TFs of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were 4 × 10-2 - 6.9 × 10-1, 8 × 10-2 - 9.7 × 10-1; and 1.0 × 100-1.6 × 101, respectively. Values for leafy vegetables and tubers exceed previous world range figures for Th and K. The soil has been evaluated for radiological hazard indices, which predict almost no risk to human health in the study area.

RESUMO

The measured gross alpha and gross beta activities in the edible muscle tissues of eleven selected marine species along the coast of North Vietnam varied from 10.2 ± 1.5 to 73.2 ± 8.1 Bq/kg (wwt) and from 10.6 ± 0.4 to 68.8 ± 2.8 Bq/kg (wwt), respectively. The lowest gross alpha activity was recorded for bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) as a result of its carnivorous diet, and the highest alpha activity was noted for blood cockle (Anadara granosa) as a result of its omnivorous diet. However, the gross beta activities in both carnivorous and omnivorous species were similar. The highest and lowest gross beta activities were observed for narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) and for bigfin reef squid and squid (Teuthida), respectively. All three aforementioned species have carnivorous diets. The calculated annual committed effective dose resulting from the consumption of 25 kg of muscle tissue per year varied from 192 to 1375 µS with an average of 689 µS.

RESUMO

Activity concentration of 210Po in the edible muscle tissues of twelve sea-food species (the most common marine food consumed of population in Vietnam) were analyzed using the PIPS detectors ORTEC Alpha-Ensemble spectrometer. The 210Po activity concentration in studied samples was found to vary from 0.82 ± 0.47 to 70.3 ± 8.5 Bq/kg fresh weight. The highest activity concentration was recorded for the Blood cockle (Anadara granosa) and the lowest for Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). The annual committed effective dose (CED) of 210Po to humans (the local residents) due to ingestion of each studied species was calculated from 18.5 to 1586 µSv/y. The average annual committed effective dose value was reported 394 µSv/y, which is marginally higher than the average CED contributed from ingestion of food and water total in global background (290 µSv/y).
