RESUMO

One of the major themes characterizing the emergence of modern neurosurgery has been the concept of technology transfer and the application of a broad spectrum of revolutionary elements of technology from both physical and biological science. These transference applications are now apparent in modern neurosurgery as it is practiced on all continents of the globe. More than 3 decades ago, these ideas that now have come to fruition were in states of formulation. This article describes and further documents one such fertile cauldron of ideas and practical realities--the United States Navy Nuclear Submarine Service and its role and affect on the life and professional career of an academic neurosurgeon who was active in areas of progress as modernity was established for the early 21st century.

RESUMO

This article presents an assessment of the power of ideas and their role in initiating change and progress. The enormous potential cascade effect is illustrated by examining the movement of Modernism in the arts. Next, the immense scope and capabilities of the modern scientific endeavor-with robotic space exploration at the scale of 10 meters at one extreme and the wonders of nanoscience at the scale of 10 m at the other-are examined. The attitudes and philosophies of neurological surgery are related to those involved in the Modernist movement and placed on the defined scale of contemporary scientific activity.

RESUMO

Safe and beneficial surgery of the human cerebrum is arguably one of mankind's most notable achievements and one of the great testimonials to human creativity, intelligence, and character. In many ways, it is a testimony to the climates of civilization that have marked human history. In historical terms, in the year 2007, cranial surgery celebrated its 12,000th birthday, with cranial manipulation for various religious, mystical, and therapeutic reasons being evident in Africa more than 10 millennia before the birth of Christ. This article traces the major developments and attitudes that have laid the foundations of modernity in what is currently surgery and medicine's most exciting and complex technical exercise. It is in fact a 12,000 year prelude to the modernity that we currently enjoy. Before attempting to define our modernity and emerging futurism with reinvention, examination of the prolonged and tedious invention is appropriate for perspective. The following examines and recounts the accrual of data and changes in attitude over the stream of history that have allowed refined surgery of the human cerebrum to become a reality.

RESUMO

A substantial body of literature exists surrounding the assassination and subsequent pathological examination of President John F. Kennedy. In the first part of this series, we provided a previously undocumented eyewitness account by a neurosurgeon of what transpired in Trauma Room 1 of Parkland Memorial Hospital on November 22, 1963. The current article reviews the copious literature and extensive controversy regarding President Kennedy's wounds. The autopsy report, ballistics data, official reviews of the autopsy data, and Dr. Grossman's observations are correlated in an effort to provide a neuroforensic analysis of the nature of the wounds that President Kennedy sustained. The final article of the series will relate the wounds to the timing of the shots and the location of the President as his limousine traversed Dealey Plaza and will discuss the sites from which the bullets could have been fired.

RESUMO

SUBSTANTIAL LITERATURE EXISTS on the assassination and subsequent pathological examination of President John F. Kennedy. The Warren Report, the United States Government's official report on the assassination, instead of providing definitive answers on the precise cause of President Kennedy's death, sparked intense and on-going debate. Since the publication of the Warren Report in September 1964, many issues have been woven into a wide array of theories concerning the assassination. One element continues to generate debate, namely, the exact sites of the wounds that President Kennedy sustained. A neuroforensic analysis of the wounds, from the perspective of the neurosurgeon, would establish a reasonable hypothesis for the mechanics of the shooting. Eyewitness accounts of the events surrounding the assassination represent one critical source of data for such an analysis. This report provides a previously undocumented neurosurgeon's eyewitness account of what transpired in Trauma Room 1 of Parkland Memorial Hospital on November 22, 1963.
