RESUMO

This study aims to provide research progress and update on structural, physicochemical, nutritional characteristics and technologically processing impact on cool-season adapted oat and barley cereal kernels. The study focused on cool-season adapted oats grain production and nutrition in ruminant systems and strategies to improve the utilization of the oat grain through processing techniques. The updated evaluation methods and advanced molecular spectroscopy techniques to study molecular structures with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy were reviewed. This study summarizes the methods and provides a potential approach on how to use vibrational molecular spectroscopy to study molecular chemistry and molecular structure and molecular nutrition interaction of grain.

RESUMO

We present this document as a guide to preparing a specific institutional pre-anaesthesia checklist, as recommended in the Helsinki declaration on patient safety in anaesthesiology. Also, the recently recommended WHO "safe surgery check-list" includes a check-list for anaesthesia. A working group was established in accordance with the charter of the Spanish Society of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation (Sociedad Española de Anestesiología y Reanimación [SEDAR]). The new patient safety culture introduced into medicine, and the recommendations of European anaesthesia societies has led us to design and update protocols in order to improve results in this important part of our speciality. We have prepared these recommendations or guidelines using, as examples, updates of pre-anaesthesia check-lists by other American (ASA), British, or Canadian societies of anaesthesia. With that aim, we enlisted the help of anaesthesia ventilator experts and the participation and advice of experienced anaesthesiologists from all parts of Spain. After various corrections and modifications, the document was available at www.sedar.es, so that any anaesthesiologist could propose any correction, or give their opinion. Finally, these guidelines have been approved by the SEDAR Board of Directors, before it was sent for publication in this journal. The aims of this document are to provide: a guideline applicable to all anaesthesia machines, a descriptive pre-anaesthesia check-list that include everything necessary for the anaesthesia procedure, and a resumed check-list to be available in all the anaesthesia machines or other equivalent, but prepared for each institution, which should include anaesthetic equipment and drugs. So, in order to ensure the aims and requirements of the European Board of Anaesthesiology, the European Society of Anaesthesiology, and the WHO are met, each institution should have a protocol for checking equipment and drugs. These guidelines are applicable to any anaesthesia equipment, enabling every institution to develop their own checking protocols, adapted to their anaesthesia machines and their procedures. With the consent of the SEDAR, this group will collaborate with anaesthesia machines providers in order to develop specific checklists for each of their models that will be available at www.sedar.es.

RESUMO

Cellular aggregation, which occurs in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, is controlled by the hydrophobicity as well as the electrokinetic potential of the cell surface and substratum. It is known that the Mycobacterium genus form aggregates, but the influence of sugar on the cellular aggregation has not been reported for this genus. The mutant strain Mycobacterium sp. MB-3683 that transforms sterol to androstenedione (AD), a steroidal precursor used by the pharmaceutical industries, was employed in this study. This strain was cultivated in a synthetic medium on three sugars (glycerol, glucose and fructose) at different concentrations, and at 144 h microbial growth, cellular aggregation, hydrophobicity, lipid content, fatty acid composition, and width of cellular walls were measured. It was observed that at different sugar concentrations, similar growth and pH were obtained. However, in fructose, the aggregation level was significantly high, followed by glycerol and glucose (fructose < glycerol < glucose). These results were confirmed using electron microscopy and the aggregate area quantified by image analysis. Hydrophobicity was the highest in fructose and the lowest in glucose. The total lipids, in contrast to cellular hydrophobicity, were higher in glucose than glycerol. Although, the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of principal fatty acids isolated was similar regardless of sugar used. In glycerol and fructose, the paraffins were observed, which are responsible for the high cellular hydrophobicity detected above. The width of cell wall of the organisms grown on glucose and fructose was similar, but in glycerol the walls were very thin. There is a correspondence between cell wall width and lipid content.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to establish the level of concordance between two observers from two different health institutions in Mexico City, in the diagnosis of acute leukemias and their different varieties. We studied 73 consecutive cases of adults with these diseases. Each one of the two observers established their diagnosis on two occasions at least 15 days apart. They first made their diagnosis taking as a base the neoplastic cells morphology in bone marrow smears, and after that, with morphology plus specific cytochemistry. The outcomes of the two observers were also compared with the official diagnosis. Kappa test was performed to know interobserver and intraobserver concordance. The kappa values for the diagnosis myeloid/lymphoid were found among the highest (51 to 91). Weighted kappa was also applied to know the level of concordance in the diagnosis of the different varieties of acute leukemia, myeloid and lymphoid. In these cases the weighted kappa values were lower compared with the previous values (lymphoid, from 47 to 82; myeloid, from 30 to 66). Cytochemistry paradoxically was a confusing factor when it was used: in these cases the kappa values were lower (32 to 84) than morphology alone (39 to 91). The outcomes showed the subjective level in the diagnosis of the myeloid subtypes was more important in them than in the lymphoid subtypes.
