RESUMO

In this paper, a terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber (MTMA), incorporating surface Pythagorean tree fractal resonators, was designed and experimentally fabricated on the flexible substrate of polyethylene terephthalate. The design presented two peaks with strong absorption of more than 97% at 0.49 and 0.69 THz. The dual-band absorption peaks were seen to be shifted with the change in the refractive index of the surrounding medium, with a corresponding sensitivity of 0.0968 and 0.1182 THz/RIU. The spectral shift of the reflection resonance dip was utilized as an assessment index to evaluate the sensing performance of the new structure, and it was found to be 2.08 and 2.98 for the two resonance peaks, respectively. It was observed that the proposed structure acted as an epsilon negative material at the first resonance and as a mu negative material at the second resonance. Further investigations on the electric field, magnetic field, and surface current distributions were carried out to elaborate on the absorption characteristics at various resonance frequencies. The proposed sensor is a highly sensitive MTMA which can be used to investigate the interaction of matter with THz waves.

A new design of a triple band perfect metamaterial absorber based on Pythagorean fractal geometry is proposed and analyzed for terahertz sensing applications. The proposed design showed an enhanced sensing performance and achieved three intensive peaks at 33.93, 36.27, and 38.39 THz, corresponding to the absorptivity of 98.5%, 99.3%, and 99.6%, respectively. Due to the symmetrical nature of the recommended design, the structure exhibited the characteristics of independency on the incident wave angles. Furthermore, a parametric study was performed to show the effects of the change in substrate type, resonator material, and substrate thickness on the absorption spectrum. At a fixed analyte thickness (0.5 µm), the resonance frequency of the design was found to be sensitive to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. The proposed design presented three ultra-sensitive responses of 1730, 1590, and 2050 GHz/RIU with the figure of merit (FoM) of 3.20, 1.54, and 4.28, respectively, when the refractive index was changed from 1.0 to 1.4. Additionally, the metamaterial sensor showed a sensitivity of 1230, 2270, and 1580 GHz/µm at the three resonance frequencies, respectively, when it was utilized for the detection of thickness variation at a fixed analyte refractive index (RI) of 1.4. As long as the RI of the biomedical samples is between 1.3 and 1.4, the proposed sensor can be used for biomedical applications.

In this work, the optoelectronic parameters of natural dyes extracted from beetroot, red cabbage, walnut leaves, and henna were comprehensively investigated, namely the optical energy gap (Eg), extinction coefficient (k), refractive index (n), dielectric constant ([Formula: see text], and optical conductivity ([Formula: see text]. Results showed a high refractive index, dielectric constant and optical conductivity ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) for the dye extracted from red cabbage, while minimum values of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were obtained for the henna dye. The transition type of the optical absorption of the dyes was found to be a direct allowed transition, which is taken place between the bonding and antibonding molecular energy levels. The reported results herein are essential in revealing the viability of these natural dyes for potential applications in organic electronics, including organic photovoltaics, photodiodes, and sensors.

BACKGROUND: The design of new polymers able to filter the electromagnetic spectrum and absorb distinctly in the UV and high-energy part of visible spectrum is crucial for the development of semi-transparent solar cells. Herein, we report on the synthesis and spectroscopic, electrochemical, and photophysical characteristics of three new polymers, namely (i) Poly(triamterene-co-terephthalate), (ii) Poly[triamterene-co- 3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine-p,p'-disulfonamide], and (iii) Poly(5-hydroxyindole-2-carboxylate) that might show promise as materials for semi-transparent solar cells. RESULTS: The energy band gap, refractive index, dielectric constant, and optical conductivity of the electron donor polymer, poly(triamterene-co-terephthalate), were determined to be 2.92 eV, 1.56, 2.44 and 2.43 × 104 S cm-1, respectively. The synthesized electron acceptor polymers showed a relatively high refractive index, dielectric constant, and optical conductivity. The presence of a direct allowed transition was confirmed between intermolecular energy bands of the polymers. CONCLUSIONS: The polymers showed relatively high energy gap and deep HOMO levels, making them strong absorbers of photons in the UV region and high energy part of the visible region. The synthesized donor and acceptors performed well relative to P3HT and fullerenes due to the close match of the HOMO and LUMO levels. With further development, the polymers could be viable for use as the active layers of semi-transparent solar cells.

RESUMO

The selection and classification of genes is essential for the identification of related genes to a specific disease. Developing a user-friendly application with combined statistical rigor and machine learning functionality to help the biomedical researchers and end users is of great importance. In this work, a novel stand-alone application, which is based on graphical user interface (GUI), is developed to perform the full functionality of gene selection and classification in high dimensional datasets. The so-called HDG-select application is validated on eleven high dimensional datasets of the format CSV and GEO soft. The proposed tool uses the efficient algorithm of combined filter-GBPSO-SVM and it was made freely available to users. It was found that the proposed HDG-select outperformed other tools reported in literature and presented a competitive performance, accessibility, and functionality.

In this work, a novel sensor based on printed circuit board (PCB) microstrip rectangular patch antenna is proposed to detect different ratios of ethanol alcohol in wines and isopropyl alcohol in disinfectants. The proposed sensor was designed by finite integration technique (FIT) based high-frequency electromagnetic solver (CST) and was fabricated by Proto Mat E33 machine. To implement the numerical investigations, dielectric properties of the samples were first measured by a dielectric probe kit then uploaded into the simulation program. Results showed a linear shifting in the resonant frequency of the sensor when the dielectric constant of the samples were changed due to different concentrations of ethanol alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. A good agreement was observed between the calculated and measured results, emphasizing the usability of dielectric behavior as an input sensing agent. It was concluded that the proposed sensor is viable for multipurpose chemical sensing applications.

In this paper, a new metamaterials-based hypersensitized liquid sensor integrating omega-shaped resonator with microstrip transmission line is proposed. Microwave transmission responses to industrial energy-based liquids are investigated intensively from both numerical and experimental point of view. Simulation results concerning three-dimensional electromagnetic fields have shown that the transmission coefficient of the resonator could be monitored by the magnetic coupling between the transmission line and omega resonator. This sensor structure has been examined by methanol-water and ethanol-water mixtures. Moreover, the designed sensor is demonstrated to be very sensitive for identifying clean and waste transformer oils. A linear response characteristic of shifting the resonance frequency upon the increment of chemical contents/concentrations or changing the oil condition is observed. In addition to the high agreement of transmission coefficients (S21) between simulations and experiments, obvious resonant-frequency shift of transmission spectrum is recognized for typical pure chemical liquids (i.e., PEG 300, isopropyl alcohol, PEG1500, ammonia, and water), giving rise to identify the type and concentration of the chemical liquids. The novelty of the work is to utilize Q factor and minimum value of S21 as sensing agent in the proposed structure, which are seen to be well compatible at different frequencies ranging from 1-20 GHz. This metamaterial integrated transmission line-based sensor is considered to be promising candidate for precise detection of fluidics and for applications in the field of medicine and chemistry.

The behavior of solar cells and modules under various operational conditions can be determined effectively when their intrinsic parameters are accurately estimated and used to simulate the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. This work proposed a new computational approach based on approximation and correction technique (ACT) for simple and efficient extraction of solar cells and modules parameters from the single-diode model. In this technique, an approximated value of series resistance (Rs) was first derived and used to determine the initial value of parallel resistance (Rp). Later, the final corrected values of Rs and Rp were obtained by resubstituting their approximated values in a five-loop iteration using the manipulated equations. For rapid evaluation and validation of the proposed technique, a software application was also created using MATLAB program. The correctness and robustness of the proposed technique was validated on five types of solar cells and modules operated at varied temperatures and irradiances. The lowest RMSE value was achieved for RTC France (7.78937E-4) and PVM 752 GaAs (2.10497E-4) solar cell. The legitimacy of ACT extracted parameters was established using a simple yet competitive implementation approach wherein the performance of the developed technique was compared with several state-of-the-art methods recently reported in the literature.

RESUMO

A broadband coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed monopole antenna based on conventional CPW-fed integration with an organic solar cell (OSC) of 100% insolation is suggested for Ku band satellite communication. The proposed configuration was designed to allow for 100% insolation of the OSC, thereby improving the performance of the antenna. The device structure was fabricated using a Leiterplatten-Kopierfrasen (LPKF) prototyping Printed circuit board (PCB) machine, while a vector network analyzer was utilized to measure the return loss. The simulated results demonstrated that the proposed antenna was able to cover an interesting operating frequency band from 11.7 to 12.22 GHz, which is in compliance with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Consequently, a 3 GHz broadband in the Ku band was achieved, along with an enhancement in the realized gain of about 6.30 dB. The simulation and experimental results showed good agreement, whereby the proposed structure could be specifically useful for fixed-satellite-services (FSS) operating over the frequency range from the 11.7 to 12.22 GHz (downlink) band.

In this work, gene expression in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is analyzed with the goal of selecting the most attributed genes and performing classification. The objective was achieved by utilizing a combination of various statistical filters and a wrapper-based geometric binary particle swarm optimization-support vector machine (GBPSO-SVM) algorithm. The utilization of different filters was accentuated by incorporating a mean and median ratio criterion to remove very similar genes. The results showed that the most discriminative genes that were identified in the first and last selection steps included the presence of a repetitive gene (CAPS2), which was assigned as the gene most highly related to ASD risk. The merged gene subset that was selected by the GBPSO-SVM algorithm was able to enhance the classification accuracy.

In this research work, numerical simulations are performed to correlate the photovoltaic parameters with various internal and external factors influencing the performance of solar cells. Single-diode modeling approach is utilized for this purpose and theoretical investigations are compared with the reported experimental evidences for organic and inorganic solar cells at various electrical and thermal conditions. Electrical parameters include parasitic resistances (Rs and Rp) and ideality factor (n), while thermal parameters can be defined by the cells temperature (T). A comprehensive analysis concerning broad spectral variations in the short circuit current (Isc), open circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF) and efficiency (η) is presented and discussed. It was generally concluded that there exists a good agreement between the simulated results and experimental findings. Nevertheless, the controversial consequence of temperature impact on the performance of organic solar cells necessitates the development of a complementary model which is capable of well simulating the temperature impact on these devices performance.

In this work the optical response, spectroscopic behaviour, and optoelectronic properties of solution and solid state composite systems based on α,ω-dihexylsexithiophene/tris(8-hydroxyquinolinate) gallium (DH6T/Gaq3) are studied upon the incorporation of different molar percentages of Gaq3. UV-vis, PL, FTIR spectrophotometers and SEM technique were utilized to perform the investigations. The results showed a reduced energy band (Eg) (from 2.33eV to 1.83eV) and a broadened absorption spectrum for the blend system when 29.8% molar of Gaq3 was incorporated. These were attributed to the enhanced intermolecular interactions that are brought about by the increased strength of π-π overlap between the molecular moieties. A mathematical formula was developed to interpret the non-monotonic change occurred in Eg, while numerical calculations have been made to assign the type and nature of the electronic transitions governing the spectroscopic behaviour of the system. The results were elaborated and comprehensively discussed in terms of the exciton generation, energy band theory, molecular interactions, and spatial geometry.

Head movement is common during CT brain perfusion (CTP) acquisition of patients with acute ischemic stroke. The effects of this movement on the accuracy of CTP analysis has not been studied previously. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of head movement on CTP analysis summary maps using simulated phantom data. A dynamic digital CTP phantom dataset of 25 time frames with a simulated infarct volume was generated. Head movement was simulated by specific translations and rotations of the phantom data. Summary maps from this transformed phantom data were compared to the original data using the volumetric dice similarity coefficient (DSC). DSC for both penumbra and core strongly decreased for rotation angles larger than approximately 1°, 2°, and 7° for, respectively, pitch, roll, and yaw. The accuracy is also sensitive for small translations in the z-direction only. Sudden movements introduced larger errors than gradual movement. These results indicate that CTP summary maps are sensitive to head movement, even for small rotations and translations. CTP scans with head movement larger than the presented values should be interpreted with extra care.

OBJECTIVE: Computed Tomography Perfusion (CTP) is a promising tool to support treatment decision for acute ischemic stroke patients. However, head movement during acquisition may limit its applicability. Information of the extent of head motion is currently lacking. Our purpose is to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the extent of head movement during acquisition. METHODS: From 103 consecutive patients admitted with suspicion of acute ischemic stroke, head movement in 220 CTP datasets was qualitatively categorized by experts as none, minimal, moderate, or severe. The movement was quantified using 3D registration of CTP volume data with non-contrast CT of the same patient; yielding 6 movement parameters for each time frame. The movement categorization was correlated with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and baseline characteristic using multinomial logistic regression and student's t-test respectively. RESULTS: Moderate and severe head movement occurred in almost 25% (25/103) of all patients with acute ischemic stroke. The registration technique quantified head movement with mean rotation angle up to 3.6° and 14°, and mean translation up to 9.1mm and 22.6mm for datasets classified as moderate and severe respectively. The rotation was predominantly in the axial plane (yaw) and the main translation was in the scan direction. There was no statistically significant association between movement classification and NIHSS score and baseline characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate or severe head movement during CTP acquisition of acute stroke patients is quite common. The presented registration technique can be used to automatically quantify the movement during acquisition, which can assist identification of CTP datasets with excessive head movement.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although CT perfusion is a promising tool to support treatment decisions for patients with acute ischemic stroke, it still lacks a standardized method for CTP analysis. The purpose of this study was to assess the variability of the area of infarct core and penumbra as presented in summary maps produced by 2 different software packages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one CTP image datasets of 26 consecutive patients who presented with acute ischemic stroke were retrospectively evaluated. Identical image datasets were analyzed by using 2 different commercially available CTP analysis software packages, each representing a mainstream of widely used algorithms: delay-sensitive and delay-insensitive. Bland-Altman analyses were performed to evaluate the level of agreement between the 2 methods in determining the area of infarct core and penumbra area in the summary maps. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference in infarct core area (-23.6 ± 25.6 cm(2)) and penumbra area (15.8 ± 25.3 cm(2)) between the 2 software packages. For all the areas presented in the summary maps, the Bland-Altman interval limit of agreement was larger than 100 cm(2). CONCLUSIONS: The infarct core and penumbra area of CTP summary maps generated by 2 commonly used software packages were significantly different, emphasizing the need for standardization and validation of CTP analysis before it can be applied to patient management in clinical practice.

The Kennedy Class I removable partial denture (RPD) can cause stress to supporting hard and soft tissues and may lead to harmful effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the pattern of these stresses in three different positions before and following a relining procedure. Ten patients, five males and five females, with a lower distal extension RPD and an opposing upper class III type RPD were selected for this study. Strain gauges together with a strain gauge indicator were used to study the pattern of stresses in three selected positions. Some changes were significantly different at the site of the denture base and at the metal frame near the direct retainer. After relining, the stresses were shared partially by the abutments and partially by the tissues. Maximum stresses were reported during swallowing. No significant difference was noticed between males and females.

The swing-lock removable partial denture (RPD) can address some specific partially edentulous situations better than conventional partial denture designs. The concept is recommended for maximizing stability and retention by access to more tooth surfaces and undercuts with the unique clasping mechanism offered by the incorporation of lock, hinge, and gate assemblies. Since its introduction, the swing-lock RPD has gained some degree of acceptance. However, it is infrequently used by clinicians because it is technique-sensitive, especially during hinge and lock fabrication, and the durability of the retentive element of the locking mechanism decreases with the progressive wear of the metal latch attachment. This article presents a new design for a swing-lock RPD by use of a vertical bar and plastic clip attachment as an alternative to the hinge and latch attachment. The suggested modification in the locking mechanism may overcome some of the problems associated with the conventional swing-lock RPD.

RESUMO

We present an infant with true trisomy 22. Mosaicism is ruled out by the finding of a 47,XX, +22 karyotype in all cells analysed originating from two embryonic germ layers. The physical findings are consistent with the previously noted features including developmental delay, ear abnormalities, micrognathia, clefting, and congenital heart disease. The patient is the first described with macrocephaly and hydrocephalus and the second with holoprosencephaly.

Included in this study are 21 edentulous patients. They were classified according to their period of edentulousness into two groups. One group was edentulous from 1/2 to 2 years. The other group was edentulous for more than 2 years. The neutral zone (NZ) was located for each patient by using record bases, and an impression compound as the occlusion rim. A 30-gauge stainless steel wire was adapted along the center of the alveolar ridge on the final cast. A 24-gauge stainless steel wire was adapted and stabilized over the center of each occlusion rim. An occlusal view radiograph was obtained of each recording base and its cast. Each film was placed in a viewing box and the relationship between the images of the two wires in the buccolingual direction was studied in the anterior, premolar, and molar regions on the left and right sides. Where the two images coincided a zero score was given. In the case of buccal location a plus scores was given, and where there was a lingual location of the (NZ), a minus score was given. All measures were taken in millimeters. Statistical analysis was performed between the two groups. The longer the period of edentulousness, the more buccally/lingually located was the NZ.
