Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common infection worldwide. The correlation between HCV and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is still mysterious. Therefore, the relationship between HCV and RCC was investigated. The study included 100 patients with RCC; 32 with HCV infection, and 68 without HCV infection. Expressions of viral proteins (NS3 and NS5A) were tested using an immune electron-microscope (IEM) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). IHC and quantitative real time-PCR investigated the presentation of human proteins TP53 and p21 genes. Transmission electron (TEM) detected viral-like particles in infected RCC tissues. The gene and protein expression of P53 was higher in HCV positive versus HCV negative patients and p21 was lower in HCV positive versus HCV negative in both tumor and normal tissue samples. Viral like particles were observed by TEM in the infected tumor and normal portion of the RCC tissues and the plasma samples. The IEM showed the depositions of NS3 and NS5A in infected renal tissues, while in noninfected samples, were not observed. The study hypothesizes that a correlation between HCV and RCC could exist through successfully detecting HCV-like particles, HCV proteins, and (p53 and p21) in RCC-infected patients.

Due to increasing concerns about environmental impact and toxicity, developing green and sustainable methods for nanoparticle synthesis is attracting significant interest. This work reports the successful green synthesis of silver (Ag), silver-titanium dioxide (Ag@TiO2), and silver-selenium dioxide (Ag@SeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) using Beta vulgaris L. extract. Characterization by XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDX confirmed the successful formation of uniformly distributed spherical NPs with controlled size (25 ± 4.9 nm) and desired elemental composition. All synthesized NPs and the B. vulgaris extract exhibited potent free radical scavenging activity, indicating significant antioxidant potential. However, Ag@SeO2 displayed lower hemocompatibility compared to other NPs, while Ag@SeO2 and the extract demonstrated reduced inflammation in a carrageenan-induced paw edema animal model. Interestingly, Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2 exhibited strong antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotia sclerotium, as evidenced by TEM and FTIR analyses. Generally, the findings suggest that B. vulgaris-derived NPs possess diverse biological activities with potential applications in various fields such as medicine and agriculture. Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2, in particular, warrant further investigation for their potential as novel bioactive agents.

This study bio-synthesized Ag@SeO2 bmNPs successfully, using turmeric ethanol extract, and characterized them using various techniques. The FT-IR analysis reveals the involvement of these plant-derived compounds, especially phenolics, in the reduction process by acting as electron donors and stabilizing/capping agents. Zeta potential analysis showed a slight negative surface charge for the stability of Ag@SeO2 NPs, where TEM revealed spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 20 nm. The XRD confirmed crystallinity and a core-shell structure, and EDX identified elements consistent with Ag@SeO2 and a 3 : 1 Ag/Se atomic ratio. Further, SEM supported the spherical shape and uniform size. These findings highlight the successful biosynthesis of Ag@SeO2 bmNPs with promising properties for diverse applications. Moreover, the Box-Behnken design (BBD) and artificial neural network (ANN) model were engaged to optimize Ag@SeO2 bmNP biosynthesis. BBD identified significant influences of pH, bioconversion temperature, time, and turmeric concentration on bmNP yield, with adjusted R2 and predictive R2 being 0.9075 and 0.8829, respectively. However, its limitations were revealed by a significant lack of fit. ANN modeling with a 3-5-7-1 topology showed superior predictive accuracy and identified optimal conditions for maximizing yield (pH 9.83, 51.7 °C, 1.0 h, 3.71 mg mL-1 turmeric). Validation experiments confirmed the model's reliability. Turmeric extract exhibited significantly higher amounts of phenolics, and flavonoids compared to the bmNPs, suggesting its potential for strong antioxidant activity. Both turmeric extract and bmNPs displayed antioxidant activity in ABTS and DPPH assays, with turmeric extract being the most potent due to its curcuminoid content. The potential activity of Ag@SeO2 bmNPs against S. aureus, K. pneumonia, E. coli, and B. cereus was investigated, with inhibition zones ranging from 22 to 32 mm. The MIC values of tested NPs towards pathogenic bacteria ranged from 165.625 and 331.25 µg mL-1.

Melanin as a natural polymer is found in all living organisms, and plays an important role in protecting the body from harmful UV rays from the sun. The efficiency of fungal biomass (Aureobasidium pullulans) and its extracellular melanin as Cr(VI) biosorbents was comparatively considered. The efficiency of Cr(VI) biosorption by the two sorbents used was augmented up to 240 min. The maximum sorption capacities were 485.747 (fungus biomass) and 595.974 (melanin) mg/g. The practical data were merely fitted to both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The kinetics of the biosorption process obeyed the pseudo-first-order. Melanin was superior in Cr(VI) sorption than fungal biomass. Furthermore, four independent variables (contact time, initial concentration of Cr(VI), biosorbent dosage, and pH,) were modeled by the two decision trees (DTs). Conversely, to equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies, DT of fungal biomass had lower errors compared to DT of melanin. Lately, the DTs improved the efficacy of the Cr(VI) removal process, thus introducing complementary and alternative solutions to equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies. The Cr(VI) biosorption onto the biosorbents was confirmed and elucidated through FTIR, SEM, and EDX investigations. Conclusively, this is the first report study attaining the biosorption of Cr(VI) by biomass of A. pullulans and its extracellular melanin among equilibrium isotherms, kinetic study, and algorithmic decision tree modeling.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst disease (HCD) is common in certain locations. Surgery is associated with postoperative biliary fistula (POBF) and recurrence. The primary aim of this study was to identify whether occult cysto-biliary communication (CBC) can predict recurrent HCD. The secondary aim was to assess the role of cystic fluid bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels in predicting POBF and recurrent HCD. AIM: To identify whether occult CBC can predict recurrent HCD. The secondary aim was to assess the role of cystic fluid bilirubin and ALP levels in predicting POBF and recurrent HCD. METHODS: From September 2010 to September 2016, a prospective multicenter study was undertaken involving 244 patients with solitary primary superficial stage cystic echinococcosis 2 and cystic echinococcosis 3b HCD who underwent laparoscopic partial cystectomy with omentoplasty. Univariable logistic regression analysis assessed independent factors determining biliary complications and recurrence. RESULTS: There was a highly statistically significant association (P ≤ 0.001) between cystic fluid biochemical indices and the development of biliary complications (of 16 patients with POBF, 15 patients had high cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP levels), where patients with high bilirubin-ALP levels were 3405 times more likely to have biliary complications. There was a highly statistically significant association (P ≤ 0.001) between biliary complications, biochemical indices, and the occurrence of recurrent HCD (of 30 patients with recurrent HCD, 15 patients had high cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP; all 16 patients who had POBF later developed recurrent HCD), where patients who developed biliary complications and high bilirubin-ALP were 244.6 and 214 times more likely to have recurrent hydatid cysts, respectively. CONCLUSION: Occult CBC can predict recurrent HCD. Elevated cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP levels predicted POBF and recurrent HCD.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF) is the gold standard surgical intervention for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). LNF can be followed by recurrent symptoms or complications affecting patient satisfaction. The aim of this study is to assess the value of the intraoperative endomanometric evaluation of esophagogastric competence and pressure combined with LNF in patients with large sliding hiatus hernia (>5 cm) with severe GERD (DeMeester score >100). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, multicenter cohort study. Baseline characteristics, postoperative dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome, recurrent symptoms, and satisfaction were collected from a prospectively maintained database. Outcomes analyzed included recurrent reflux symptoms, postoperative side effects, and satisfaction with surgery. RESULTS: Three hundred sixty patients were stratified into endomanometric LNF (180 patients, LNF+) and LNF alone (180 patients, LNF). Recurrent heartburn (3.9 vs. 8.3%) and recurrent regurgitation (2.2 vs. 5%) showed a lower incidence in the LNF+ group ( P =0.012). Postoperative score III recurrent heartburn and score III regurgitations occurred in 0 vs. 3.3% and 0 vs. 2.8% cases in the LNF+ and LNF groups, respectively ( P =0.005). Postoperative persistent dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome occurred in 1.75 vs. 5.6% and 0 vs. 3.9% of patients ( P =0.001). Score III postoperative persistent dysphagia was 0 vs. 2.8% in the two groups ( P =0.007). There was no redo surgery for dysphagia after LNF+. Patient satisfaction at the end of the study was 93.3 vs. 86.7% in both cohorts, respectively ( P =0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative high-resolution manometry and endoscopic were feasible in all patients, and the outcomes were favorable from an effectiveness and safety standpoint.

Automatic facial expression recognition (AFER), sometimes referred to as emotional recognition, is important for socializing. Automatic methods in the past two years faced challenges due to Covid-19 and the vital wearing of a mask. Machine learning techniques tremendously increase the amount of data processed and achieved good results in such AFER to detect emotions; however, those techniques are not designed for masked faces and thus achieved poor recognition. This paper introduces a hybrid convolutional neural network aided by a local binary pattern to extract features in an accurate way, especially for masked faces. The basic seven emotions classified into anger, happiness, sadness, surprise, contempt, disgust, and fear are to be recognized. The proposed method is applied on two datasets: the first represents CK and CK +, while the second represents M-LFW-FER. Obtained results show that emotion recognition with a face mask achieved an accuracy of 70.76% on three emotions. Results are compared to existing techniques and show significant improvement.

Stevia rebaudiana is an important medicinal plant which represents the most important sugar substitute in many countries. Poor seed germination of this plant is a critical problem that affects the final yield and the availability of the products in the market. Continuous cropping without supplying soil nutrients is also a serious issue as it results in declining soil fertility. This review highlights the important use of beneficial bacteria for the enhancement of Stevia rebaudiana growth and its dynamic interactions in the phyllosphere, rhizosphere, and endosphere. Fertilizers can increase crop yield and preserve and improve soil fertility. There is a rising concern that prolonged usage of chemical fertilizers may have negative impacts on the ecosystem of the soil. On the other hand, soil health and fertility are improved by plant growth-promoting bacteria which could eventually increase plant growth and productivity. Accordingly, a biocompatible strategy involving beneficial microorganisms inoculation is applied to boost plant growth and reduce the negative effects of chemical fertilizers. Plants benefit extensively from endophytic bacteria, which promote growth and induce resistance to pathogens and stresses. Additionally, several plant growth-promoting bacteria are able to produce amino acids, polyamines, and hormones that can be used as alternatives to chemicals. Therefore, understanding the dynamic interactions between bacteria and Stevia can help make the favorable bacterial bio-formulations, use them more effectively, and apply them to Stevia to improve yield and quality.

Understanding handwritten documents is a vital and challenging problem that attracts many researchers in the fields of forensic and authentication science. This paper presents an offline system for text-independent writer identification of handwritten documents. The system extracts a handwritten connected component contour, which in turn is divided into segments of specific length. The system utilizes the concept of a bag of features in the writer recognition domain and considers handwritten contour segments to extract two conceptually simple and effective structural features. These features are the contour point curve angle and the CONtour point CONcavity/CONvexity. The system uses the proposed features to train a k-means clustering algorithm to construct a codebook of size K. The method then uses occurrence histograms of the extracted features in the codebook to create a final feature vector for each handwritten document. The effectiveness of the proposed features is evaluated in the writer identification domain using two widely used classification methods: the nearest neighbor and the support vector machine techniques. The proposed writer identification is evaluated on two large and public datasets from different language domains, the Arabic KHATT and English IAM datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed system outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the IAM dataset and provides competitive results on the KHATT dataset with respect to the identification rate.

In comparison to physicochemical and chemical methods, microbial dye biosorption is regarded as an eco-effective and economically viable alternative and is a widely applied method due to its high efficiency and compatibility with the environment. Therefore, the idea of this study is to clarify to what extent the viable cells and the dry biomass of Pseudomonas alcaliphila NEWG-2 can improve the biosorption of methylene blue (MB) from a synthetic wastewater sample. The array of Taguchi paradigm has been conducted to ascertain five variables affecting the biosorption of MB by broth forms of P. alcaliphila NEWG. The data of MB biosorption were familiar to the predicted ones, indicating the precision of the Taguchi model's prediction. The maximum biosorption of MB (87.14%) was achieved at pH 8, after 60 h, in a medium containing 15 mg/ml MB, 2.5% glucose, and 2% peptone, with sorting the highest signal-to-noise ratio (38.80). FTIR spectra detected various functional groups (primary alcohol, α, ß-unsaturated ester, symmetric NH2 bending, and strong C-O stretching) on the bacterial cell wall that participated in the biosorption of MB. Furthermore, the spectacular MB biosorption ability was validated by equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies (the dry biomass form), which were derived from the Langmuir model (qmax = 68.827 mg/g). The equilibrium time was achieved in about 60 min, with 70.5% of MB removal. The biosorption kinetic profile might be adequately represented by pseudo-second order and Elovich models. The changes in the bacterial cells before and after the biosorption of MB were characterized using a scanning electron microscope. As realized from the aforementioned data, the bacterium is a talented, effective, eco-friendly, and low-cost bio-sorbent for the decolorization and remedy of an industrial effluent containing MB from an aqueous environment. The current outcomes in the biosorption of MB molecules promote the use of the bacterial strain as viable cells and/or dry biomass in ecosystem restoration, environmental cleanup, and bioremediation studies.

BACKGROUND: Applying microbial biostimulants during crop cultivation allows for higher sustainability levels. It reduces the need for fertilizers and environmental contaminants while enhancing plant quality. This study assessed 13 endophytic bacteria, 4 newly isolated, and 9 donated, for plant growth-promoting capabilities. Quantitative assessments of indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), siderophores, ammonia, exopolysaccharides, volatile HCN, and phosphate solubilization, along with Bray-Curtis cluster analyses were performed. RESULTS: Upon the results  we selected RhizobiumMAP7, Brevibacillus DesertYSK, Pseudomonas MAP8, BacillusMAP3, Brevibacillus MAP, and Bacillus DeltaYSK to evaluate their effects on Lactuca sativa growth and pigmentation in a 30-day greenhouse pot experiment. Both Brevibacillus DesertYSK and Rhizobium MAP7surpassed other strains in growth promotional effects. They doubled shoot length (12 and 12.3 cm, respectively, when compared with 7 cm for control after 30 days), and fresh weight (0.079 and 0.084 g, respectively, when compared with 0.045 g for control after 30 days), and increased root length by at least 3-fold when compared with control (4.5 and 3.5 cm, respectively, when compared with 1.2 cm for control after 30 days). Chlorophyll content also exhibited at least a 2-fold significant increase in response to bacterization compared with control. CONCLUSIONS: This strain superiority was consistent with the in vitro assays data that showed strains capability as IAA and GA3producers. Also, strains were highly capable ammonia and siderophore producers and phosphate solubilizers, providing considerable hormone and nutrient levels for L. sativa plantsleading to improved growth parameters and appearance. These data support the notion that nodule-based bacteria are potential plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) that may be used on a wider scale rather than just for legumes.

AIM: We aimed to evaluate MIS-C patients' clinical manifestations, laboratory test results and mortality outcomes in an Egyptian tertiary care university hospital. METHODS: We conducted a 12 month cross-sectional study in a tertiary-care university children's hospital. All paediatric patients (1 month to 16 years old) who met the CDC criteria for MIS-C were enrolled in the study. We assessed patients' clinical presentations, complications, treatments, imaging studies, laboratory test results and outcomes. The baseline clinical and laboratory findings of survivors and non-survivors were compared. RESULTS: Of 45 MIS-C patients, 24 (53.3%) were males, and the median (interquartile range) age was 4 (1.25-10) years. All patients had fever, 64.4% had respiratory manifestations, 48.9% presented with coma, 44.4% presented with shock, 33.3% presented with seizures, 31.1% had abdominal pain, 28.9% had vomiting and 22.2% presented with cerebrovascular stroke. A total of 15 (33.3%) patients died, and the non-survivors had a significantly higher incidence of respiratory manifestations (P = 0.028), shock (P = 0.034), cerebrovascular stroke (P = 0.043) and seizures (P = 0.044) as compared to the survivors. In addition, the serum levels of ferritin (P = 0.047), alanine aminotransferase (P = 0.047) and aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.05) were significantly higher in the non-survivors as compared to the survivors. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our findings, MIS-C associated with COVID-19 is a potentially fatal illness. Hospitalised patients with MIS-C often have multi-organ injuries affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurological systems. The deceased are more likely to exhibit respiratory manifestations, shock, cerebrovascular stroke, seizures and elevated serum levels of ferritin and liver enzymes.

The present investigation has been designed by Taguchi and hybrid artificial neural network (ANN) paradigms to improve and optimize the binary sorption of Cobalt(II) and methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution, depending on modifying physicochemical conditions to generate an appropriate constitution for a highly efficient biosorption by the alga; Sargassum latifolium. Concerning Taguchi's design, the predicted values of the two responses were comparable to actual ones. The biosorption of Cobalt(II) ions was more efficient than MB, the supreme biosorption of Cobalt(II) was verified in run L21 (93.28%), with the highest S/N ratio being 39.40. The highest biosorption of MB was reached in run L22 (74.04%), with a S/N ratio of 37.39. The R2 and adjusted R2 were in reasonable values, indicating the validity of the model. The hybrid ANN model has exclusively emerged herein to optimize the biosorption of both Cobalt(II) and MB simultaneously, therefore, the ANN model was better than the Taguchi design. The predicted values of Cobalt(II) and MB biosorption were more obedience to the ANN model. The SEM analysis of the surface of S. latifolium showed mosaic form with massive particles, as crosslinking of biomolecules of the algal surface in the presence of Cobalt(II) and MB. Viewing FTIR analysis showed active groups e.g., hydroxyl, α, ß-unsaturated ester, α, ß-unsaturated ketone, N-O, and aromatic amine. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports deeming the binary sorption of Cobalt(II) and MB ions by S. latifolium during Taguchi orthogonal arrays and hybrid ANN.

Background: Bile stones are associated with numerous complications in liver transplant recipients. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has been proven to be safe and highly effective in dealing with most post-transplant biliary complications. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the possible risk factors for bile stone formation on top of biliary stricture, the effects of stones on graft outcomes, and their management. Methods: This case-control study included 83 patients who underwent living donor liver transplant (LDLT) and suffered from postoperative biliary stricture with or without stones. Patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 55) included patients with biliary strictures with no stones and group 2 (n = 28) included patients who developed stones on top of biliary strictures. Data about the recipient and donor characteristics, surgical technique, blood lipid profile, immunosuppressive drugs, post-transplant complications, and interventions were collected from the medical records. Results: The frequency of hepatitis C virus (HCV) was significantly higher in group 2 compared to group 1 (71.4% vs. 47.3%, p = 0.036). The body mass index (BMI) of the donors was significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1 (25.17 ± 2.53 vs. 23.68 ± 2.63, p = 0.015). Episodes of acute rejection were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1 (21.4% vs. 5.5%, p = 0.027). The ERCP was sufficient in most of the cases (89.2%) to ensure biliary drainage. The identified independent risk factors for biliary stones included HCV, biliary drain, donor's BMI, and serum cholesterol level. Conclusion: Positive HCV, biliary drain insertion, donor's BMI, and serum cholesterol level were independent risk factors for developing bile stones on top of biliary strictures. Biliary stones were associated with high episodes of acute graft rejection, and they could be successfully managed by the ERCP modality.

The current study aimed to scale up the favorable bio-stimulants for enhancing the growth and breeding strategies of Stevia rebaudiana to increase sugar productivity. Inoculation of 45-day-old S. rebaudiana plantlets with Bacillus cereus and Azospirillum brasilense alone or in combination for 30 days allowed comparisons among their effects on enhancement and improvement of plant growth, production of bioactive compounds and expression of steviol glycoside genes. B. cereus SrAM1 isolated from surface-sterilized Stevia rebaudiana leaves was molecularly identified using 16s rRNA and tested for its ability to promote plant growth. Beneficial endophytic B. cereus SrAM1 induced all plant growth-promoting traits, except solubilization of phosphate, therefore it showed high effectiveness in the promotion of growth and production of bioactive compounds. Treatment of plants with B. cereus SrAM1 alone revealed carbohydrates content of 278.99 mg/g, total soluble sugar of 114.17 mg/g, total phenolics content of 34.05 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight) and total antioxidants activity of 32.33 mg (A.A)/g dry weight). Thus, plantlets inoculated with B. cereus SrAM1 alone exhibited the greatest responses in physiological and morphological parameters, but plantlets inoculated with B. cereus SrAM1 + A. brasilense showed a maximal upregulation of genes responsible for the biosynthesis of steviol glycosides (Kaurene oxidase, ent-KO; UDP-dependent glycosyl transferases of UGT85C2, UGT74G1, UGT76G1). Taken together, the used bacterial strains, particularly B. cereus SrAM1 could significantly improve the growth of S. rebaudiana via dynamic interactions in plants.

The definitive screening design (DSD) and artificial neural network (ANN) were conducted for modeling the biosorption of Co(II) by Pseudomonas alcaliphila NEWG-2. Factors such as peptone, incubation time, pH, glycerol, glucose, K2HPO4, and initial cobalt had a significant effect on the biosorption process. MgSO4 was the only insignificant factor. The DSD model was invalid and could not forecast the prediction of Co(II) removal, owing to the significant lack-of-fit (P < 0.0001). Decisively, the prediction ability of ANN was accurate with a prominent response for training (R2 = 0.9779) and validation (R2 = 0.9773) and lower errors. Applying the optimal levels of the tested variables obtained by the ANN model led to 96.32 ± 2.1% of cobalt bioremoval. During the biosorption process, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the sorption of Co(II) ions by P. alcaliphila. FTIR indicated the appearance of a new stretching vibration band formed with Co(II) ions at wavenumbers of 562, 530, and 531 cm-1. The symmetric amino (NH2) binding was also formed due to Co(II) sorption. Interestingly, throughout the revision of publications so far, no attempt has been conducted to optimize the biosorption of Co(II) by P. alcaliphila via DSD or ANN paradigm.

Rhodotorula yeasts which are known as carotenogenic yeasts have a great industrial value due to their ability to produce carotenoids. In particular, the isolated yeast Rhodotorula sp. (strain ATL72) has been reported to be a promising producer of high concentrations of carotenoids. A combination of central composite design (CCD) and Plackett-Burman (PB) design was used to optimize carotenoids produced by this yeast. The optimum production of carotenoids was completed when the yeast was grown in a production medium composed of 3.7 g/L malt extract, 7.7 g/L fructose, 9 g/L urea, 35 g/L NaCl, and 1 g/L yeast extract at 27.5 °C, pH 6.7, and 180 rpm. Two batch runs in 1 L and 7 L bioreactors were conducted which increased the productivity of carotenoid concentration from 21.5 mg/L after 98 h of incubation at the level of the shake flask to 229.9 mg/L after 47 h of incubation at the level of 7 L bioreactor. The carotenoid pigment was extracted in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, petroleum ether, and sodium chloride, and subsequently identified and characterized using UV-visible scanning, thin layer chromatography, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether hepatic hilar and celiac plexus nerve blocks provide safe and effective analgesia to patients undergoing doxorubicin-eluting embolics transarterial chemoembolization (DEE-TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective, randomized trial, 92 patients undergoing DEE-TACE for hepatocellular carcinoma were enrolled. The control group received standard intraprocedural local anesthetic, intra-arterial lidocaine, and intravenous analgesia; the study group underwent additional hepatic hilar and celiac plexus nerve blocks. Intra-arterial lidocaine, intravenous and oral narcotic and antiemetic requirements after the procedure, pain, patient satisfaction, adverse events, and hospital stay were compared. RESULTS: The nerve block group reported less pain during and after the procedure at days 1 and 7 (P < .001), although differences resolved by week 2. The control group received more intra-arterial lidocaine (P < .001) and required approximately double the amount of narcotic analgesia during and after the procedure, extending to 3 weeks after the procedure (P < .001), as well as less antiemetics (P < .001). No differences in adverse events, hospital stay, and overall patient satisfaction were noted. CONCLUSIONS: Hepatic hilar and celiac plexus nerve blocks before procedures can result in lower pain during and after procedures in patients undergoing DEE-TACE. Furthermore, nerve blocks result in lower opioid consumption and opioid-related complications for 3 weeks following procedures.

The presence of inorganic pollutants such as Cadmium(II) and Chromium(VI) could destroy our environment and ecosystem. To overcome this problem, much attention was directed to microbial technology, whereas some microorganisms could resist the toxic effects and decrease pollutants concentration while the microbial viability is sustained. Therefore, we built up a complementary strategy to study the biofilm formation of isolated strains under the stress of heavy metals. As target resistive organisms, Rhizobium-MAP7 and Rhodotorula ALT72 were identified. However, Pontoea agglumerans strains were exploited as the susceptible organism to the heavy metal exposure. Among the methods of sensing and analysis, bioelectrochemical measurements showed the most effective tools to study the susceptibility and resistivity to the heavy metals. The tested Rhizobium strain showed higher ability of removal of heavy metals and more resistive to metals ions since its cell viability was not strongly inhibited by the toxic metal ions over various concentrations. On the other hand, electrochemically active biofilm exhibited higher bioelectrochemical signals in presence of heavy metals ions. So by using the two strains, especially Rhizobium-MAP7, the detection and removal of heavy metals Cr(VI) and Cd(II) is highly supported and recommended.

Our present study was designed to investigate the role of both Trichoderma harzianum and chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) flower extract in mutual reaction against growth of Pythium ultimum. In vitro, the activity of chamomile extract was found to reduce the radial growth of Pythium ultimum up to 30% compared to the control. Whereas, the radial growth reduction effect of T. harzianum against P. ultimum reached 81.6% after 120 h. Data also showed the productivity of total phenolics and total flavonoids by T. harzianum, was 12.18 and 6.33 mg QE/100 mL culture filtrate, respectively. However, these compounds were determined in chamomile flower extract at concentrations of 75.33 and 24.29 mg QE/100 mL, respectively. The fractionation of aqueous extract of chamomile flower using HPLC provided several polyphenolic compounds such as pyrogallol, myricetin, rosemarinic acid, catechol, p-coumaric acid, benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid and other minor compounds. In vivo, the potentiality of T. harzianum with chamomile flower extract against Pythium pathogen of bean was investigated. Data obtained showed a reduction in the percentage of rotted seed and infected seedling up to 28 and 8%, respectively. Whereas, the survival increased up to 64% compared to other ones. There was also a significant promotion in growth features, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, total polyphenols and flavonoids, polyphenol-oxidase and peroxidase enzymes compared to other ones. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reported studies that included the mutual association of fungus, T. harzianum with the extract taken from the chamomile flower against P. ultimum, either in vitro or in vivo. In conclusion, the application of both T. harzianum and/or M. chamomilla extracts in the control of bean Pythium pathogen showed significant results.
