RESUMO

Objective. To produce, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a film to develop the foundational knowledge and skills of health professions students and teach them the importance of interprofessional collaboration. Methods. An existing interprofessional case study about a Hispanic man suffering from multiple chronic health conditions and the impact his health had on his family served as the basis for the film. To ensure a high-quality production, faculty members partnered with a local theatre company to produce the film. Upon completion, the film was integrated into an annual interprofessional forum and evaluated by both students and faculty members in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Results. The 22-minute film, entitled Meet Fred Santiago: Improving Care Through Interprofessional Collaboration, was shown to 1921 students and 250 faculty members who participated in the interprofessional forum over the three years. Of these, 1858 students and 174 faculty members completed a program evaluation following the forum. The majority (>86%) of student and faculty respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the film presented a realistic view of the challenges faced by people with multiple chronic health problems. The majority of students (>85%) agreed or strongly agreed that the film helped them appreciate the breadth of issues confronting individuals with multiple chronic health problems. Conclusion. The film, Meet Fred Santiago, is an effective tool for introducing health professions students to the complex interrelationship of medical, psychological, and social issues experienced by individuals with chronic health conditions.

RESUMO

In a sample of 99 sexually abused adolescent girls in the foster care system (64% in congregate living situations and 36% in family/foster care homes), nearly half were psychologically functioning well despite having experienced moderate-to-severe emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. It was hypothesized that these girls with resilient trajectories would differ from the currently symptomatic girls on several protective factors: education, future orientation, family support, peer influence, and religion. The results revealed that the girls with resilient trajectories were significantly more certain of their educational plans and optimistic about their future and had more positive peer influences.

RESUMO

This study documents the school experiences of 262 youth referred for independent-living preparation from the foster care system of one midwestern U.S. county. Of the youth, 73% had been suspended at least once since the seventh grade, and 16% had been expelled. In the past year, 58% had failed a class, and 29% had physical fights with students. Yet the group reported high educational aspirations: 70% wanted to attend college. Those in congregate care and family settings often had school behavior problems. The results support the need for a system of education advocates who work to maintain proper education placements for youth in foster care and help them receive the academic resources they need to graduate from high school and proceed to college.

RESUMO

Abstract Research with gay, lesbian and bisexual adolescents has tended to focus on their psychosocial risk factors, with little attention paid to their dating experiences. Unique in its focus on younger, high school-age women, the present study examined dating relationships among 112 lesbian and bisexual women, ages 13 to 18. Characteristics of the young women's dating relationships were explored, as well as dating stress, the presence of verbal and physical abuse in their dating relationships, and psychosocial factors associated with dating. Findings indicate that, despite potential barriers, adolescent lesbian and bisexual women actively date. Relationship concerns requiring supportive interventions by youth-serving professionals are identified and study limitations are discussed.

RESUMO

This descriptive study examines the differences between sexually abused and non-sexually abused adolescent females in the foster care system who were participating in an independent living program. Fifty-four percent of the 190 girls met the criteria for being categorized as sexually abused. Those who experienced sexual abuse had also experienced significantly more of other types of child maltreatment. In addition, those who had been sexually abused were much more likely to be living in a congregate living setting, such as a group home or residential center, than those who were not sexually abused. The girls who had been sexually abused exhibited significantly more behavioral difficulties, including internalizing and externalizing problems, with 51% of them having clinically significant scores on the Youth Self-Report version of the Child Behavior Checklist. When co-occurrence of substance use and mental health problems were examined, sexually abused girls were significantly more likely than the non-sexually abused girls to meet the established criteria.

RESUMO

Focus groups were conducted at five chemical dependency treatment facilities assessing residents' (N = 65) conceptualizations of denial and the role it may have played in the pathogenesis and progression of their substance use disorders. Two of the authors read verbatim transcripts of the focus group proceedings and independently developed models of denial based on those data. The first reader identified a core set of interpersonal and attributional processes that appeared to explain why many participants did not perceive their substance abuse and associated problems as clearly aberrant and/or chose not to self-identify as alcohol or other drug dependent until late in the course of their chemical dependency. The second reader identified five stages that clients appeared to pass through as they progressed from no awareness of their substance use disorder to full awareness. A second set of readers then independently developed an integrated stage and process model of denial that incorporated elements of the models identified earlier. Though obviously exploratory in nature, these findings suggest that denial is a far more complex and dynamic set of intra- and interpersonal processes than is generally recognized.
