BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Rape is a severe kind of sexual violence that represents a significant violation of human rights. The objective was to investigate the demographic and clinical features of female survivors of sexual assault in Lahore, Pakistan. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine of Lahore General Hospital, analysing records of female sexual assault survivors investigated by affiliated police stations from November 2020 to November 2022. Data were collected from medicolegal certificates and medical notes and analysed using SPSS software. RESULT: 282 female survivors reported to Lahore General Hospital's Forensic Medicine Department, aged 5-55 years, with a mean age of 22.74 ± 8.30. A significant proportion (50.4%) were aged 16-25 years. Most survivors were examined between 6 and 24 h (34%) and 2-7 days (37.9%) after the assault, with the majority (95%) exhibiting well-developed secondary sexual characteristics. Sexual assault and physical abuse were both reported in 56.4% of cases. In 77% of cases, the perpetrator was known, and in 36.5% of cases, a weapon was used. No external body injury was observed in 74.8% of cases, and 2.8% showed signs of fresh hymen rupture. The study identified 92.2% of cases lost to follow-up. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the pressing need to implement effective measures to prevent and address rape in Pakistan. The findings emphasise the need for education, improved forensic infrastructure and policy reforms to address sexual assault effectively.

The Vitis vinifera (VV) and Zingiber zerumbet (ZZ) are popular functional foods which are used for the treatment of cardiovascular ailments. These possess antiproliferative, antiplatelet and antioxidant effects. The current study has been designed to ascertain their effectiveness against Isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction (MI). Chronic administration of VV and ZZ was accessed for its cardio-protective effect in ISO-induced MI rats. Male albino rats were treated with VV (250 mg/kg, p.o.), ZZ (200 mg/kg, p.o.) and its combination (Vitis vinifera + Zingiber zerumbet) VZ for 30 days prior to ISO administration (85 mg/kg, S/C). Electrocardiography (ECG) and Blood Pressure (BP) were measured using PowerLab data acquisition system. Biochemical serum markers, tissue histopathology and HPLC finger printing were performed. The VV, ZZ and its combination VZ showed significant protective effects on ST segment elevation, cardiac biomarkers; Troponin I (Trop I), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), enhanced the cardiac antioxidant defense system, restored the hematological (WBCs, RBCs, Platelets) & coagulation parameters and improved the lipid profile and histopathological alterations such as tissue necrosis, infiltration and edema which were observed only in ISO administered rats. These results indicate that V. vinifera and Z. zerumbet possess cardio protective effects possibly mediated through maintenance of endogenous antioxidant levels, cardiac biomarkers and lipid parameters.

PURPOSE: This is the first comparative report that demonstrates the comparison of the anti-hyperglycemic activity of camel milk, buffalo milk and synthetic drugs in induced diabetic rabbits. METHOD: Five groups (n = 8) of rabbits containing placebo (G1) and hyperglycemic groups (Alloxan® administered intravenously) including control diabetic (G2), camel milk treated @40 ml/kg (G3), buffalo milk treated @40 ml/kg (G4) and glibenclamide (Glicon®) @10 mg/kg (G5) orally for 60 days. Collection of blood was done for hematology and biochemical analysis. Renal and hepatic tissue sections were processed by routine paraffin technique for diabetes-induced histopathological changes and anti-diabetic activity of camel and buffalo milk. RESULTS: Diabetes deleteriously (P ≤ 0.05) affects all studied parameters. A significant (P ≤ 0.05) recovery was seen in diabetogenic hematological (RBC, MCV, Hb, MCH) and serological parameters (AST, ALT, creatinine, BUN, TPs, and TOS) with camel milk treatment. Camel milk and glibenclamide decreased blood glucose level more significantly (P < 0.01) than the buffalo milk but more significant renal recovery was seen by renal function. Microscopic observations demonstrated that camel milk and glibenclamide recovered the altered histology of the liver and kidneys towards normal. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that camel milk has a potential therapeutic effect in the treatment of hyperglycemia and plays a significant role in its management as well as reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications as compared to buffalo milk.
