RESUMO

All-dielectric metamaterials conforming to an optical reflectionless potential (ORP) offer broadband, omni-directional suppression of reflection. Though they are predicted to possess broadband negative group velocity dispersion (GVD), ultrashort pulse propagation through such materials has not been studied so far, to the best of our knowledge. In this work, we demonstrate negative GVD and group delay dispersion over broadband covering visible to near-infrared wavelengths. We investigate the role of ORP in supercontinuum generation (SC), which is observed to be polarization independent. The negative GVD in ORPs is interesting for pulse compression, phase compensation, dispersion engineering, and controlled SC generation.

Increasing use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in myriad applications including electronics, medicines and agriculture has led to serious concerns regarding its release to plant ecosystems. Over the years, numerous studies have demonstrated the toxic impact of AgNPs in a variety of cell and tissue systems involved in vegetative growth across a wide range of plant species. However, assessing their impact on haploid phase of plant life cycle was restricted only to a study with Kiwifruit. In this study, in vitro pollen performance of Peltophorum pterocarpum at two endpoints i.e., germination and tube growth was assessed to evaluate the impact of nanoparticulate or ionic form of silver. Increasing concentrations of AgNO3/AgNPs significantly reduced the pollen germination and retarded the tube growth. The EC 50 values indicated a more potent toxic effect of AgNPs than AgNO3 on pollen germination as well as tube growth. Impairment of pollen performance was more pronounced at the stage of emergence of pollen tube. Extensive alterations in the muri and lumen of exine as revealed through SEM analysis and subsequent blockage of germpore might disrupt the emergence of pollen tube. The dynamics of pollen tube growth was analyzed with polynomial models of different degrees. A high degree of polynomial, the quintic model was able to approximate the real data points with highest coefficient of determination and smallest RMSE, compared to other models. An oscillating pattern of tube growth was portrayed with the passage of time in all the treatments that fits well with the established mechanistic oscillatory model of tube growth. It appears that exposure to AgNO3/AgNPs inhibited pollen germination and retarded tube growth without affecting the oscillatory behavior of tip-growth.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of biological cells can reveal clinically important information about cells' composition, including their normal or cancerous status. The recently emerged diagnostic technique of spectral cytopathology (SCP) combines FTIR with multivariate statistical analysis to detect cell abnormalities, differentiate between cell types, and monitor disease progression. We demonstrate a new variant of SCP, a metasurface-enhanced infrared reflection spectroscopic cytopathology (MEIRSC) that utilises judiciously designed plasmonic metasurfaces to localize and enhance the evanescent field near the cell's membrane, and to carry out spectroscopic interrogations of the cells attached to the metasurface using reflected infrared light. Our findings indicate that the MEIRSC approach enables us to differentiate between normal and cancerous human colon cells. The sensitivity of MEIRSC is such that a very small (about 50 nm deep) portion of the cell can yield valuable diagnostic information.

The present study demonstrates the influence of LED irradiance of various wavelengths on shoot regeneration, biomass accumulation, photosynthetic pigment contents, and antioxidant potentials of Swertia chirata - a critically endangered medicinal plant. Mixed treatment of blue (BL) and red LEDs (RL) in equal proportion (1:1) significantly improved the shoot regeneration response. A machine vision system was developed to assess the shoot regeneration potential under different lighting treatments. Regenerated shoots exposed under BL:RL (1:1) exhibited higher biomass accumulation and canopy development compared to other lighting treatments. Improved canopy growth was evident from the increase in the area, major axis, minor axis, convex area, equivalent diameter and perimeter of regenerated shoot clusters. A higher correlation of dry weight (DW) was noted with the image feature, weighted density (WD) than the fresh weight (FW) in all the LED treated cultures. The significant correlation between DW and WD implies that the image feature WD can be adopted as a non-invasive approach for measuring biomass accumulation as well as detecting hyperhydricity. The developed machine vision approach provides a new direction in the evaluation of shoot organogenesis that displayed features including both shoot multiplication and canopy development. Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of the regenerated shoots were found to be higher under BL:RL (1:1) than the other treatments. Supplementation of RL led to a reduction in the pigment contents. Spectral quality of lights also significantly influenced the accumulation of total phenolics, flavonoids and flavonols. Cultures exposed under BL exhibited the maximum accumulation of polyphenols. A similar effect of spectral quality was observed with the antioxidant capacity and reducing power potential of leaf extract. The findings demonstrate the ability of LEDs in inducing shoot regeneration as well as accumulation of phenolic antioxidants and suggest that the proportion of blue and red LEDs is an important factor in achieving the optimum response.

Chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles (chem-AgNPs) have been assessed extensively to show adverse effects on plant cells but the role of biologically synthesized nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) at lower concentrations and their toxicological impact on plant cells have not been sufficiently studied. In this study, bio-AgNPs were prepared using aqueous leaf extracts of Swertia chirata. This AgNPs showed absorption peak at 440nm of the visible spectrum. TEM analysis revealed that the average size of AgNPs were 20nm and mainly spherical in shape. AFM topographic images depicted the three dimensional aspects of AgNPs. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature. FTIR spectrum of the AgNPs revealed the possible biomolecules involved in bioreduction and efficient stabilization of the particles. Low-dose of bio-AgNPs concentrations (5, 10 and 20µgml-1) were used for toxicity studies on Allium cepa. The studies revealed that various chromosomal aberrations were induced in both mitotic and meiotic cells of Allium cepa even at lower concentrations of bio-AgNPs. Abnormalities in post meiotic products were also observed. Both mitotic and meiotic indexes decreased with increasing concentrations of bio-AgNPs in the treated cells. These findings implied that low dose bio-AgNPs can induce significant clastogenic effects on both meristematic and reproductive plant cells.

Open defecation is practised by over 600 million people in India and there is a strong political drive to eliminate this through the provision of on-site sanitation in rural areas. However, there are concerns that the subsequent leaching of excreta from subsurface storage could be adversely impacting underlying groundwater resources upon which rural populations are almost completely dependent for domestic water supply. We investigated this link in four villages undergoing sanitary interventions in Bihar State, India. A total of 150 supplies were sampled for thermotolerant (faecal) coliforms (TTC) and tryptophan-like fluorescence (TLF): an emerging real-time indicator of faecal contamination. Sanitary risk inspections were also performed at all sites, including whether a supply was located within 10 m of a toilet, the recommended minimum separation. Overall, 18% of water supplies contained TTCs, 91% of which were located within 10 m of a toilet, 58% had TLF above detection limit, and sanitary risk scores were high. Statistical analysis demonstrated TLF was an effective indicator of TTC presence-absence, with a possibility of TTCs only where TLF exceeded 0.4 µg/L dissolved tryptophan. Analysis also indicated proximity to a toilet was the only significant sanitary risk factor predicting TTC presence-absence and the most significant predictor of TLF. Faecal contamination was considered a result of individual water supply vulnerability rather than indicative of widespread leaching into the aquifer. Therefore, increasing faecal contamination of groundwater-derived potable supplies is inevitable across the country as uptake of on-site sanitation intensifies. Communities need to be aware of this link and implement suitable decentralised low-cost treatment of water prior to consumption and improve the construction and protection of new supplies.

The longitudinal and transverse beam shifts, namely, the Goos-Hänchen (GH) and the Spin-Hall (SH) shifts are usually observed at planar interfaces. It has recently been shown that the transverse SH shift may also arise due to scattering of plane waves. Here, we show that analogous in-plane (longitudinal) shifts also exist in the scattering of plane waves from micro/nano systems. We study both the GH and the SH shifts in plasmonic metal nanoparticles/nanostructures and dielectric micro-particles employing a unified framework that utilizes the transverse components of the Poynting vector of the scattered wave. The results demonstrate that the interference of neighboring resonance modes in plasmonic nanostructures (e.g., electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in metal spheres) leads to great enhancement of the GH shift in scattering from such systems. We also unravel interesting correlations between these shifts with the polarimetry parameters, diattenuation and retardance.

We study theoretically a parity-time (PT)-symmetric, saturable, balanced gain-loss system in a ring-cavity configuration. The saturable gain and loss are modeled by a two-level medium with or without population inversion. We show that the specifics of the spectral singularity can be fully controlled by the cavity and the atomic detuning parameters. The theory is based on the mean-field approximation, as in the standard theory of optical bistability. Further, in the linear regime we demonstrate the regularization of the singularity in detuned systems, while larger input power levels are shown to be adequate to limit the infinite growth in absence of detunings.

In this Letter, we study the excitation of gap solitons under the conditions of coherent perfect absorption. Our system consists of a symmetric periodic structure with alternating Kerr nonlinear and linear layers illuminated from both ends. We show near-total transfer of incident light energy into the gap solitons resulting in null scattering. We also report on the nonlinear super-scattering states. Both the exact and the approximate results, which show good agreement based on nonlinear characteristic matrix methods, are presented.

We study coherent perfect absorption (CPA) of light in a Kerr nonlinear metal-dielectric composite medium, illuminated from the opposite ends. Elementary symmetry considerations reveal that equality of the incident light intensities is a prerequisite to ensure CPA in both linear and nonlinear systems for specific system parameters. We also derive the sufficient conditions for having CPA. We further show that, while CPA in a linear system is insensitive to the incident power level, in a nonlinear system CPA can be achieved only for discrete intensities with interesting hysteretic responses. Our unified formulation of CPA and waveguiding identifies them as opposite scattering phenomena. We further investigate light-induced CPA in on-resonant and off-resonant systems.

The spin orbit interactions (SOI) of light mediated by single scattering from plasmon resonant metal nanoparticles (nanorods and nanospheres) are investigated using Jones and Mueller matrix polarimetry formalism. The effect of neighboring resonances in plasmonic nanostructures (e.g., orthogonal electric dipolar modes in rods or electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in spheres) on the individual SOI effects are analyzed and interpreted via the Mueller matrix-derived polarimetry characteristics, namely, diattenuation d and retardance δ. The results clearly reveal that each of these can be controllably tuned and enhanced by exploiting the interference of neighboring modes.

We study a critically coupled system [Opt. Lett. 32, 1483 (2007)] with a Kerr nonlinear spacer layer. Nonlinearity is shown to inhibit null scattering in a critically coupled system at low powers. However, a system detuned from critical coupling can exhibit near-complete suppression of scattering by means of nonlinearity-induced changes in refractive index. Our studies reveal clearly an important aspect of critical coupling as a delicate balance in both the amplitude and the phase relations, while a nonlinear resonance in dispersive bistability concerns only the phase.

The construction, alignment, and performance of a setup for broadband wide-angle dispersion measurements, with emphasis on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements, are presented in comprehensive detail. In contrast with most SPR instruments working with a monochromatic source, this setup takes advantage of a broadband∕white light source and has full capability for automated angle vs. wavelength dispersion measurements for any arbitrary nanostructure array. A cylindrical prism is used rather than a triangular one in order to mitigate refraction induced effects and allow for such measurements. Although seemingly simple, this instrument requires use of many non-trivial methods in order to achieve proper alignment over all angles of incidence. Here we describe the alignment procedure for such a setup, the pitfalls introduced from the finite beam width incident onto the cylindrical prism, and deviations in the reflected∕transmitted beam resulting from the finite thickness of the sample substrate. We address every one of these issues and provide experimental evidences on the success of this instrument and the alignment procedure used.

We show bending of light on the same side of the normal in a free-standing corrugated metal film under bidirectional illumination. Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) is exploited to suppress the specular zeroth order leading to effective back-bending of light into the "-1" order, while the "+1" order is resonant with the surface mode. The effect is shown to be phase sensitive, yielding CPA and superscattering in the same geometry.

In this study, lyophilized crude and methanolic extracts of aloe gel from different germplasms (S24, RM, TN, OR, and RJN) of Aloe vera L. were tested for their ultraviolet (UV) opacity potential. UV absorption profiles, sun protection factor (SPF), and percentage blocking of UVA and UVB were considered to test UV opacity potential. Both the extracts showed UV absorption and followed the same path in the wavelength range of 250-400 nm in all the germplasms. Methanolic extract showed a stronger absorptivity than the crude lyophilized extract. Among the tested germplasms, maximum UV opacity property with a SPF of 9.97% and 79.12% UVB blocking was obtained with RJN, whereas a poor response was evident in TN with a SPF of 1.37% and 28.5% UVB blocking at 4 mg/ml methanolic extract. To our knowledge the present work for the first time documents UV opacity properties of A. vera L. gel and opens up new vistas in Aloe gel characterization.

We present first ever analytical solutions for shape-preserving pulses in a Kerr nonlinear two-mode fiber doped with 3-level ? atoms. The two modes are near-resonant with the two transitions of the atomic system. We show the existence of quasi-stable coupled bright-dark pairs if the group velocity dispersion has opposite signs at the two mode frequencies. We demonstrate the remarkable possibility allowed by the fiber dispersion for the existence of a new class of solutions for unequal coupling constants for the two modes. We present the conditions for existence and the analytical form of these solutions in presence of atomic detuning. We confirm numerically the analytical solutions for the spatio-temporal evolution of coupled solitary waves.

RESUMO

It is shown that broad-band antireflection coatings with extra large angular range can be designed based on the concept of reflectionless potentials. Numerical calculations for inhomogeneous films with or without substrate demonstrate the above capabilities for both TE and TM polarizations. The design possibilities are infinite and the underlying concept does not rely on standard use of quarter wave plates. Suitable inhomogeneous layers on both sides of a lossless thin dielectric film can thus render it invisible.

A high-frequency plantlet regeneration protocol was developed for black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) through cyclic secondary somatic embryogenesis. Secondary embryos formed from the radicular end of the primary somatic embryos which were originally derived from micropylar tissues of germinating seeds on growth regulator-free SH medium in the absence of light. The process of secondary embryogenesis continued in a cyclic manner from the root pole of newly formed embryos resulting in clumps of somatic embryos. Strength of the medium and sucrose concentration influenced the process of secondary embryogenesis and fresh weight of somatic embryo clumps. Full-strength SH medium supplemented with 1.5% sucrose produced significantly higher fresh weight and numbers of secondary somatic embryos while 3.0 and 4.5% sucrose in the medium favored further development of proliferated embryos into plantlets. Ontogeny of secondary embryos was established by histological analysis. Secondary embryogenic potential was influenced by the developmental stage of the explanted somatic embryo and stages up to "torpedo" were more suitable. A single-flask system was standardized for proliferation, maturation, germination and conversion of secondary somatic embryos in suspension cultures. The system of cyclic secondary somatic embryogenesis in black pepper described here represents a permanent source of embryogenic material that can be used for genetic manipulations of this crop species.

RESUMO

A 31-year-old man presented with idiopathic membranous obstruction of the suprahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) and was treated by balloon dilation and placement of a Wallstent. The patient improved markedly. However, he developed obstruction of the hepatic vein outflow secondary to neointima formation over the stent that covered the hepatic vein ostia. The patient died of liver failure and septicemia. We believe that this is the first report of such a serious complication.
