The vibrational and thermodynamic properties of energetic materials (EMs) are critical to understand their structure responses at finite temperature. In this work, the zero-point energy and temperature effects are incorporated into dispersion-corrected density functional theory to improve the calculated accuracy for vibrational responses and thermodynamic behaviors of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazole-5-one (NTO). Based on temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy, the emergence and disappearance of new peaks as well as discontinuous Raman shifts indicate the distinct changes of molecular configuration and intermolecular interactions within the temperature of 250-350 K. From Hirshfeld surface and structure analysis, the subtle changes of intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) related with the shrinkage of thermal expansion coefficient, are treated as an essential step of a potential structural transformation of NTO. Moreover, the calculated heat capacity, entropy and bulk moduli could reflect the softening behavior of NTO and further enrich the thermodynamic data set of EMs. These results demonstrate the evolution of NTO molecules controlled by non-covalent interactions and provide vital insights into the thermodynamic behaviors at finite temperature.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a heart failure syndrome, and is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetes. DCM is mainly characterized by ventricular dilation, myocardial hypertrophy, myocardial fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction. Clinical studies have found that insulin resistance is an independent risk factor for DCM. However, its specific mechanism of DCM remains unclear. 8-hydroxyguanine DNA glycosylase 1(OGG1)is involved in DNA base repair and the regulation of inflammatory genes. In this study, we show that OGG1 was associated with the occurrence of DCM. for the first time. The expression of OGG1 was increased in the heart tissue of DCM mice, and OGG1 deficiency aggravated the cardiac dysfunction of DCM mice. Metabolomics show that OGG1 deficiency resulted in obstruction of glycolytic pathway. At the molecular level, OGG1 regulated glucose uptake and insulin resistance by interacting with PPAR-γ in vitro. In order to explore the protective effect of exogenous OGG1 on DCM, OGG1 adeno-associated virus was injected into DCM mice through tail vein in the middle stage of the disease. We found that the overexpression of OGG1 could improve cardiac dysfunction of DCM mice, indicating that OGG1 had a certain therapeutic effect on DCM. These results demonstrate that OGG1 is a new molecular target for the treatment of DCM and has certain clinical significance.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. Early studies hold an opinion that gut microbiota is environmentally acquired and associated with RA susceptibility. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates that genetics also shape the gut microbiota. It is known that some strains of inbred laboratory mice are highly susceptible to collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), while the others are resistant to CIA. Here, we show that transplantation of fecal microbiota of CIA-resistant C57BL/6J mice to CIA-susceptible DBA/1J mice confer CIA resistance in DBA/1J mice. C57BL/6J mice and healthy human individuals have enriched B. fragilis than DBA/1J mice and RA patients. Transplantation of B. fragilis prevents CIA in DBA/1J mice. We identify that B. fragilis mainly produces propionate and C57BL/6J mice and healthy human individuals have higher level of propionate. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) in RA are activated to undergo tumor-like transformation. Propionate disrupts HDAC3-FOXK1 interaction to increase acetylation of FOXK1, resulting in reduced FOXK1 stability, blocked interferon signaling and deactivation of RA-FLSs. We treat CIA mice with propionate and show that propionate attenuates CIA. Moreover, a combination of propionate with anti-TNF etanercept synergistically relieves CIA. These results suggest that B. fragilis or propionate could be an alternative or complementary approach to the current therapies.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practicum is crucial for strengthening nursing students' clinical competence. However, nursing students often experience considerable stress during clinical practicum, and so they employ coping strategies to alleviate it. There is almost no empirical evidence on the change trajectory of perceived stress, coping strategies, and clinical competence among nursing students during a one-year clinical practicum. This study aimed to investigate the trajectory of change in perceived stress, coping strategies, and clinical competence among undergraduate nursing students during a one-year clinical practicum. METHODS: This study used a longitudinal cohort design. Undergraduate nursing students were recruited from a science and technology university in Taiwan to participate from February 2021 to January 2022. Perceived stress, coping strategies, and clinical competence among students in basic training practicum (T1), advanced training practicum (T2), and comprehensive clinical nursing practicum (T3) were surveyed by using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Coping Behaviour Inventory (CBI), and Clinical Competence Scale (CCS). PSS, CBI, and CCS in T1, T2, and T3 were compared using a generalized estimating equation (GEE) to deal with correlated data. The level of statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 315 undergraduate nursing students completed the questionnaire. The study results show that the overall perceived stress of the students is the highest in T2 and the lowest in T3. The main source of stress of the students is 'taking care of patients' at T1 and 'lack of professional knowledge and skills' at T2 and T3. Students' perceived stress in 'taking care of patients' gradually decreases over time. The four coping strategies of CBI, which are 'stay optimistic', 'problem-solving', 'transference' and 'avoidance' in this order, remain the same ranking in three surveys.The main stress coping strategy used by students is 'stay optimistic', while the coping strategy 'avoidance' is used more frequently in T2 than in T1 and T3. Students' mean scores of the overall clinical competence and in the 'general nursing' and 'management' subscales in T3 are higher than those in T1 and T2. However, their mean scores in 'self-growth' and 'positivity' subscales are the highest in T1 and the lowest in T2. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that through experiential learning in clinical practicum at different stages time after time, students' overall perceived stress is the lowest and their overall clinical competence is the highest in T3. The main coping strategy used when students managed stress is 'stay optimistic'. According to the results, we suggest that clinical educators provide students with appropriate guidance strategies at different stages of stress and continue to follow up the clinical competence and retention rates of these nursing students in the workplace in the future.

Rotor speed and position detection are integral parts of the closed-loop control system for multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) ultrasonic motors. The non-contact speed detection method is important for the high-precision control of the spherical rotor. This paper proposes a closed-loop control method based on an optical flow sensor for the velocity-position control of a multi-DOF clamping-type ultrasonic motor. The optical flow information is analyzed using the conical L-K optical flow algorithm to obtain the rotor speed and position. An incremental PID control method is used to perform dual closed-loop positioning control of the motor regarding speed and position. An experimental platform for the optical flow sensor is designed, and the method's feasibility is verified experimentally.

The successful synthesis of quasi-freestanding bilayer borophene has aroused much attention for its superior physical properties and holds great promise for future electronic devices. Herein, we comprehensively explore six boron sheets beyond the monolayer and structurally characterize them via various methods using first-principles calculations for experimental references. On the basis of atomic models of borophenes, simulated scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images show different morphologies at different bias voltages and are explained by the partial densities of states and the height differences in the vertical direction. Simulated transmission electron microscope images further probe the internal atomic arrangement of boron sheets and compensate for the shortcomings of STM images to better distinguish different phases of boron sheets. The interlayer coupling strength is stronger in bilayer borophenes than in the three-layer system via the electron localization function and Mulliken bond population. In addition, simulated X-ray diffraction and infrared spectra show different characteristic peaks and corresponding vibrational modes to further characterize these boron sheets. These theoretical results can decrease the prime cost and provide vital guidance for the experimental synthesis and identification of boron sheets beyond the monolayer.

Alterations in the composition or function of the gut microbiota are associated with the etiology of human diseases. Drug-microbiota interactions can affect drug bioavailability, effectiveness, and toxicity through various routes. For instance, the direct effect of microbial enzymes on drugs can either boost or diminish their efficacy. Thus, considering its wide range of metabolic capabilities, the gut microbiota is a promising target for pharmacological modulation. Furthermore, drugs can alter the microbiota and the mechanisms by which they interact with their host. Individual variances in microbial profiles can also contribute to the different host responses to various drugs. However, the influence of interactions between the gut microbiota and drugs on treatment efficacy remains poorly elucidated. In this review, we will discuss the impact of microbiota dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and we will attempt to elucidate the crosstalk between the gut microbiota and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), with an emphasis on how drug-microbiota interactions affect the treatment efficacy in RA. We speculate that improved knowledge of these critical interactions will facilitate the development of novel therapeutic options that use microbial markers for predicting or optimizing treatment outcomes.

3-Nitro-1,2,4-trihydroxy-5-one (NTO), a highly potential high-performance explosive with good thermal stability and low sensitivity, has attracted much attention for its physicochemical properties in recent years. In this work, the pressure effect of the vibrational and electronic properties is investigated to understand the intermolecular interaction of NTO under hydrostatic compression. From the pressure-dependent Raman and infrared spectra, we found that the red-shifts of high-wavenumber N-H stretching modes and the discontinuous shifts of all Raman modes occur at 3 and 6 GPa, indicating an evident change of molecular configuration and intermolecular interaction upon compression. Based on structural analysis, the changes of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) are closely relevant to the anomalous rotation of the nitro group and the lengthening of N-H bonds, which can be treated as an important step of a potential structural transformation of NTO. Moreover, intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction leads to the shrinkage of the band gap at 6 GPa, caused by the fast charge transfer of 0.07 e from the nitrogen heterocycle to the nitro group. These results manifest a non-covalent interaction mechanism for modulating the molecular configuration of EMs under pressure loading and provide vital insights into understanding the pressure effects for energetic molecular crystals.

RESUMO

Ferroptosis, a novel type of regulated cell death mediated by iron-dependent lipid oxidation, was discovered a decade ago. Significant progress has been made in our knowledge of ferroptosis and immune dysfunction. This review covers recent advancements in the interaction of ferroptosis and the immune system, with an emphasis on autoimmune diseases. The critical regulators of ferroptosis are summarized in the context of reactive oxygen species biology, lipid metabolism, and iron homeostasis. The molecular crosstalk between ferroptosis and different immune cells is also highlighted. Future research is expected to yield new insights into the mechanisms governing ferroptosis and its potential therapeutic benefits in autoimmune diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Symptoms and treatment of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) adversely impact patients' quality of life (QoL). There is no QoL tool that considers the linguistic and cultural specificities of patients with VLU in Taiwan. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the traditional Chinese version of the Venous Leg Ulcer Quality of Life Questionnaire (VLU-QoL). METHODS: The processes of translation and cultural adaptation of the VLU-QoL from English to traditional Chinese included forward translation, back translation, linguistic modification, and expert review. Using a sample of 167 patients with VLU from a hospital in southern Taiwan, the psychometric properties analyzed were internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, convergent validity, and criterion-related. RESULTS: The traditional Chinese version of the VLU-QoL demonstrated good overall internal consistency (Cronbach α = .95) and overall test-retest reliability coefficient (r = 0.98). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the convergent validity of the scale; results showed that the Activity, Psychology, and Symptom Distress constructs had acceptable fit and a structure similar to that of the original scale. The scale had its criterion-related validity verified using the Taiwanese version of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey, demonstrating a good correlation coefficient r that ranged from -0.7 to -0.2 (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese version of the VLU-QoL is valid and reliable for assessing the QoL in patients with VLU, delivering a tool that nurses can use to deliver timely and appropriate care to improve patients' QoL.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a representative persistent organic pollutant and its disposal by mechanochemical (MC) technology emerges in recent years. However, degradation mechanism of PFOA especially rupture of C-F bonds during MC process is still unclear. Therefore, we innovatively employed barium titanate as co-milling reagent in MC system to disclose an electron-dominated reduction process. By stimulating piezoelectric effect of BaTiO3 under MC impact, free electrons were generated. The results implied more than 95.00% degradation and 60.00% defluorination efficiency were obtained after 6 h' ball milling. DPPH• was used as probe to confirm the existence of piezo-excited electrons, which were further verified to be major reactive species by atmosphere experiments. Thus, PFOA destruction was dominated by reduction process, characterizing by breakage of C-F bonds induced by electrons. Accordingly, the fate of organic fluorides was explored and BaF2 was identified as final product. The cleavage of carboxyl group initiated PFOA decomposition, following by successive removal of CF2 groups and elimination of F-. Moreover, the practical experiments and reusable trials implied promising application of this method. Overall, this paper provides a novel perspective for reductive decomposition of PFOA by MC technology and reveals the major role of electrons during reaction process.

RESUMO

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis (MRH) is a rare disease with poorly defined therapeutic strategies. Here, we report the case of a patient with eosinophilic gastroenteritis who developed MRH after 5 years. The patient presented with disabling and rapidly progressive polyarthralgia, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, and resistance to first-line therapies. However, there was a marked improvement in the arthritis symptoms following treatment with tofacitinib. This presentation provides a useful perspective for the therapeutic management of complex scenarios involving MRH.

Cardiomyocyte apoptosis caused by fat metabolism disorder plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) has multiple functions, including regulating redox and DNA repair. However, the role of APE1 in the pathogenesis of DCM remains unclear. To investigate the mechanism of APE1 on high-fat induced apoptosis in H9C2 cells, we treated H9C2 cells with palmitic acid (PA) as an apoptosis model caused by hyperlipidemia. We found that PA reduced the viability and increased apoptosis of H9C2 cells by inducing up-regulation of APE1 protein and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. APE1 knockdown enhanced PA-induced apoptosis, and ER stress and overexpression of APE1 demonstrated the opposite effect. Furthermore, APE1 regulated PA-induced apoptosis via ER stress. The APE1 mutant (C65A, lack of redox regulation) loses its protective effect against ER stress and apoptosis. These findings indicate that APE1 protects PA-induced H9C2 cardiomyocyte apoptosis through ER stress via its redox-regulated function. This study provided new insights into the therapy for DCM.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), typical two-dimensional semiconductors, have been extensively studied for their extraordinary physical properties and utilized for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. However, the finite samples and discontinuity in the synthesis process of TMD materials definitely induce defect edges in nanoribbons and greatly influence the device performance. Here, we systematically studied the atomic structures, energetic and mechanical stability, and electronic and catalytic properties of MoSe2 nanoribbons on the basis of experiments. Clear benefits of ZZSe-Mo-NW30 edged nanoribbons were found to evidently increase the dynamic stability according to our first-principles calculations. Meanwhile, unsaturated Mo atoms at the edge sites induced local magnetic moments up to 0.54 µB and changed the chemical environments of adjacent Se atoms, which acted as active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a lower onset potential of -0.04 eV. The external tensile strain on these nanoribbons can have negligible effects on the electronic and catalytic properties. The onset potential of the ZZSe-Mo-NW30 edged nanoribbons only changed 0.03 eV under critical tensile strain. The atomic-scale research of edge reconstructions in TMD materials provides new opportunities to modulate the synthesis mechanism for experiments and defect-engineering applications in electrochemical catalysts.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis-induced apoptosis leads to lymphopenia including the decrease of CD4+ T cells thus favoring immunosuppression. OBJECTIVES: Although epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors significantly improve the survival rate of septic mice, the effect of EGFR on the function and metabolism of CD4+ T cells in sepsis remained unknown. METHODS: CD4+ T cells from septic mice and patients were assessed for apoptosis, activation, Warburg metabolism and glucose transporter 1 (Glut1) expression with or without the interference of EGFR activation. RESULTS: EGFR facilitates CD4+ T cell activation and apoptosis through Glut1, which is a key enzyme that controls glycolysis in T cells. EGFR, TANK binding kinase 1 (TBK1) and Glut1 form a complex to facilitate Glut1 transportation from cytoplasm to cell surface. Both the levels of membrane expression of EGFR and Glut1 and the activation levels of CD4+ T cells were significantly higher in patients with sepsis as compared with healthy subjects. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrated that through its downstream TBK1/Exo84/RalA protein system, EGFR regulates Glut1 transporting to the cell surface, which is a key step for inducing the Warburg effect and the subsequent cellular activation and apoptosis of CD4+ T lymphocytes and may eventually affect the immune functional status, causing immune cell exhaustion in sepsis.

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was designed. METHODS: A convenience sample of 659 participants was recruited. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate the factorial structure. In addition, the concurrent validity was assessed using the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. RESULTS: The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the scale was a 6-factor structure, named love of learning, active learning, effective learning, independent learning, learning motivation and creative learning, which explained 53.30% of the total variance. The findings of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that a 37-item six first-order model produced the best-fit statistics. Internal consistency for the scale was satisfactory, ranging from 0.71 to 0.88. Concurrent and predictive validities also reached significant levels. The utility of the instrument was suggested.

BACKGROUND: An association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and autoimmune liver diseases (AILDs) was found in observational studies. However, neither the direction nor the cause-effect chain was clear. This study aimed to assess the causal associations between AILDs and RA. METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Following a strict assessment, genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets were used to select potential candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) was used as the primary analysis approach, supplemented with four sensitive analysis methods applied to assess the robustness of the results. RESULTS: We discovered that a genetically increased primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) risk had a positive causal effect on RA (IVW OR=1.149, 95% CI=1.063-1.241, P<0.001). According to the MR-Egger regression, horizontal pleiotropy was unlikely to impact causality (intercept = -0.028, P = 0.263). Using the leave-one-out strategy, sensitivity studies revealed that the MR analysis results were robust and reliable. Genetically determined primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) was not linked with the risk of RA (IVW OR=1.071, 95%CI=0.984-1.166, P = 0.111). The results of the MR analysis were further validated by sensitivity analyses utilizing the leave-one-out approach. In the other direction, there was no causal relationship between RA and PBC (OR=1.132, 95% CI=0.881-1.454, P = 0.333) or PSC (OR=1.067, 95% CI=0.891-1.279, P = 0.088). CONCLUSIONS: Using a two-sample MR analysis, we investigated the relationship between AILDs and RA and revealed first that PBC increases the risk of RA. Large-scale cross-disease GWAS are required to further illuminate the genomic landscape of AILDs and RA.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of decision support intervention on treatment knowledge, decision self-efficacy, decisional conflict, and decision satisfaction in patients with hepatocellular cancer. The study was a randomized controlled trial. In all, 69 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were recruited and randomly assigned to a decision support group or a control group. Data were collected at baseline, post-test, and follow-up using self-report questionnaires. After controlling for baseline scores, the between-group difference (95% confidence interval [CI]) for treatment-related knowledge in post-test scores was 11.9 (6.1, 17.8). After controlling for baseline scores, the between-group difference (95% CI) for decisional conflict was -7.0 (-12.0, -2.0). There was no statistically significant between-group difference in decision self-efficacy and decision satisfaction. Findings supported the efficacy of decision support intervention to improve treatment knowledge and reduce decisional conflict but had no significant effect on decision self-efficacy and decision satisfaction in patients with HCC.

Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) is a typical energetic molecular crystal with excellent detonation performance and good thermal stability, has been widely used in military and civilian purposes. In this work, the vibrational properties of HMX combined with structure and electronic properties are studied to understand its pressure response against uniaxial compressions. The calculated eigenvalues of stress tensors show significant anisotropy of intermolecular interactions. Especially, the direction of shear stressτxyandτxzin [100] compression have an abrupt change nearV/V0= 0.84. Further, Raman spectra under each uniaxial compression are simulated to inspect the molecular configuration of HMX. Compared to the blue shifts of [010] and [001] orientations, the discontinuous Raman shifts of atV/V0= 0.86-0.84 in [100] orientation suggest that HMX would undergoes a possible structural transformation at the pressure of 6.82-9.15 GPa. Structural analysis implies that the subtle rotation of NO2group is changed by intermolecular interactions of HMX. Moreover, the abnormal evolution of band gap is observed atV/V0= 0.84 in [100] orientation, which is associated with the structure modification of HMX. Overall, the compression behaviors of HMX under uniaxial compressions would provide a useful insight for the actual shock compression conditions.

Heteroatom substitution of gold nanoclusters enables precise tuning of their physicochemical properties at the single-atom level, which has a significant impact on the applications related to excited states including photovoltaics, photocatalysis and photo-luminescence. To this end, understanding the effect of metal exchange on the structures, electronic properties and photoexcited dynamic behavior of nanoclusters is imperative. Combining density functional theory with time-domain nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, herein we explored the effect of metal replacement on the electronic and vibrational properties as well as excited-state dynamics of ligand-protected MAu24(SR)18 (M = Pd, Pt, Cd, and Hg) nanoclusters. At the atomistic level, we elucidate hot carrier relaxation and recombination dynamic behavior with various doping atoms. Such distinct excited-state behavior of MAu24(SR)18 nanoclusters is attributed to different energy gaps and electron-phonon coupling between the donor and acceptor energy levels, owing to the perturbation of nanoclusters by a single foreign atom. The specific phonon modes involved in excited-state dynamics have been identified, which are associated with the MAu12 core and ligand rings. This time-dependent excited-state dynamic study fills the gap between structure/composition and excited-state dynamic behavior of MAu24(SR)18 nanoclusters, which would stimulate the exploration of their applications in photoenergy storage and conversion.
