RESUMO

The stiffness (K) and slenderness factor (λ) of a steel plate-based damper has been studied on the basis of elastic-inelastic-plastic buckling (EIP) modes and flexural/shear/flexural-shear failure mechanisms (FSF-S), which has been designed for the improvement of the behavior of concentrically braced frames. Steel plate-based dampers offer significant benefits in terms of mode shapes and failure mechanisms, contributing to improved dynamic performance, enhanced structural resilience, and increased safety of civil engineering structures. Their effectiveness in mitigating dynamic loads makes them a valuable tool for engineers designing structures to withstand extreme environmental conditions and seismic events. This study was undertaken by using the learning abilities of the response surface methodology (RSM), artificial neural network (ANN) and the evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR). Steel plate dampers are special structural designs used to withstand the effect of special loading conditions especially seismic effects. Its design based on the prediction of its stiffness (K) and slenderness factor (λ) cannot be overlooked in the present-day artificial intelligence technology. In this research work, thirty-three entries based on the steel plate damper geometrical properties were recorded and deployed for the intelligent forecast of the fundamental properties (λ and K). Design ratios of the steel plate damper properties were considered and models behavior was recorded. From the outcome of the model, it can be observed that even though the EPR and ANN in that order outclassed the other techniques, the RSM produced model minimization and maximization features of the desirability levels, color factor scales and 3D surface observation, which shows the real model behaviors. Overall, the EPR with R2 of 0.999 and 1.000 for the λ and K, respectively showed to be the decisive model but the RSM has features that can be beneficial to the structural design of the studied steel plate damper for a more robust and sustainable construction. With these performances recorded in this exercise, the techniques have shown their potential to be applied in the prediction of steel damper stiffness with optimized characteristic features to withstand structural stresses.

RESUMO

The capacity to discriminate safe from dangerous compounds has played an important role in the evolution of species, including human beings. Highly evolved senses such as taste receptors allow humans to navigate and survive in the environment through information that arrives to the brain through electrical pulses. Specifically, taste receptors provide multiple bits of information about the substances that are introduced orally. These substances could be pleasant or not according to the taste responses that they trigger. Tastes have been classified into basic (sweet, bitter, umami, sour and salty) or non-basic (astringent, chilling, cooling, heating, pungent), while some compounds are considered as multitastes, taste modifiers or tasteless. Classification-based machine learning approaches are useful tools to develop predictive mathematical relationships in such a way as to predict the taste class of new molecules based on their chemical structure. This work reviews the history of multicriteria quantitative structure-taste relationship modelling, starting from the first ligand-based (LB) classifier proposed in 1980 by Lemont B. Kier and concluding with the most recent studies published in 2022.

RESUMO

This study aims at understanding the relation among sprouting time (from 12 up to 72 h), changes in protein and starch components, and flour functionality in quinoa. Changes related to the activity of sprouting-related proteases were observed after 48 h of sprouting in all protein fractions. Progressive proteolysis resulted in relevant modification in the organization of quinoa storage proteins, with a concomitant increase in the availability of physiologically relevant metals such as copper and zinc. Changes in the protein profile upon sprouting resulted in improved foam stability, but in impaired foaming capacity. The increased levels of amylolytic enzymes upon sprouting also made starch less prompt to gelatinize upon heating. Consequently, starch re-association in a more ordered structure upon cooling was less effective, resulting in low setback viscosity. The nature and the intensity of these modifications suggest various possibilities as for using flour from sprouted quinoa as an ingredient in the formulation of baked products.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Background: Persistence of cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) and cavum vergae (CV) into adulthood and their association with mood disorders is unknown. Objective: We aimed to assess persistence of these cava in Atahualpa cohort individuals, and their association with clinical depression (as a surrogate of limbic system dysfunction). Methods: Cases were defined as Atahualpa residents aged ≥20 years with CSP and/or CV and paired 1:1 to age- and sex-matched randomly-selected controls. A board-certified psychiatrist (blinded to case-control status) interviewed individuals with the aid of the Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9) to establish a diagnosis of clinical depression. The McNemar's test and conditional logistic regression models were fitted to assess the independent association between persistence of CSP and/or CV and clinical depression (as the dependent variable). Results: Of 1,298 individuals undergoing a head CT, 51 (3.9%) had a CSP and/or CV. The selection process for the nested case-control study on the Atahualpa cohort (after excluding eight missing individuals with midline cava) generated 43 pairs. Nine of 43 case-patients (20.9%) and only two control subjects (4.7%) had moderate-to-severe scores on the PHQ-9 (cutoff ≥10 points). Clinical depression was significantly more frequent among case-patients than controls by the McNemar's test (OR: 8; 95% C.I.: 1.1 - 354.9) and the conditional logistic regression model (OR: 8; 95% C.I.: 1.00 - 63.96). Conclusions: This study provides epidemiological evidence favoring the association between midline cava and clinical depression, supporting their relationship with limbic system dysfunction.

Awareness of the several agronomic, environmental, and health benefits of quinoa has led to a constant increase in its production and consumption not only in South America, where it is a native crop, but also in Europe and the USA. However, producing wheat or gluten-free based products enriched with quinoa alters some quality characteristics, including sensory acceptance. Several anti-nutritional factors such as saponins are concentrated in the grain pericarp. These bitter and astringent substances may interfere with the digestion and absorption of various nutrients. Developing processes to decrease or modify the bitterness of quinoa can enhance palatability, and thus consumption, of quinoa. In addition to the production of sweet varieties of quinoa, other processes have been proposed. Some of them (i.e. washing, pearling and the combination of the two) have a direct effect on saponins, either by solubilization and/or the mechanical removal of seed layers. Others, such as fermentation or germination, are able to mask the bitterness with aroma compounds and/or sugar formation. This review presents the major sources of the undesirable sensory attributes of quinoa, including bitterness, and various ways of counteracting the negative characteristics of quinoa. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

A bladder diverticulum (BD) is a herniation of the bladder urothelium through the muscular bladder wall. As a result, BD presents as a thin walled bag, urine filled connected to bladder lumen through a neck or ostium. The clinical problem with bladder diverticula is their poorly empty during micturition which results in multiple lower urinary tract symptoms as well as recurrent urinary tract infections. Bladder diverticula can be grossly classified in two groups as follows: congenital or acquired with different age presentation and etiological factors in each one. Vast majority of BD occur in adults especially in men. Acquired BD, are commonly diagnosed in the setting of neurogenic dysfunction or bladder outlet obstruction, they use to be multiple, associated with trabeculated bladder and prostatic enlargement.
