RESUMO

The composition of fatty acids in the muscle tissue of the unique Central Asian carp-like fish, Potanin Altai osman Oreoleuciscus potanini, was studied for the first time. The populations of these fish in the reservoirs of the semiarid zone (Durgun and Taishir) during the period of their formation are considered. It was shown that the content of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids in O. potanini corresponds to the median of this value in the order Cypriniformes. It was established that the basis of the food web of the herbivorous form of this species consists of microalgae (diatoms, Euglena and, possibly, chrysophytes), as well as bacteria. At the same time, the levels of bacterial biomarkers, 15-17BCFA and 17:0 were significantly higher in fish in the Durgun reservoir, whereas the level of EPA (diatom biomarker) in O. potanini was higher in the Taishir reservoir. The established higher values of the heavy nitrogen isotope content in the muscles of O. potanini from the Taishir reservoir are most likely associated with the yet unformed benthic communities and with the incomplete diversification of the riverine form of the Potanin Altai osman into lacustrine forms.

RESUMO

We report on the phenomenon of intersection of a chaotic attractor and a chaotic repeller in a system of two adaptively coupled phase oscillators. This is a feature of the presence of the so-called mixed dynamics, which is a new type of chaos characterized by the fundamental inseparability of conservative and dissipative behavior. The considered system is the first example of a time-irreversible system in which this type of dynamics is observed. We show that a crucial factor in this effect is the detuning of the natural frequencies of phase oscillators.

RESUMO

We analyze the effects of N-terminal acetylation and C-terminal amidation on the cytotoxic properties of ß-hairpin antimicrobial peptide tachyplesin I. MTT-assay showed that modified tachyplesin I exhibited increased cytotoxicity toward both tumor and normal human cells. Hemolytic activity of modified tachyplesin I was also higher than that of the initial molecule. In contrast to non-modified tachyplesin I, the peptide with C- and N-terminal modifications is resistant to proteolytic degradation in fresh human serum. C- and N-terminal modifications make tachyplesin I more attractive prototype of anticancer drug due to its more potent cytotoxic effect and better pharmacokinetic properties.

RESUMO

Antiviral activity of Ergoferon was studied in vitro on an experimental model of rotavirus infection in MA-104 cell line. In infected cells treated with Ergoferon, rotavirus titer was shown to decrease by 83 and 90% in comparison with cells treated with solvent used for Ergoferon preparation (p<0.05) and distilled water (p<0.05), respectively. These findings demonstrate high anti-rotavirus activity of Ergoferon.

RESUMO

All cases of bacteremia caused solely by Escherichia coli in 1977-1979, 1987-1989, and 1993-1994 in a Finnish university hospital were reviewed retrospectively to determine the clinical manifestations, the outcome, and the prognostic factors. In 332 episodes, mortality during the month after the first positive blood culture was 17%. This figure diminished during the study period from 23% in the 1970s to 9% in the 1990s (p = 0.028). Mortality was lowest among patients treated with a combination of antibiotics, 7% versus 18% among those treated otherwise (p = 0.034). The use of acetaminophen increased during the study period from 18 to 55%. Mortality among patients who received acetaminophen within a period < 24 h to 48 h of the first positive blood culture was 10% versus 22% among others (p = 0.002). Logistic regression analysis showed six factors predictive of a fatal outcome: pneumonia, no known focus, shock, CNS disorder, thromboembolism, and rapidly fatal underlying disease. Appropriate antibiotic therapy predicted survival. In the analysis, replacement of appropriate antibiotic therapy by acetaminophen revealed that this drug was significantly associated with survival.
