RESUMO

Methacrylate monomers functionalized with pendant carbazole and oxadiazole moieties were copolymerized into random copolymers with varying carbazole/oxadiazole ratios. Specifically, the monomers of 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl 2-methylacrylate (CE) and 4-[5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]phenyl 2-methylacrylate (tBPOP) were copolymerized in various ratios, and the inherent hole drift mobilities were assessed through time-of-flight techniques. At a field strength of 345 kV/cm, the homopolymer PCE exhibited a hole mobility of 5.9 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s, which was approximately twice the value of the technologically important poly(9-vinylcarbazole), which exhibited a value of 2.8 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s. The range of hole mobilities in the copolymers varied from 2.4 x 10(-8) cm(2)/V.s for copolymers containing 50 mol % of the carbazole-containing monomer residue to 3.0 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s for copolymers that incorporated 88 mol % of the residue. Density functional theory (B3LYP/6-21G*) and optical absorption derived highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of CE were -5.39 and -1.94 eV, respectively, while the corresponding oxadiazole monomer (tBPOP) had a HOMO energy of -5.99 eV and a LUMO energy of -2.23 eV. The mean luminous efficiency of coumarin 6 doped single-layer devices constructed from the poly(CE-co-tBPOP) copolymers indicated a relatively flat efficiency of ca. 0.25 cd/A over a wide carbazole mole fraction content of 0.30-0.70.

RESUMO

Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles functionalized with a 3-4 formylphenyl benzoic acid ligand were synthesized. Excitation energy-dependent energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+ yields color tunability from the red to greenish-blue as a function of excitation wavelengths. This synthetic approach provides large shifts in the resultant chromaticity with an excitation wavelength including the generation of white light.

RESUMO

A method for monitoring DPA release from a single germinating Bacillus subtilis endospore is reported. High S/N ratio SERS spectra were obtained with excitation power 3 mW at 647.1 nm and 1 min spectral collection times. The method is proof-of-principle for the SERS detection limit at the single spore level. This represents a 100- to 1000-fold improvement over previously reported detection limits for SERS-based measurements of DPA in endospores.

RESUMO

This Minireview systematically examines optical properties of silver nanoparticles as a function of size. Extinction, scattering, and absorption cross-sections and distance dependence of the local electromagnetic field, as well as the quadrupolar coupling of 2D assemblies of such particles are experimentally measured for a wide range of particle sizes. Such measurements were possible because of the development of a novel synthetic method for the size-controlled synthesis of chemically clean, highly crystalline silver nanoparticles of narrow size distribution. The method and its unique advantages are compared to other methods for synthesis of metal nanoparticles. Synthesis and properties of nanocomposite materials using these and other nanoparticles are also described. Important highlights in the history of the field of metal nanoparticles as well as an examination of the basic principles of plasmon resonances are included.

RESUMO

Extinction, scattering, and absorption cross sections and efficiencies were experimentally measured for chemically clean silver nanoparticles in water for 16 different sizes ranging from 29 to 136 nm. The measured efficiencies indicate that particles interact with light 4-10 times stronger than the geometric cross section suggests. Absorption and scattering components of the plasmon resonance were separately measured across the visible spectral range. A method, termed standard subtraction, is suggested for the simple and reliable determination of particle concentrations independent of their size, shape, and aggregation state.
