RESUMO
Ischemic stroke is one of the neurological diseases with high mortality and disability rate, and the improvement in the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke is of great urgency. Baicalin is the main active ingredient of Scutellaria baicalensis, which could penetrate the blood-brain barrier and be used for treatment of ischemic stroke. This article reviews the research progress in the neuroprotective effects of baicalin for ischemic stroke on anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-excitotoxicity, anti-thrombin cytotoxicity, regulations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression, regulations of heat shock protein 70 expression, protection of bloodbrain barrier, promotion of neurogenesis, and the underlying mechanisms, aiming to provide scientific evidence for the clinical application of baicalin therapy for ischemic stroke.
