RESUMO

Shulgan-Tash (also known as Kapova) cave located on the western slope of the Ural Mountains (Russia) is the easternmost European cave art monument of late Palaeolithic age. Radiocarbon dates from cultural layers in the cave suggest an age of about 16.3 to 19.6 ka (cal BP), but dates directly on the paintings were not obtained. In order to constrain the age of this art using an independent method, we performed detailed 230Th-U dating of calcite flowstone underlying and overgrowing the paintings at 22 sites in three halls of the cave. The youngest age for the underlying calcite (i.e., the maximum age of the cave art) is 36.4 ± 0.1 ka, and the oldest overlying calcite (constraining the minimum age of the cave art) is 14.5 ± 0.04 ka. The ca. 21.9 ka-long hiatus in calcite deposition during which the paintings were made is attributed to regional permafrost conditions and sub-zero temperatures inside the cave during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2. This is supported by samples of cryogenic cave calcite, which document seven episodes of freezing and thawing of permafrost associated with stadials and interstadials of MIS 3, respectively.

RESUMO

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "Closer monetary union and product market integration in emerging economies: Evidence from the Common Monetary Area in Southern Africa" (M. A. Nchake, L. Edwards, N. Rankin, 2017) [1]. This article describes the monthly retail product prices used in the compilation of the consumer price index of Lesotho, South Africa and Botswana, and collected by the statistical offices in the respective countries. The data are provided at the product level and vary across cities and across time. Each individual product has information on the date (month and year), city, product and unit codes, units of measurements and, in some cases, brand name of that product. The data is made publicly available to enable replication analysis or to extend on the existing results.

RESUMO

The Holocene variability in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) based on speleothem δ18O records has inconsistencies in timing, duration, and expression of millennial-scale events among nearby regions, and even within the same cave. Here, we present another stalagmite δ18O record with multi-decadal time resolution from the temperate Korean Peninsula (KP) for the last 5500 years in order to compare with Holocene millennial-scale EASM events from Southeast Asia. Based on our new stalagmite δ18O record, millennial-scale events since the mid-Holocene were successfully identified in the KP, representing a noticeable cyclic pattern with a periodicity of around 1000 years. We propose that the Holocene millennial-scale events are common hydroclimatic phenomena at least in the East Asian monsoon system. Meanwhile, the shorter periodicity of millennial-scale events than that of the North Atlantic region is likely to decouple the EASM system from the North Atlantic climate system. This observation suggests that weak EASM and North Atlantic Bond events may have been induced independently by direct solar activity (and then possible feedback) and ocean-ice sheet dynamics, respectively, rather than simple propagation from the North Atlantic to the EASM regions.

RESUMO

Discussion and voting at OMERACT 9 confirmed 5 essential domains for outcomes of acute gout: pain, joint swelling, joint tenderness, patient global assessment and activity limitations. For studies in chronic gout 7 essential domains are: serum urate, acute gout attacks, tophus burden, health-related quality of life, activity limitations, pain, and patient global assessment. Implications of patient perspectives, discretionary domains for specific studies, measurement instruments and a possible responder index are under study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between self-reported quality of life and disability and disease severity was evaluated in subjects with treatment-failure gout (n = 110) in a prospective, 52-week, observational study. METHODS: Subjects had symptomatic crystal-proven gout of at least 2 years' duration and intolerance or refractoriness to conventional urate-lowering therapy. Serum uric acid (sUA) concentration, swollen and tender joint counts, frequency and severity of gout flares, tophus assessments, comorbidities, and patient-reported outcomes data [Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36), Health Assessment Questionnaire-Damage Index] were collected. Analyses included correlations of patient-reported outcomes with clinical variables and changes in clinical status. RESULTS: Mean age of study subjects was 59 years. Mean scores on SF-36 physical functioning subscales were 34.2-46.8, analogous to persons aged >or= 75 years in the general population. Subjects with more severe gout at baseline had worse health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in all areas (p < 0.02 for all measures), compared to patients with mild-moderate disease. Number of flares reported in past year, number of tender joints, swollen joints, and tophi correlated significantly with some or all HRQOL and disability measures. sUA was not significantly correlated with any HRQOL or disability measure. Subjects with comorbidities experienced worse physical, but not mental, functioning. CONCLUSION: Severe gout is associated with poor HRQOL and disability, especially for patients who experience more gout flares and have a greater number of involved joints. Subject perceptions of gout-related functioning and pain severity appear to be highly sensitive indicators of HRQOL and disability.

RESUMO

Gout provides some unique challenges in classification and measurement of outcomes. Our aim was to evaluate criteria for classification and to develop and validate optimal instruments to measure outcomes for acute and chronic gout. A planning committee and interested attendees met to propose classification criteria and domains for outcomes. Seven of the current American Rheumatism Association preliminary criteria for classification were proposed as the best current criteria for acute gouty arthritis, pending further studies. The presence of gout is best established by crystal identification, although this technique has limitations. Five domains for acute gout outcomes and 9 for chronic gout were identified along with proposed instruments for testing and validation. The unique problems of gout evaluation can and will be addressed.
