RESUMO

Thirty of 1720 temporal bones from the Wittmaack's Collection contain nonoperated acoustic neuromas, 22 of them large tumors. Histologically, each tumor has to be considered as an individual. Most of the tumors show a mixture of Antoni type A and B. Tumor vascularization is pronounced in half the cases. Vessels of the internal acoustic meatus are found in all cases. Protein contents of the perilymphatic spaces is medium to pronounced in 23 of 30 cases in comparison to the small protein contents of the healthy side. Ganglion geniculi is invaded in 11 cases (9 von Recklinghausen's disease), Ganglion Scarpae in 26 cases (9 von Recklinghausen's disease), and Ganglion spirale in 9 cases (7 von Recklinghausen's disease). Cochlear and vestibular nerve fibers within the internal auditory meatus were affected by the tumor in 28 of 30 cases, the facial nerve only in 11 cases, among them 9 cases of von Recklinghausen's disease. Twenty-six of 30 schwannomas have a portion within the cribriform area of the cochlea fundus, which explains the limitation to radical tumor surgery without damage of the cochlear nerve. These histological findings explain the site of damage of hearing to expand between the cochlea to the auditory brain stem nuclei, and support the audiological experience that a correlation of "acoustic neuroma" and "retrocochlear lesion" is often not correct.

RESUMO

The advantages of xeroradiography in radiology of the soft parts are emphasized. The technique in tomography of the throat is described. Typical benign diseases of the throat like acute or chronic inflammation, edema, pareses of the vocal cords and injuries are demonstrated on xerotomograms and discussed. Detail of the structures of the throat is better seen in xeroradiographic tomograms than in Röntgentomograms.

RESUMO

Results of 92 xerotomographies of the upper air-ways are demonstrated on selected cases of benign and malignant neoplasms. In tomography of the throat we prefer the positive type of development. Xerography provides a good insight into site and size of tumors in larynx and pharynx.

RESUMO

Up to now little is known about the anatomy and histology and especially about the germinative zones of the growing nasal septum. We totally removed 18 septa of children between 0 and 10 years immediately after death. After photographical documentation these septa were studied histologically and microadiographically. It was found that at birth the connection between the cartilaginous septum and vomer only consists of a small and very loose layer of connective tissues. During the first year of life several ossification areas appear between vomer and cartilage in the dorsal part of the septum. An enchondral ossification zone at the rostrum sphenoidale was regularly seen in the neonatal septum, but disappears soon after birth. The development of the perpendicular plate starts from multiple ossification centersregularlytobefoundinthedorso-cranialpartoftheneonatalseptum. The perpendicular plate is the fastest growing part of the septum and even in the tenth year of life still shows an enchondral ossification zone around its border. The shape and the size ofthe septum changes most during the first six years; subsequently septal growth slows down markedly. As the enchondral ossification zone resembles an epiphysis cartilage, it is assumed thatlesions in this area may lead to growth disturbances of the inner and outer nose. It is therefore emphasized that, rgarding rhinoplasty in children, this ossification zone should be preserved by the surgeon.
