RESUMO

The chemical and physical resemblance between selenium (Se) and sulfur (S) establishes that both these elements share common metabolic pathways in plants. The presence of isologous Se and S compounds indicates that these elements compete in biochemical processes that affect uptake, translocation and assimilation throughout plant development. Yet, minor but crucial differences in reactivity and other metabolic interactions infer that some biochemical processes involving Se may be excluded from those relating to S. This review examines the current understanding of physiological and biochemical relationships between S and Se metabolism by highlighting their similarities and differences in relation to uptake, transport and assimilation pathways as observed in Se hyperaccumulator and non-accumulator plant species. The exploitation of genetic resources used in bioengineering strategies of plants is illuminating the function of sulfate transporters and key enzymes of the S assimilatory pathway in relation to Se accumulation and final metabolic fate. These strategies are providing the basic framework by which to resolve questions relating to the essentiality of Se in plants and the mechanisms utilized by Se hyperaccumulators to circumvent toxicity. In addition, such approaches may assist in the future application of genetically engineered Se accumulating plants for environmental renewal and human health objectives.

RESUMO

The influences of gender, ethnicity, and sport of varsity athletes on their vitamin/mineral supplementation habits were examined. Subjects included 145 females and 266 males from 22 varsity teams; 80% were Caucasian; 12% African American; and 8% Combined-Other. Over half of the subjects took supplements. Males were more likely than females to give "too expensive" as a reason for not taking supplements, and "improve athletic performance" and "build muscle" as reasons for taking supplements. The most common supplement was multivitamins plus minerals. Females were more likely to take calcium and iron, and males vitamins B12 and A. African Americans were the most likely to take vitamin A. Males were more likely to get supplement information from nutritionists/dietitians and self, and females from family members or friends and physicians or pharmacists. Football players were more likely to get supplement information from nutritionists/dietitians, and males in other sports from coaches/trainers. There were some differences in vitamin/mineral supplement habits of the athletes by gender, ethnicity, and sport.

RESUMO

We report a case of successful attachment of a detached Descemet's membrane using an intracameral injection of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Three months after cataract surgery, a 77-year-old woman was seen for almost total detachment of Descemet's membrane. Surgical repair with a through-and-through mattress suture was unsuccessful. One month later, Descemet's membrane was apposed by injecting 0.25 ml of 100% SF6 into the anterior chamber. Six months later the central corneal thickness measured 0.48 mm, and Descemet's membrane was attached. We believe this to be the first reported case of successful attachment of Descemet's membrane using an intracameral injection of 100% SF6.

RESUMO

This study was designed to (i) characterize two new monoclonal antibodies that react with neoepitopes on fibrin(ogen) fragments D-dimer and D1 and (ii) compare the specificity of these antibodies with that of two commercially available 'D-dimer' ELISAs [Dimertest EIA (American Diagnostica, Inc.) and Asserachrom D-Di (Diagnostica Stago)] and also with an ELISA for fibrinolytic fragments containing the E domain complexed with a D (or D-dimer) moiety [Fibrinostika FbDP (Organon Teknika)]. All assays were in a capture (sandwich) ELISA format. Fibrin(ogen) degradation products were isolated in high yield by a novel method involving hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The results disclosed considerable differences in sensitivity and specificity for purified fibrinolytic fragments among all five ELISAs. Although the diagnostic utility of monitoring plasma fibrinolytic fragments is not questioned, our results provide a rational basis for understanding why mAb-based ELISAs for these analytes are not well correlated. If, as our data suggest, the D-dimer ELISAs are not actually measuring the same analytes, then interpretation of studies that determine D-dimer concentrations with different methods will be problematic and standardization of D-dimer measurements across assays will be impossible.

RESUMO

A retrospective study of 119 cases of fracture of the proximal phalanx is described. The short incomplete sagittal fracture (split pastern) was most common and carried a good prognosis for a return to racing following conservative treatment. Longer incomplete fractures also had a good prognosis but complete fractures, either through the lateral cortex of the proximal phalanx or through the bone into the proximal interphalangeal joint, required internal fixation. Careful assessment of these and comminuted fractures was essential before surgery was undertaken. Most comminuted fractures were treated with a view to the animal retiring to stud rather than racing again. Humane destruction was considered to be justifiable for such fractures in colts or geldings of no stud value or if the fracture was severely comminuted.

RESUMO

A total of 18 experimental pony and 136 commercial maiden, barren and foaling Thoroughbred mares in seasonal or lactation-related anoestrus were injected subcutaneously with 1 or 2 slow-release D,L-lactide-glycolide co-polymer implants impregnated with 0.9 or 1.8 mg of the potent GnRH analogue, ICI 118 630, to give a daily release of, respectively, 30 or 60 micrograms analogue for 28 days; 32 of the Thoroughbred mares were also given a daily oral dose of 27.5 mg allyl trenbolone for 5 days after injection of the implant. Thirteen pony (76%) and 120 Thoroughbred (88%) mares ovulated 3-18 days after treatment with ICI 118 630 and the additional treatment with allyl trenbolone did not significantly reduce the considerable variation in the interval between treatment with GnRH analogue and ovulation. Of 100 Thoroughbred mares mated during the GnRH analogue-induced oestrus, (70%) conceived. The results of this trial demonstrated that low-dose, slow-release formulations of GnRH agonists have considerable potential as a practical method of hastening renewed ovarian cyclicity in anoestrous mares.

RESUMO

Daily oral administration of 30 mg allyl trenbolone (Regumate) for 10 to 15 days to 61 barren, maiden and lactating Thoroughbred mares which were exhibiting either deep anoestrus, shallow anoestrus, prolonged spring oestrus or lactation anoestrus, resulted in 54 mares (88 per cent) showing oestrous behaviour within 8 days, and 51 mares (84 per cent) ovulating within 18 days, after the last dose of compound. Response rate was lowest in mares in deep anoestrus. Of the 38 Regumate-treated mares which were covered during the induced oestrus, 21 (55 per cent) conceived. The practical value of this form of progesterone withdrawal therapy as a method for hastening the onset of the breeding season in Thoroughbred mares is discussed.

RESUMO

An outbreak of contagious equine metritis occurred in Newmarket in 1977. This survey records the effect on fertility of 20 of the stallions which were infected. Swabbing of mares since then has detected 37 carrier mares harbouring the organism, most frequently in the clitoral area. This swabbing programme reduced the incidence of new cases in 1978 to 3 mares and 1 stallion.

RESUMO

Eighteen cases of fractures of the proximal sesamoid bones in Thoroughbred foals are described. Most of the fractures were in foals under 2 months old and all but one occurred in the forelegs. The bones commonly fractured when the foal galloped to exhaustion trying to keep up with its dam in the paddock. The types of fracture varied but a simple fracture of the medial sesamoid was most frequent and the majority were towards the base of the bone. Six foals sustained a fracture of more than one sesamoid bone and one foal fractured all 4 proximal sesamoid bones in its front legs. Treatment included box rest and the surgical removal of the separated piece of sesamoid bone. Only 3 of the foals treated have raced. One of these was treated surgically.
