RESUMO

The development and introduction into clinical practice of non-pharmacological methods for the prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension is a primary objective of modern physical therapy, especially as regards the neurotropic influences. This article was designed to report the results of the investigation into the hypotensive effect of transcerebral magnetic therapy obtained during the treatment of 60 patients presenting with arterial hypertension. The study included the comparative examination of two randomly formed groups containing 30 patients each. The patients of the main group received transcerebral magnetic therapy (to the frontal region) while those in the group of comparison were given magnetotherapy at the collar region. The study has demonstrated that transcerebral magnetic therapy given to the patients of the main group was a more efficient treatment than magnetotherapy at the collar region since it produced a more pronounced hypotensive effect irrespective of the initial hemodynamic type.

RESUMO

The study covered functional peculiarities in 541 professional sportsmen. Mitral valve prolapse (in 132 examinees) appeared to be associated with reliably lower levels of reticulocytes, leucocytes, lymphocytes CD4+, immunoglobulines G, magnesium, and higher cortisol level, in comparison with the sportsmen having no mitral valve prolapse. The athletes with mitral valve prolapse demonstrated more frequent changes in ECG, reliably lower performance in treadmill test, slower recovery of heart rate after exertion is over.

RESUMO

Assessment of arterial stiffness for revealing vascular modification in hypertensive patients seems to be an actual problem in clinical practice. 377 patients with arterial hypertension and 232 nonhypertensive subjects were included in the research. The noninvasive technique of investigation of pulse wave velocity (PWV) was used. The reference values of carotid-femoral and carotid-radial PWV in relation of age and gender in nonhypertensive subjects and hypertensive population are described. Dependence of PWV on different clinical markers are shown. Correlations between PWV and left ventricular hypertrophy, PWV and carotid artery intima-media thickness are introduced. Therefore noninvasive technique of assessment of large and medium arterial stiffness can be used for separating patients with vascular modification from general population.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of laser therapy included into the treatment of pneumonia in the elderly. A follow-up included the analysis of their clinical status and external respiratory function, pulmonary blood flow, and immunological parameters in 2 matched groups of pneumonia patients aged 60 to 72 years. Low-intensity laser therapy (transcutaneous sliding contact procedure) was used as part of routine treatment in one of the groups. The findings demonstrate that non-drug treatment had an undeniably positive impact. There was an earlier regress of clinical symptoms and a sound recovery of functional parameters. In the absence of side effects of this method, these data allow infrared laser therapy to be recommended for rehabilitation of elderly patients with pneumonia.

RESUMO

AIM: To study efficiency and safety of application of perindopril (prestarium) in patients with chronic cor pulmonale (CCP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The trial included 26 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated with CCP and cardiac failure of NYHA class II-III. The study group of 16 patients received perindopril 2-4 mg/day for 3 months. 10 controls received routine therapy. All the patients were examined before the treatment and 3 months after it using physical examination, echocardiography, Doppler echocardiography, 24-h Holter ECG monitoring, assessment of potassium and creatinine in the serum, quality of life. RESULTS: The treatment decreased functional class of cardiac failure and mean pulmonary arterial pressure, lowered malignant arrhythmia frequency, improved quality of life and intracardiac hemodynamics, inhibited right ventricular remodelling. CONCLUSION: Perindopril is well tolerated and safe efficient medicine in patients with decompensated CCP.

RESUMO

Appetitive and consummatory feeding behavior was shown to be initiated by stimulation of different loci. Feeding programs were different in their motor output frequency in P. corneus and L. stagnalis stagnalis. The maintenance of the feeding program was provided by sensory input. In contrast to the insect flight generator, the feeding neuronal program had no peripheral regulation system in freshwater snails, its feeding program being more autonomic from peripheral influences than the flight motor program in insects.

RESUMO

tRNA methylases were studied in the extreme thermophilic culture of Thermus flavus, strain 71. Like E. coli, the culture contained only those tRNA methylases which catalysed the formation of m1A and m7G. Mg2+, Ca2+ and Na+ ions activated tRNA methylases of Thermus flavus in the series Mg greater than Ca greater than Na while Mn2+ ions inhibited the enzyme. The activity of tRNA methylases was higher in T. flavus than in E. coli, and required less protein and time for exhaustive methylation of tRNA preparations. The overall activity of methylases in T. flavus at 70 degrees C was 5-6 times higher than at 40 degrees C; the elevation of temperature had different effect on various methylases: the activity of m1A methylase increased 13-fold whereas that of m7G methylase only twofold.

RESUMO

When Bacillus subtilis produces alpha-amylase in the course of continuous cultivation, it is difficult to maintain the activity at a constant level. This may be due to the formation of nonproductive mutants. Individual cells in the population have been analysed in the course of the continuous process. The composition of the population changes depending on time and the composition of the growth medium. Semisynthetic media cause selection of mutants which synthesize the enzyme at a low rate. In contrast, complex media which are more enriched in the sources of carbon and nitrogen induce accumulation of mutants with a high activity.

RESUMO

Obligate thermophilic acidophilic cultures of Bacillus acidocaldarius were isolated from hot springs and soil of the Kunashir Island (the Kuril Islands) and Southern Sakhalin; their optimum temperature of growth is 65 degrees C and pH is 3.3--4.0. It has been shown for the first time that these organisms can be isolated from springs with either acidic or neutral and weakly alkaline pH values.

RESUMO

A non-sporeforming gram-negative bacterium isolated from soils of Africa was shown to belong to the species Thermus ruber in its morphologo-cytological and physiologobiochemical properties. It differed from the Thermus ruber species described elsewhere (Loginova et al., 1975; Loginova and Egorova, 1975) only on colour: the former contained a bright-red pigment while the latter produced bright-orange pigments.

RESUMO

The nucleotide composition of DNA was determined in extreme thermophilic and obligate thermophilic nonsporeforming bacteria belonging to a new genus Thermus. The GC content (in mol%) in the DNA of exteme thermophilic bacteria varied from 65.3 to 70.8 per cent depending on the strain. The amount of GC (in mol% in the DNA of obligate thermophilic and extreme thermophilic bacteria of the Thermus genus was higher than that in the DNA of sporeforming obligate thermophilic Bac. coagulans. Bac. circulans and Bac. stearothermophilus.

RESUMO

The dynamics of alpha-amylase production by two strains of Bacillus subtilis (A32 and A32.6) was studied under periodic and continuous conditions of cultivation on a chemically defined medium and on a natural medium. In the periodic culture, the highest activity of the enzyme was found during the stationary growth phase. In the conditions of chemostat, as the dilution rate from 0.05 to 0.15 hr-1, the activity of amylase remained at the same, high level for a certain lapse of time and then decreased. The rate of the decrease of alpha-amylase activity depended on the dilution rate.

RESUMO

Extreme-thermophilic non-sporeforming bacteria belonging to the Thermus genus are widely distributed in hot springs (40-90 degrees C) of Tadzhikistan. Their content was highest (1.8-10(4)--6.0-10(4) cells per gram of ooze) in springs with the temperature of water of 50-60 degrees C, and decreased (to 8.0-10(2)--4.0-10(3) cells per gram of ooze) in springs with the same temperature of water but with a low content of ooze. The number of the cells was even less (5.0-10(2)--4.0-10(3) per gram of ooze) in the surface layers of heated soil, especially at a depth of 2 cm. The lowest number of the cells (0.5-4.0 cells per 1 ml) was found in water at the surface of soil, with the temperature of 96, 93, and 65 degrees C.
