RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma and peritoneal fluid levels of soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) are altered in women with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). DESIGN: Prospective, case-control study. SETTING: Lis Maternity Hospital and the Sara Racine IVF Unit, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel. PATIENT(S): The study group comprised 16 women with severe OHSS. The control groups comprised 10 women treated with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and 8 women with normal findings at diagnostic laparoscopy. INTERVENTION(S): Plasma samples were obtained from the study group and the first control group. Peritoneal fluid samples were obtained during paracentesis from the study group and during diagnostic laparoscopy from the second control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Samples were assayed by specific ELISA for sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1. RESULT(S): The mean peritoneal fluid levels of sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1 and the mean plasma levels of sVCAM-1 were significantly higher in the women with OHSS than in the control groups. However, the mean plasma levels of sICAM-1 were comparable. A positive correlation was demonstrated between the levels of sVCAM-1 and plasma E2 at the time of hCG administration and between the levels of sICAM-1 and number of ova retrieved. CONCLUSION(S): Our findings suggest that soluble cell adhesion molecules may have a role in the pathogenesis and progression of OHSS.

RESUMO

Specific cell-mediated immunity to polio antigens in 22 children suffering from acute paralytic poliomyelitis was investigated by the macrophage migration inhibition factor (MIF) technique. A positive response was observed in 9 of the 11 patients tested 1-4 days after the onset of the paralysis, and in 6 of the 8 patients tested between 15-90 days. In one case, the response was positive before paralysis became evident. In the 8 patients tested 90-360 days after paralysis, only three gave positive results. No response was observed in 34 of 39 healthy children tested 1-3 months after having received oral polio vaccine, or in 30 healthy adults.

RESUMO

Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) toward myelin human basic protein (HBP) was studied in 19 chronic drug-free schizophrenic patients and in 30 patients with primary affective disorders receiving psychoactive drugs, 74% of the schizophrenics showed an inhibition of macrophage migration, whereas only one patient from the affective group showed such a response. These results indicate that drugs are not responsible for the appearance of CMI to HBP in schizophrenics. One out of 9 ECT-treated patients developed a CMI to HBP.

RESUMO

Specific cell mediated immunity to polio antigens was investigated in 22 children suffering from acute paralytic poliomyelitis by the macrophage migration inhibition (MIF) technique. A positive response was observed in 9 out of the 11 patients tested 1-14 days after the onset of the paralysis and in 6 out of the 8 patients tested between 15-90 days. In one case, the response was positive even before paralysis became evident. Out of the 8 patients tested 90-360 days after paralysis, only 3 gave positive results. No response whatsoever could, on the other hand, be observed in the great majority of children tested 1-3 months after having received oral polio vaccine or in healthy adults. These findings demonstrate that in poliomyelitis the specific C.M.I. response can be detected before the circulating antibodies and suggest that possibility of the use of this technique in the early diagnosis of poliomyelitis as well as in the differentiation between this disease and other neurological disorders.

RESUMO

Adenovirus and other usually benign viral infections may occasionally be associated with severe fulminant disease, often accompanied by acute acquired cellular immunodeficiency. Thymic humoral factor derived from calf thymuses has been demonstrated to have the capacity to restore the immunocompetence of immature, incompetent T cells. This factor was used in the treatment of a 3 1/2-year-old boy who was critically ill with an adenovirus infection and presented evidence of immunocellular deficiency. Within less than 48 hours after the institution of treatment with thymic humoral factor there was a dramatic, progressive clinical improvement, with restoration of the cellular immunocompetence. It is suggested that thymic humoral factor may be beneficial in the treatment of severe viral infections associated with depressed cellular immunocompetence.

RESUMO

Cell-mediated immune response to myelin human basic protein was studied by the macrophage migration inhibition test in patients suffering from schizophrenia. Eighteen out of 32 patients with chronic schizophrenia demonstrated human basic protein-induced inhibition of the migration index, while 4 out of 41 acute schizophrenics showed an inhibition of macrophage migration.
