RESUMO

Background: The success of treatment strategies to control the disease relapse requires determining factors affecting the incident short-time and long-time of disease relapse. Therefore, this study was aimed to identify the factors affecting of short-and long-time of occurrence of disease relapse in patients with tuberculosis (TB) using a parametric mixture cure model. Materials and Methods: In this historical cohort study; the data was collected from 4564 patients with TB who referred to the Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Research Center of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital from 2005 to 2015. In order to evaluate the factors affecting of short-and long-time of occurrence of disease relapse, a parametric mixture cure model was used. Results: In this study, the estimation of the annual incidence of TB relapse showed that the probability of recurrence in the first year is 1% and in the third and tenth years after treatment is 3% and 5%, respectively. In addition, the results of this study showed that the variables of residence, exposure to cigarette smoke, adverse effects of drug use, incarceration, and pulmonary and extra- pulmonary tuberculosis were the factors affecting the short-time recurrence of TB. The variables of drug use, pulmonary and extra- pulmonary tuberculosis, and also incarceration affected the long-term recurrence of this disease. Conclusion: Cure models by separating factors affecting the short-time occurrence from the long-time occurrence of disease relapse can provide more accurate information to researchers to control and reduce TB relapse.

RESUMO

The application of nanotechnology in food packaging is widely considered during the last two decades. In this regard, numerous studies have been conducted regarding applying nanomaterials such as zinc oxide, clay, silver, carbon nanotube, titanium dioxide, and copper, and copper oxide in food packaging which were summarized in the current study. The employing of nano food packaging increases the physicochemical quality of food (color, flavor, moisture content, weight, bioavailability, and texture) and reduces the microbial load by cell-membrane function, Trojan-horse, and reactive oxygen mechanisms while they improve the barrier/mechanical properties of food packaging. Although nano food packaging has many advantages for public health, the associated toxicity due to migration, especially in acidic conditions, is considerable. Further studies regarding the advantages and disadvantages of this technique are recommended.

RESUMO

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), pica is described as eating one or more non-nutritive, non-food substances over a period of at least 1 month that is severe enough to warrant clinical attention. The present case is a 44-year-old man who was brought to emergency department following severe abdominal pain, but died before admission or receiving any treatments. On the autopsy, 64 bolts and metal fittings (3700 grams) were found in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine of the patient.

RESUMO

Organ shortage is the most significant factor in restricting the activities of transplantation systems. We herein report the positive impact of Muslims' holy month of Ramadan on willingness to donate organs in Iran. Data were derived from the database of Donation Willingness Registries, affiliated to the organ procurement unit of Masih Daneshvari Hospital during March 2007 till March 2008. The number of applications for organ donation was compared between Ramadan and its previous month, and the socio-economic characteristics of the applicants were compared between those who applied in Ramadan and those who did so in the previous month. In addition, the mean number of daily applications was compared between Ramadan and the other months of the same year. A total of 11528 applications for organ donation cards were registered for the Ramadan of 2007 as opposed to 4538 applications in the previous month, showing an increasing rate of 154%. The mean number of daily applications was significantly higher in Ramadan than that of the other months of the same year (P < 0.001). There was also a significant difference in terms of the socio-economic characteristics between the applicants in Ramadan and those in the previous month. The increase in organ donation willingness in Ramadan may be the result of the propagation of altruism by the mass media and religious organizations. Ramadan seems to provide a great opportunity to promote organ donation across the Muslim world.
