MicroRNA (miRNA) plays an important role in the control of gene expression and is implied in many biological functions, including embryo implantation and development. The aim was to assess plasma miRNA profiles during the peri-implantation and ascertain potential candidate miRNA markers for early pregnancy diagnosis in ovine plasma. The plasma samples were obtained from a total of 24 ewes on days 12 (pre-implantation; P12, n = 4), 16 (implantation; P16, n = 4) and 22 (post-implantation; P22, n = 4) after mating, and on their corresponding days of 12 (Pre-C; C12, n = 4), 16 (Imp-C; C16, n = 4) and 22 (Post-C; C22, n = 4) of the estrous cycle. The miRNA profiles in plasma were assessed by microarray technology. We detected the presence of 60 ovine-specific miRNAs in plasma samples. Of these miRNAs, 22 demonstrated a differential expression pattern, especially between the estrous cycle and early pregnancy, and targeted 521 genes. Two miRNAs (oar-miR-218a and oar-miR-1185-3p) were confirmed using RT-qPCR in the ovine plasma samples. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of target genes established six functional modules, of which modules 1 and 3 were enriched in the common GO terms, such as inflammatory response, defense response, and regulation of immune response. In contrast, module 2 was enriched in the developmental process involved in reproduction, embryo development, embryonic morphogenesis, and regulation of the developmental process. The results indicate that miRNAs profiles of plasma seemed to be modulated during the peri-implantation stage of pregnancy in ewes. Circulating miRNAs could be promising candidates for diagnosis in early ovine pregnancy.

MicroRNA (miRNA), acting as the transcriptional regulator of gene expression, has been widely demonstrated to be involved in many biological functions, including embryo implantation and development. The objective of the current study was to illuminate the expression pattern of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the endometrium during the peri-implantation in ewes. Intercaruncular endometrial samples was obtained from a total of 24 ewes on days of 12 (pre-implantation, n = 4), 16 (implantation, n = 4) and 22 (post-implantation, n = 4) of pregnancy following mating, and on their corresponding days of 12 (n = 4), 16 (n = 4) and 22 (n = 4) of the estrous cycle. The miRNA profiles were examined in the endometrium by microarray technology. We detected 116 ovine specifics miRNAs in the endometrium. Of these, nineteen were differentially expressed in early pregnancy. Four miRNAs (oar-miR-370-3p, oar-miR-411b-5p, oar-miR-379-3p and oar-miR-411a-3p) that had the most differential fold change were confirmed by RT-qPCR in ovine endometrium. The differentially expressed miRNAs targeted a total of 315 genes, resulting in 39 GO terms in molecular function, 353 in biological process, and 17 in the cellular component. The construction of the PPI network of target genes established two functional modules mostly enriched in the innate immune system, toll receptor cascades in module 1, whereas genes in module 2 were associated with GMCSF-mediated signaling events, insulin pathway, and mTOR signaling pathway. Based on the results, we may imply that miRNAs modulate ovine endometrium during the peri-implantation.

This study was performed to determine the blood reference values of hematological and biochemical parameters in Hair goats at different ages. For this aim, clinically healthy Hair goats (n = 180, ages of six month and 1-3 years male and female) were used to collect blood samples. In whole blood, white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)and red cell distribution width (RDW) were evaluated. The levels of, albumin, total protein, globulin, glucose, total bilirubin, urea, creatinine, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), creatine kinase (CK), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and iron levels were investigated in sera. Age and sex had no effect on the cell structures of blood. In the either sex (male or female), age had no effect. However, sex had a significant effect on the blood cell structures except for WBC, HGB, and HCT. Albumin, protein, calcium, AST, ALT, ALP and magnesium values were not different among groups. Both the age and sex of the goats had significant effects on blood levels of glucose, phosphorus, urea, cholesterol, creatinine, GGT, CK and total bilirubin. In conclusion, this was the first study reporting the hematologic and biochemical parameters in blood of the Hair goats. The results indicated that these parameters could show variations under physiological conditions due to age and gender.

Organic air pollutants represent many different pollutants, including persistent toxic organics and volatile organic compounds (VOC). The VOC group includes about 150 different compounds, the majority of which are considered harmful and toxic to human health. Considering all these features, the removal of VOC is of great importance. According to the Industrial Air Pollution Control Regulation, VOCs in flue gases are classified, and the limit value for the most dangerous group is specified as 20 mg/m3 according to the degree of damage. From past to present, many different removal technologies have been developed and continue to be developed. Removal of pollutants at low concentrations by conventional methods is more inadequate than those above certain concentrations. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is one of the technologies used for VOC removal recently. It has been determined that many different organic pollutants can be removed with this method. Within the scope of this study, the removal of benzene and toluene pollutants, which are two important VOCs frequently encountered in flue gases, by the photocatalytic oxidation method has been studied under UVC irradiation. In this study, a new photocatalyst by doping silver (Ag), a noble metal, and nickel (Ni), one of the transition metals, on TiO2 nanoparticles was developed and a laboratory-scale reactor system was designed. Many experiments were carried out by changing the system parameters such as ambient temperature (120 °C, 150 °C, 180 °C), humidity (25% and 50%), and percentage of Ag and Ni doping on TiO2 (0.5%, 1%, 2.5%, %5) and the most successful conditions for the removal of benzene and toluene contaminants were tried to be determined based on the results obtained. When all experiments carried out within the scope of this study were considered, the average removal efficiency for benzene was found as 89.33%, while the average removal efficiency for toluene was 88.23%. According to the obtained results, the most suitable conditions for the simultaneous removal of benzene and toluene pollutants with photocatalytic oxidation method under UVC light were determined as 120 °C temperature, 25% humidity, and 0.5% doping photocatalyst.

BACKGROUND: Sperm cryopreservation has been widely used in the field of reproductive biotechnology. It applies to certain males of economic and scientific values, including livestock breeds or endangered animal species. The development of a semen extender with a low cryoprotectant concentration and an appropriate amount of trehalose and boron can prevent the deterioration of sperm parameters. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study is to establish a suitable ram extender model, by examining different combinations of high (5%) and low (3%) glycerol concentrations (to reduce its toxic effects on sperm freezing), a fixed amount of trehalose and an increased dose of boron to prevent the deterioration of sperm parameters, and investigate the levels of gene expressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Merino ram ejaculates were collected. The collected ejaculates providing the defined criteria were pooled. The pooled ejaculates were divided into eight aliquots and diluted with the Tris extender including different combinations of glycerol (5% and 3%) and boron (0.25, 0.5, and 1 mm) concentrations and a fixed amount of trehalose, then frozen. After freeze-thawing process, sperm motility, mitochondrial membrane activity, plasma membrane integrity, acrosomal membrane integrity, DNA damage (single cell gel electrophoresis (COMET) and TUNEL assays) as well as NAD(P)H quinone oxyreductase (NQO1), glutamate-cycteine ligase (GCLC), and glutathione S-transferase (GSTP1) for molecular mechanisms of sperm cell response to oxidative stress were assessed for different extender groups following freeze-thawing process: 5% glycerol + 0 mm boron (G5B0.00), 5% glycerol + 0.25 mm boron (G5B0.25), 5% glycerol + 0.5 mm boron (G5B0.50), 5% glycerol + 1 mm boron (G5B1.00), 3% glycerol + 0 mm boron (G3B.00), 3% glycerol + 0.25 mm boron (G3B0.25), 3% glycerol + 0.5 mm boron (G3B0.50), and 3% glycerol + 1 mm boron (G3B1.00). RESULTS: G3B0.25 presented higher percentages of subjective motility, mitochondrial activity, and viability of spermatozoa comparing with G5B0.00 and groups with boron. Supplementation of 0.25 mm boron with and without trehalose (G3B0.25 and G5B0.25) showed higher acrosome integrity, compared with G5B0.00, G5B1.00, G3B0.50, and G3B1.00. For TUNEL analysis, G3B1.00 showed the highest DNA integrity among the experimental groups which was statistically significant only with G5B0.50 (p < 0.05). The mRNA levels of NQO1 were significantly decreased in G5B1.00, G3B0.50, and G3B1.00, when compared to G5B0.00. In comparison with G5B0.00, supplementation of 1 mm boron with and without trehalose had significantly lower expression of GCLC. The level of GSTP1 gene was significantly lower (approximately threefold) in G3B1.00, compared to G5B0.00 (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It can be assumed that the increase of the boron concentration in the extender may have important adverse effects on sperm parameters and antioxidant gene expression after thawing. The results obtained from this study will help to understand the toxicity limits of boron and eliminate the toxicity of glycerol in studies of gametes and tissue freezing. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of sufficient boron can decrease cryodamages of cryopreservation of mammalian spermatozoa as well tissue engineering.

This study aimed to determine the effect of flunixin meglumine treatment during and after the transfer of in vivo produced embryos to Angus (cows) and Holstein (cows and heifers) breeds of cattle on pregnancy rate. Holstein cows were used as donors in the study. A double dose of prostaglandin F2α was administered to the recipient animals for synchronization. Uterine flushing was performed in donors on day 7 after artificial insemination. A total of 295 transferable embryos were obtained. These embryos were transferred to Angus cows (n = 85), Holstein heifers (n = 80) and Holstein cows (n = 130). After the transfer, these animals were divided into three subgroups. The first subgroup (TI) was administered flunixin meglumine during embryo transfer, and the second subgroup (TII) was administered flunixin meglumine both during embryo transfer and on days 8 and 9 after the transfer. The third subgroup (TIII) was not administered anything and it was considered the control group. Pregnancy examination of the recipients was performed on days 30-35 after the transfer using real-time ultrasonography. The pregnancy rates after embryo transfer were found to be 43.52% in Angus cows, 42.5% in Holstein heifers, and 24.61% in Holstein cows (p < .05). When the animals were not classified according to breed, the pregnancy rates in subgroups TI, TII and TIII were found to be 29.29%, 45.10% and 29.79%, respectively (p < .05). In addition, the pregnancy rates were higher in TII and TIII subgroups of Angus cows and Holstein heifers compared to that of Holstein cows (p < .05). As a result, the pregnancy rates obtained after embryo transfer in Angus cows and Holstein heifers were found to be higher than that in Holstein cows. In addition, it was concluded that the administration of flunixin meglumine during and during/after embryo transfer has a positive effect on pregnancy rates in Angus cows and Holstein heifers.

In this study, the effect of serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity on superovulation response and embryo yield was evaluated. The study material comprised 50 Holstein cows aged 3-4 years on postpartum day 90-120 with a body condition score of 3-3.25. A progesterone-based estrus synchronization protocol was initially administered to the selected donors. For this purpose, progesterone source was inserted intravaginally (day 0) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone injection was performed (day 6). Seven days after the insertion of progesterone device, follicle-stimulating hormone injections (total dose of 500 µg in decreasing doses for 4 days) were administered for superovulation. On the morning of the ninth day, prostaglandin (PG) F2α was administered, and the progesterone device was removed from the vagina in the evening on the same day. Two days after PGF2α administration, fixed-time artificial insemination was performed in the morning and in the evening. On the day of artificial insemination, blood samples were taken from the donors to determine the serum PON-1 activity. Uterine flushing was performed seven days after insemination. The results revealed that the serum PON-1 activity (mean ± SD, 562.71 ± 140.23 U/l) of the cows that responded to superovulation (donors with total corpus luteum count of ≥3 in both ovaries) was higher than those (389.91 ± 80.51 U/l) that did not (P<0.05). On the day of insemination, a positive correlation was determined between serum PON-1 activity and the counts of total corpus luteum (r=0.398), total oocyte/embryo (r=0.468), transferable embryo (r=0.453), and Code I embryos (r=0.315, P<0.05). Unlike the Code I embryos, there was no significant correlation between serum PON-1 activity and the number of Code III embryos. Moreover, no significant difference in the number of Code III embryos between the two PON-1 groups was observed. However, embryo yield and quality were found to have increased with increased PON-1 activity. Therefore, it was concluded that serum PON-1 activity may be associated with superovulation response, embryo yield and quality in donor cows.

BACKGROUND: Freeze-thawing process negatively affects ram spermatozoa in terms of sperm quality, DNA integrity and antioxidant defence system. Thus, antioxidant supplementation of spermatozoa during freeze-thawing is suggested to improve sperm parameters. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of fetuin and trehalose added into ram semen extender on sperm parameters, antioxidant parameters, antioxidant-related gene expressions and DNA integrity during the freeze-thawing process, in low glycerol concentration. METHODS: Semen samples collected from six mature rams were pooled and splitted into equal aliquots and diluted with a tris-based extender containing different concentrations of glycerol (G5; %5 and G3; %3), fetuin (F; 2.5, 5 and 15 mg/mL) and trehalose (60 mm) as eight groups (G5F0, G5F2.5, G5F5, G5F15, G3F0, G3F2.5, G3F5 and G3F15). RESULTS: G3F5 group resulted in the highest motility, mitochondrial activity and viability and the lowest DNA fragmentation and DNA damage (p < 0.05). Also, G3F0 displayed considerably more cryoprotective effect compared with G5F0 group (p < 0.05) in terms of motility, mitochondrial activity and viability rates. Lipid peroxidation levels decreased in G5F5 group compared with G5F0 group (p < 0.05). The levels of total glutathione increased in G3F2.5 group (p < 0.05) in comparison with the G5F0 group. NQO1 gene levels were upregulated approximately twofold in G5F5, G5F15, G3F2.5, G3F5 and G3F15 groups compared with G5F0 group (p < 0.05). The levels of GCLC gene were approximately twofold higher in G3F0, G3F2.5, G3F5 and G3F15 groups compared with G5F0 group (p < 0.05). GSTP1 gene levels were significantly higher with different levels in all treatment groups except for G5F2.5 and G3F0 groups in comparison with G5F0 group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Co-supplementation of tris-based extender having low glycerol (3%) with trehalose and fetuin to enhance the quality of ram spermatozoa after freeze-thawing process is recommended.

This study aimed to evaluate the comparative effects of taxifolin hydrate and trehalose on the quality of frozen-thawed ram spermatozoa for the first time. Ejaculates collected from six mature rams were pooled, and divided to eight equal aliquots to extend them with different concentrations of glycerol (%5 and %3), taxifolin hydrate (10, 100, and 500 µM), and trehalose (60 mM) as eight groups (G5T0, G5T10, G5T100, G5T500, G3T0, G3T10, G3T100, and G3T500). After freeze-thawing process of cryopreservation, microscopic and oxidative stress parameters, and gene expression levels were investigated for understanding of possible impacts of taxifolin hydrate and trehalose. The study showed that G3T10 resulted in the highest post-thawed viability and mitochondrial activity. Moreover, all extenders with taxifolin hydrate reduced DNA fragmentation in comparison to G5T0, but DNA damage was prevented at the highest rate in presence of G5T10. The level of LPO significantly decreased in the groups G5T500 and G3T100, and the expression levels of NQO1, GCLC, and GSTP1 genes significantly increased in the groups G5T100, G5T500, G3T10, and G3T100 compared to the group G5T0. Finally, co-supplementation of tris-based extender having 3% glycerol with 60 mM trehalose and 10 µM taxifolin hydrate in cryopreservation extender may be recommended to improve the quality of post-thawed ram spermatozoa. However, further in vivo and in vitro studies are suggested to evaluate fertility rates of frozen-thawed ram spermatozoa co-supplemented with trehalose and taxifolin hydrate.

Cryoprotectants are known to have protective effects against cryodamage to spermatozoa. In this study, the cryoprotective effects of two cryoprotectants (glycerol, ethylene glycol) and cryoprotectants/trehalose combinations on frozen-thawed ram spermatozoa were investigated at the ultrastructural level. For this purpose, ejaculates collected from Konya Merino rams were pooled and diluted with a tris-based extender containing additives, including 5% glycerol, 3% glycerol +60 mM trehalose, 1.5% glycerol +100 mM trehalose, 5% ethylene glycol, 3% ethylene glycol +60 mM trehalose, and 1.5% ethylene glycol +100 mM trehalose. They were all cooled to 5°C and then frozen in 0.25 mL French straws in liquid nitrogen. The samples were thawed at 37°C and centrifuged to remove the diluents. Then, they were processed using a scanning transmission electron microscope. In the statistical analysis, the number of ultrastructurally cryodamaged and intact spermatozoa were counted in longitudinal and transverse ultrathin sections in all groups by electron microscopic examination. The amount of intact spermatozoa in the groups containing 5% ethylene glycol and 1.5% ethylene glycol +100 mM trehalose was found to be higher than other groups (p < 0.05). As a result, it was suggested that the groups of 5% ethylene glycol and 1.5% ethylene glycol +100 mM trehalose provided the highest protection for the ultrastructural morphology of frozen-thawed Konya Merino ram spermatozoa among the groups.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of embryo quality and developmental stages on pregnancy rate in beef heifer recipients. The present study used 168 Simmental breed cows as donors, and 618 beef cattle breed heifers as recipients. The quality and developmental stages of the collected embryos were evaluated according to the criteria specified by the International Embryo Technology Society. Accordingly, the embryos in the compact morula, early blastocyst, blastocyst, and expanded blastocyst stages that were of Code I (excellent) and Code II (good) quality levels were transferred as fresh embryos to the recipient heifers. Prior to the transfer, the recipients were synchronized using the Ovsynch protocol, and the embryos obtained were transferred to 618 beef heifers. Pregnancy examinations were performed on days 30 and 60. On day 30, the pregnancy rates with Code I and Code II embryos were determined as 44.15% and 32.58%, respectively. According to the developmental stages, the pregnancy rates with Code I quality compact morula, early blastocyst, blastocyst, and expanded blastocyst were determined as 44.64%, 45.67%, 45.83%, and 33.33%, respectively. The rates of pregnancy with Code II quality compact morula, early blastocyst, and blastocyst were determined as 32.03%, 32.14%, and 50.0%, respectively. In conclusion, the pregnancy rates with Code I quality embryos were found to be higher compared with Code II embryos (P < 0.05). It was also determined that the embryonic developmental stages had no effect on the pregnancy rate (P > 0.05).

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of different concentrations of two different cryoprotectants (glycerol, G and ethylene glycol, EG) and trehalose (T), added to the semen extender, on post-thaw ram sperm parameters. Ejaculates, collected from 6 Merino rams, were pooled and evaluated at 37 °C. The pooled samples were divided into six equal aliquots, and diluted in Tris-based extenders containing 5% G, 3% G + 60 Mm T, 1.5% G + 100 Mm T, 5% EG, 3% EG + 60 mM T, and 1.5% EG + 100 Mm T. Subsequently, the samples were cooled to 5 °C, frozen in 0.25-ml French straws, and stored in liquid nitrogen (LN2). Frozen samples were thawed individually, at 37 °C for 25 s in a water bath, for evaluation. Sperm motility was assessed using a phase-contrast microscope with a warm stage maintained at 37 °C. Acrosome integrity (FITC/PNA-PI), sperm viability (SYBR-14/PI), mitochondrial activity (JC-1/PI), DNA damage (COMET assay) and DNA fragmentation (TUNEL test) were determined. The group of samples diluted in an extender containing 5% of glycerol (Group 5% G) displayed higher percentages of subjective motility, viability and mitochondrial activity of sperm, compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). On the other hand, Group 3% G + 60 mM T yielded the second-best results for subjective motility, viability and mitochondrial activity of sperm, when compared to the other groups. The post-thaw sperm parameters of Group 3% G + 60 Mm T did not show any statistically significant difference from those of Group 5% G. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups for acrosome integrity (P > 0.05). The results of the COMET assay showed that the use of low concentrations of cryoprotectants in combination with trehalose decreased sperm DNA damage. Accordingly, Group 1.5% G + 100 mM T and Group 3% EG + 60 mM T benefited from a significantly stronger cryoprotective effect on DNA integrity, in comparison to Group 5% G (P < 0.05). According to the results of the TUNEL test, the combined use of low concentrations of cryoprotectants with trehalose decreased sperm DNA damage, when compared to the use of 5% glycerol, but this difference was statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). In conclusion, G and EG concentrations can be reduced by adding various amounts of T (60 mM, 100 mM) to the semen extender. The addition of 5% of glycerol and 3% G + 60 mM T to the semen extender did not yield statistically different post-thaw sperm parameters, when compared for protection against cryoinjury. Post-thaw sperm parameters can be improved by the supplementation of the semen extender with 3% G + 60 mM T. Thus, we recommend the use of freezing extenders containing low cryoprotectant concentrations (3% G) combined with trehalose to avoid the high level of toxic and osmotic damage caused by 5% G.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the transfer side, transfer location, cervix transfer score, type and diameter of corpus luteum (CL) during embryo transfer on pregnancy rates in beef heifers. Progesterone-based synchronization and superovulation protocol were applied to Simmental cows used as donors (n = 168). Uterine flushings were performed on day 7 following artificial insemination. Obtained Code I (excellent or good) and II (fair) quality embryos were transferred to recipient beef heifers (n = 561). During embryo transfer, side of transfer (right or left), transfer location (the cranial or middle third of uterine horn), cervix transfer score (easy, moderate or difficult) and type (CLa, CLb and CLc) and diameter of CL were determined. Pregnancy rates following the transfer of Code I and II embryos were 44.66% and 33.07%, respectively (p < .05). The rates of pregnancy after transfers to the right and left uterine horn were 37% and 42.2%, respectively (p > .05). The pregnancy rates were 41.2%, 34.9% and 30.3% for cervix transfer scores as easy, moderate and difficult, respectively (p > .05). Pregnancy rates after transfer to the cranial third and middle third were 41.06% and 29.67%, respectively (p < .05). According to types of CL, pregnancy rates were 31.7%, 40.4% and 45.3% for CLa, CLb and CLc, respectively (p < .05). Moreover, it was found that as the CL diameter increased, the pregnancy rates increased. As a result, it was concluded that there was no effect of side of transfer and cervix transfer score, but embryo quality, transfer location, type and diameter of CL had significant effects on the pregnancy rate during embryo transfer in beef heifers.

The most significant focal points of the embryo transfer technology are as follows: the selection of donors, the response of the selected donor to the superovulation protocol and the obtained number of the transferable embryos. For this purpose, it is suggested that donor selection can be done by anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, and embryo production is evaluated. AMH is secreted by the granulosa cells of primordial, pre-antral and antral follicles below 4 mm in the ovary, independent of FSH. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum AMH levels and the number of corpus luteum (CL), total embryos and transferable embryos that were shaped after a uniform superovulation protocol. For this reason, 48 Simmental cows, which were located at General Directory of Agricultural Enterprises (region, province, etc. instead of the general directorate), were used as donors for the embryo transfer. Blood samples were taken at random, regardless of the stage of animal's sexual cycle. AMH levels were measured by enzyme-linked fluorescent assay (ELFA) method of the miniVIDAS® (bioMérieux SA) using AMH Bovine Test Kit. According to the statistical analyses of the obtained data, AMH levels were positively correlated with CL and total embryos (p < .05). No significant correlations between AMH and transferable embryos were approved (p > .05). It was also determined that each 200 pg/ml increase in serum AMH level resulted in one increase in CL number. Overall, considering the positive correlation between AMH level and the obtained number of CL and total embryos after a superovulation treatment, it was concluded that measuring blood AMH level prior to any further costly implementation may be an effective method in donor selection.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of ellagic acid and ebselen on sperm and oxidative stress parameters during liquid preservation of ram semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, sixty ejaculates from six mature Merino rams were used. In experiment 1, the ejaculates were diluted in base extender contained ellagic acid at 0 (control), 0.5, 1, and 2 mM. In experiment 2, ebselen at 0 (control), 10, 20, and 40 µM were added to the extender. Sperm motility, viability, mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA integrity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), the antioxidant potential (AOP), and total glutathione (tGSH) were evaluated at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours of preservation. RESULTS: Supplementation of ellagic acid at 1 and 2 mM resulted in higher sperm motility and viability at 0 hours of storage. Ellagic acid at 2 mM led to higher motility and viability compared to controls after 0, 24, and 48 hours of preservation and increased AOP after 24 and 72 hours. Higher tGSH was at 1 mM ellagic acid, compared to control after 72 hours. Addition of ebselen at a concentration of 40 µM increased motility at 24 and 48 hours and 10 µM produced the same effect after 48 and 72 hours of storage as well as higher viability, compared to the controls after 0 hours of storage. Sperm DNA integrity was significantly improved after 24, 48, and 72 hours with the addition of ebselen at 10 µM, and after 72 hours at 40 µM. Addition of 40 mM ebselen also reduced the LPO levels after 24 hours of storage compared to the controls. CONCLUSION: The results showed that supplementation of ellagic acid and ebselen in semen extender has a potential effect on sperm and oxidative stress parameters during liquid preservation of ram semen.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), a method of artificial intelligence method, provide effective predictive models for complex processes. Three independent ANN models trained with back-propagation algorithm were developed to predict effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS) and aeration tank mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations of the Ankara central wastewater treatment plant. The appropriate architecture of ANN models was determined through several steps of training and testing of the models. ANN models yielded satisfactory predictions. Results of the root mean square error, mean absolute error and mean absolute percentage error were 3.23, 2.41 mg/L and 5.03% for COD; 1.59, 1.21 mg/L and 17.10% for SS; 52.51, 44.91 mg/L and 3.77% for MLSS, respectively, indicating that the developed model could be efficiently used. The results overall also confirm that ANN modelling approach may have a great implementation potential for simulation, precise performance prediction and process control of wastewater treatment plants.

This paper describes activation of pine cone with Fenton reagent and determines the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. Changes of the surface properties of adsorbent materials were determined by the FT-IR and SEM analysis after activation of pine cone. The effect of Fe(2+)/H(2)O(2) ratio, ORP, pH and contact time were determined. Different adsorption isotherms were also obtained using concentrations of heavy metal ions ranging from 0.1 to 150mgL(-1). The adsorption process follows pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The study discusses thermodynamic parameters, including changes in Gibbs free energy, entropy, and enthalpy, for the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) on activated cone, and revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic under natural conditions. The maximum removal efficiencies were obtained as 91% and 89% at pH 7 with 90 and 105-min contact time for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively.

The maximum removal efficiency obtained was 97% at pH 7 and with a 90-min contact time (for 35 mg L(-1) initial concentration and a 2.5 g L(-1) solid-to-liquid ratio).

This paper describes the adsorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions by oak (Quercus coccifera) sawdust modified by means of HCl treatment. Our study tested the removal of three heavy metals: Cu, Ni, and Cr. The optimum shaking speed, adsorbent mass, contact time, and pH were determined, and adsorption isotherms were obtained using concentrations of the metal ions ranging from 0.1 to 100mgL(-1). The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics, as well as Langmuir and D-R adsorption isotherms. The paper discusses the thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption (the Gibbs free energy, entropy, and enthalpy). Our results demonstrate that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic under natural conditions. The maximum removal efficiencies were 93% for Cu(II) at pH 4, 82% for Ni(II) at pH 8, and 84% for Cr(VI) at pH 3.
