RESUMO

The purpose was to determine IFN-g release as a response to vaccination against tuberculosis in dairy heifers under commercial settings. Four-hundred pregnant heifers from ten herds were randomly allocated into four groups: (1) unvaccinated, (2) BCG vaccinated, (3) BCG vaccinated plus a CFPP400 µg+polygen boost, and (4) BCG vaccinated plus a CFP200 µg+polygen boost, under a completely randomized blocks design. A dose of 106CFU of BCG was delivered SC in the neck, then blood samples were taken at days 0, 30, 120, 210, 300 and 720 to estimate IFN-g release in response to bovine-PPD antigen. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed in IFN-g release between groups at days 0 and 120. At days 30 and 210, vaccinated groups show higher IFN-g release than the control group but only difference of group 3 was significant (P < 0.05). At day 300, group 1 showed significantly higher IFN-g release. No significant difference was observed at day 720. Using IFN-g release as a surrogate for vaccine efficacy, BCG plus a boost with CFP or CFPP combined with an adjuvant that improves cellular immune response has the potential to protect cattle against tuberculosis for moderate periods of time in vaccinated cattle under commercial settings.

RESUMO

We report a patient with cirrhosis and hepatopulmonary syndrome. This syndrome is an entity characterized by anomalies in the arterial oxygenation in patients with chronic hepatic disease and/or portal hypertension and demonstration of pulmonary vasodilatation (PV) in absence of primary cardiac or pulmonary disease. We show that the finding of PV with transthoracic contrast enhanced echocardiography (TCEE) in the diagnosis of PV is real and corresponds to direct measurement of capillary diameter by morphometry.

RESUMO

A case of carcinoma in the breast of a male patient with a chronic gastric ulcer is described. The patient had received cimetidine for 17 years. Histological examination of an excisional biopsy showed lobular in situ and infiltrating carcinoma. In our review of the English literature, this is the 18th case of lobular carcinoma of the male breast to be reported; it is also the first report of lobular carcinoma associated with the use of cimetidine, and the second in a man with documentation of genotype.

RESUMO

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem disease in which the kidneys are frequently involved. The clinical and histopathologic diagnosis of SLE is based on the American Rheumatism Association (ARA) and the World Health Organization classification, respectively. A few adults who qualify as SLE by the ARA criteria but are antinuclear antibody (ANA)-negative have been reported. We found only one report of a child with SLE where renal disease was the only manifestation but who had a positive ANA. This report describes 3 children who presented with the nephrotic syndrome and in whom the renal histology is highly suggestive of SLE. Short-term follow-up as failed to demonstrate other systemic involvement and the ANA has continued to be negative.
