RESUMO

AIM: Assessment of the efficacy of radiation therapy for symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of 19 patients who were treated from 1969 to 1988 were retrospectively analyzed. Radiation treatment was given at 2 Gy per fraction to 20 Gy (n = 2), 30 Gy (n = 11), or 40 Gy (n = 6). Improvement of symptoms was chosen to determine the efficacy of the treatment. In addition the lesions were controlled radiographically. RESULTS: Symptomatic improvement was achieved in 17 of 19 patients, remission was complete in 7 patients. No dose-response relationship was observed. The median time to improvement of symptoms was 3 months. The radiographic controls did not correlate with the clinical course. CONCLUSIONS: Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for symptomatic vertebral hemangiomas. The aim of the treatment is to ameliorate clinical symptoms, radiographic improvement is of minor importance.

RESUMO

Malignant neoplasias in childhood generally are an increased risk for the patient to fall ill with a second tumor. Second tumors in former irradiation field are seldom, but are acknowledged radiogenically if histology is different to that of the first tumor and a sufficiently long period is between the two tumors. A patient is represented who had been operated and irradiated because of an adenosarcoma of the kidney at the age of seven and who has fallen ill with a neurogenic sarcoma in irradiation area more than 30 years later. The same patient had to suffer from radiogenic retardation during differentiation of lumbar apparatus of attitude and locomotion and on the other hand he became father of a healthy daughter at the age of 32.

RESUMO

A system for thermoradiotherapy of cervical carcinoma is presented, that allows combination of high-dosed afterloading short-time therapy by means of the technique being available in the GDR (DEKATRON) with the equipment CALOTHERM, constructed in Institut M. v. Ardenne. The first clinical experiences (3 patients) show, that the expected target temperature of 42 degrees C at the cervix was reached by all means after 6 minutes at least. Complications involved by hyperthermia did not appear with it, so that the continuation of this therapy is planned in form of a phase-I-study.
