RESUMO

This paper describes a compact, lightweight and ultra-low power ambulatory wireless EEG system based upon QUASAR's innovative noninvasive bioelectric sensor technologies. The sensors operate through hair without skin preparation or conductive gels. Mechanical isolation built into the harness permits the recording of high quality EEG data during ambulation. Advanced algorithms developed for this system permit real time classification of workload during subject motion. Measurements made using the EEG system during ambulation are presented, including results for real time classification of subject workload.

RESUMO

Recently we developed an efficient broadband decoupling sequence called SPARC-16 for liquid crystals ¿J. Magn. Reson. 130, 317 (1998). The sequence is based upon a 16-step phase cycling of the 2-step TPPM decoupling method for solids ¿J. Chem. Phys. 103, 6951 (1995). Since then, we have found that a stepwise variation of the phase angle in the TPPM sequence offers even better results. The application of this new method to a liquid crystalline compound, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, and a solid, L-tyrosine hydrochloride, is reported. The reason for the improvement is explained by an analysis of the problem in the rotating frame.

RESUMO

The effect of several new homonuclear dipolar decoupling methods (frequency-switching Lee-Goldburg decoupling and two sequences based on z-rotational decoupling) on the 13C spectra of liquid crystals has been studied, and the results are compared with those obtained by using two well-established methods (MREV-8 and BLEW-48). For benzene dissolved in two liquid crystalline solvents, BLEW-48 gives the best spectral resolution. The BLEW-48 sequence has also been applied to the 2D method of proton-encoded local field (PELF) spectroscopy to study a bulk liquid crystal, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB). The results are compared with those obtained by using MREV-8, and it is suggested that the BLEW-48 sequence may be preferable to MREV-8 for application in the PELF method. RESUMO

Oxidation of p-nitro- and p-dimethylaminomethyl derivatives of benzylamine, catalyzed by amine oxidases from human placenta and blood serum, was studied. The amine oxidase activity was estimated by means of a spectrophotometric procedure involving measurement of aldehyde formed during the reaction after extraction with hexane. For extraction of benzaldehyde and p-nitrobenzaldehyde in the samples HCl was added up to the concentration of 0.17 M and for extraction of p-dimethylaminomethyl benzaldehyde--NaHCO3 up to the 0.5 M concentration. The reaction products were extracted with a yield of 94%, 83% and 78% respectively; molar extinction coefficients for aldehydes at the maximal absorption were equal to 13,080 (241 mn), 16,520 (258 nm), and 11,547 (248 nm), respectively. Analysis of the oxidative reactions using inhibitors Lilly 51,641, deprenyl, aminoguanidine and semicarbazide showed that monoamine oxidase of the A type (95%) and benzylamine oxidase (7%) catalyzed oxidation of 0.1 mM p-nitrobenzylamine in mitochondria and microsomes but oxidation of the substrate at 1 mM concentration was catalyzed by monoamine oxidase of the B type (20% in mitochondria and 35% in microsomes). In the soluble fraction oxidation of p-nitrobenzylamine was catalyzed mainly by diamine oxidase (55%); monoamine oxidase of the A type catalyzed oxidation of 30% of the amine, benzylamine oxidase-15%. The molecular activity of the mitochondrial monoamine oxidase of the A type with p-nitrobenzylamine as a substrate was equal to 61 nmol of the product per 1 mole of the enzyme per 1 min.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

In quantitative measurements of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate and pyridoxal in enzymes routinely used phenylhydrasine was substituted for 4-nitrophenylhydrasine. This increased the sensitivity of the method by 70%. The modified procedure had another advantage: it allowed measurements of the optic density of resulting 4-nitrophenylhydrasones at 430 nm for acid solutions and at 550 nm for alkaline solutions.

RESUMO

The number and species of phenol decomposing microorganisms, as well as the activity of their biochemical oxidation of phenol, were studied in waters of the shelf zone of the Black Sea, from the Danube estuary to Batumi. The number of these microorganisms and their phenol decomposing activity were higher in waters near harbours than in regions outside the anthropogenic activity. These parameters were highest in contaminated waters of the river origin. Most of these phenol decomposing microorganisms belong to the genera Pseudomonas and Bacterium, with the predominance of the species of Bacterium album and Pseudomonas desmolyticum (subspecis Pseudomonas rathionis).

RESUMO

The materials concerning 19 patients with pleural mesotheliomas are analysed. The patients were subdivided into three groups according to the clinico-roentgenological picture and course of the affection: 1) four patients in whom pleural mesothelioma proceeded without exudate accumulation; 2) seven patients in whom exudate accumulation in the pleural cavity was the main sign of the tumor; 3) 8 subjects in whom the tumor developed on the side of an artificial pneumothorax many years following its cessation. Among 19 patients only in 5 cases the tumor was suspected soon after their admission to the hospital. A needle biopsy of the pleura is felt to be the most effective method of diagnosis of pleural mesotheliomas, whereas in failure of the former -- pleuroscopy.
