[Bilateral exploration in unilateral inguinal hernia (cost-benefit)]. / Kétoldali feltárás egyoldali lágyéksérv esetén (cost-benefit).

The authors performed simultaneous inguinal exploration of the right side on 100 girls operated on for the left sided inguinal hernia and hernial sac was found in 73 cases on the right asymptomatic side too. Though the simultaneous bilateral exploration has been proposed by several authors in the case of unilateral inguinal hernia of infants and children, the controversy continues among the pediatric surgeons in this respect at present too. The great number of the hernial sac found on the asymptomatic side according to the authors opinion must be enough to be agreeable with the routine bilateral exploration on girls. There has not been found any publication in the Hungarian literature about this topic.

[The role of ultrasound in the indication for surgery in acute scrotum]. / Ultrahang szerepe a gyermekkori akut scrotum mütéti indikációjában.

Before the application of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute scrotum almost all cases were operated on, many unnecessarily. In the work presented here, we analyze surgical cases before and after the introduction of ultrasonography in our hospital. By the use of ultrasound, in the first year the number of operations and the number of non-justified operations were reduced to about the half and one fifth compared to corresponding data from earlier years.

[Abscessing pneumonia]. / Az abscedáló pneumoniákról.

Among the patient of a prospective study aimed to recognize the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of pneumonias, cavitating pneumonia occurred in 12.5%, typical lung abscess in 24 cases and necrotizing pneumonia in 11 cases. The illness was secondary in 4 cases. Predisposing factors were present in the majority of the patients. Assumable pathogen was detected with microbiological examinations in 24 cases. 20 patient recovered--19 by antibiotic therapy and one by surgery--were operated on the average in 7 weeks. Complication occurred in 15 patients 7 of them died. The prognosis of cavitating pneumonias is favourable, however the mortality is high in the secondary cases.

[Endocrine loading tests in familial testicular feminization]. / Endokrin terheléses vizsgálatok familiaris testicularis feminisatióban.

The case of 2 children in a family suffering from testicular feminisation of X-linked recessive inheritance, with 46 XY karyotypes, feminine constitution and external genital organs, rudimentary vaginal stump as well as the absence of uterus and tube is described. The histology of the testicles in the labium majus, hormone examinations and the results of choriogonin and testosterone loading are presented. The cases displayed total androgenic insensitiveness.

Congenital laryngotracheosophageal cleft.

Two infants with complete laryngotracheoesophageal cleft are presented. One infant had hypoplasia of the left bronchus and lung and the other had a cystic dysplastic right kidney. The literature is reviewed and a scheme for managing infants with this severe and as yet lethal anomaly is presented.
